Good reason not to leak crap or announce things that haven't occurred. Was USF at daily here? Maybe not. May have signed a term sheet with SM, subject to background checks. If that's the case & leak came from outside of USF, place no blame on them.

Media gets things wrong everyday. Horribly wrong.

It'll be interesting how the terms shake out in a few months when Buzz actually signs a contract with VT. Almost always such a rush to announce the hire or "extension."

USF though.. no announcement. Smart. Don't blame them unless they put the info out there.

Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

After the week we have had around here, can you imagine if MU had hired him and that came out?!?!   That would have been an epic few days of posting.

I've been having fun all morning thinking of Masiello walking into his office this morning.  "Hey, guys. Um, yeah..."

He also had the issue with the Kentucky Derby tickets a few years ago for about $70K, though I can't imagine USF wasn't aware of that one because it was in the news.

Didn't USF hire George O'Leary, who got fired as the Head Coach of Notre Dame's Football team for the same reason?

This happened at Yale 3 years ago.  The head football coach got fired after coaching like 2 seasons when it was revealled he lied on his resume to get the job 2 years prior.

That's UCF. And Leary has been very good for them.

if you don't need a degree to be Governor of Wisconsin, you certainly shouldn't need one to coach USF's basketball team

Does anyone know whether a degree is required to be a D-1 coach, or is it up to the discretion of the university?  Does this complicate his job at Manhattan?

Discretion of the University I believe.

The issue may be less about what the requirement is (although, if they have that requirement, that certainly would still be an issue) and more about the fact that he falsified his resume.  I'm sure that Manhattan is going back to look at the resume he submitted to them to get the job.  If you lie on your resume, what else are you willing to lie about?

Manhattan "puts him on leave"?  http://espn.go.com/new-york/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10678756/manhattan-places-coach-steve-masiello-leave-degree-status-reviewed

I thought he resigned to take the USF offer?  So he gets the offer rescinded by USF and he's suddenly just "on leave" from Manhattan?

What type of PR would it bring to accept him back with open arms?  Seems like it would be a bad move a multiple levels.  They first have to cleanup their lack of a background check mess!

edit: I see what you meant now.  Yes, crazy they'd even consider keeping him around

Apparently USF didn't respect the process.

Hey, wait, did anyone ever check out Brent's resume?

He's ok, I just checked.  From his C.V.

The Clown State University (Ft. Worth, TX)
Brent "Buzz-O" Williams
Bachelor of Pantomime, magna cum lah-dee-dah-dee, 1996
Double-major in ventriloquism and silliness studies
Minor in juggling
Senior thesis: "Essay on the Post-Modern Interpretation of Clowning Theory of Baroque Iberia"

Actually, they have his senior thesis on display at that little museum in the basement of the Grand Avenue Mall.  Not many people know this, but while he was here they would commemorate it every year on his birthday.

I gotta tell ya, if this doesn't prove hindsight is 20/20, I don't know what does.  I mean, how did we not see it?  The juggling of multiple offers, talking out of both sides of his mouth, his "eccentric" behavior, etc.

He is a clown.  And he clowned us.
