MU Offers Shooting Guard Stanford Robinson
« on: December 12, 2011, 10:11:13 AM »
Marquette is now added to an extensive list of schools that have offered the star player a scholarship. Rivals hasn't yet been updated to include MU, but the offer is confirmed in the Paul VI basketball report below.

Why choose MU? No place better if you want to model your game after Dwyane Wade.

PVI picks up two Ws at NIKE National Hoops Festival

Two games, two more wins for the Paul VI boys' basketball team.  Playing in a loaded field at the NIKE National Hoops Festival (a showcase event pitting area squads against national and regional powers), PVI (5-0, 0-0 WCAC) managed to piece together strong enough efforts to get the job done against two very different opponents.

First, on Saturday afternoon, the Panthers matched up with West Charlotte (NC), a team that had drawn preseason top 40 in the country rankings in a number of publications.  Executing their gameplan to perfection, PVI stifled West Charlotte big man Kennedy Meeks (Top 15 prospect in the Class of 2013), holding the 6'8 260 lb Meeks to just five total points in the contest.  The senior backcourt for Paul VI was the difference, as George Mason signee Patrick Holloway and Navy signee Tilman Dunbar combined for 35 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals.  PVI won the game by a final tally of 65-56, with Dunbar receiving the MVP award from the event organizer.

Less than twenty-four hours later, PVI had to turn around and face local top ten program Episcopal in an afternoon contest.  In a thrilling game, Episcopal had a ten point lead at the half and a fourteen point advantage with just under three minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter.  However, PVI would end the game on 34-12 run behind a strong defensive effort and a balanced contribution from the junior class along with senior forward Coleman Johnson (Fairfield signee).  Junior guard Stanford Robinson scored 16 points to go along with 7 assists and 7 rebounds, while junior forwards Tim Higgins (Cornell commit) and Jamall Robinson each added 11 points.  The aforementioned Johnson had 16 points and 9 boards in the game as PVI claimed victory, 67-59.  Stanford Robinson was presented with the game MVP by the event organizer.  In the locker room following the game, however, Robinson turned around and gave the award to Tim Higgins for his contributions to keep PVI in the game and his team-first performance.

Looking ahead...

The schedule marches on as PVI now turns toward league play for a pair of games in the toughest conference in America - the WCAC.  On Tuesday, the Panthers travel to Alexandria to take on Bishop Ireton.  Then, Friday, Paul VI has its home opener as they host Bishop McNamara.  PVI finishes the week with an out-of-conference matchup at Flint Hill on Saturday.  Come out and support your Paul VI Panthers!

Notes to Note
•   Patrick Holloway was named Panther of the Night (selected by the PVI coaching staff) for his West Charlotte game effort, while Tim Higgins and Jamall Robinson shared the honor against Episcopal.
•   Stanford Robinson picked up a pair of full scholarship offers: Big East member Marquette and ACC program Wake Forest offered the junior after his performance on Sunday, adding to his stable of high major offers.
•   The Panthers start the season ranked #3 in the DC area by the Washington Post and hold a top 25 ranking nationally by NorthStar Basketball.
•   PVI is in the midst of a run of five games over just seven days, including two sets of games on back-to-back days.  This is one of the more demanding segments of the Panther schedule for the season.

Tim hiigins to Cornell? I knew he was smart-seeing things on the baseline from stanging at mid court. ;)

Also nice to hear that he "isn't going to be a sticker on the conference" he's playing in.

I had a chance to watch Stan Robinson play yesterday evening when his school, Pope Paul VI (PVI) defeated Bishop Ireton 71-58 on the road. PVI is the third ranked team in the Washington, DC area and #25 in the nation according to USA Today. Robinson has teammates who have declared to George Mason, Cornell, Navy, and Fairfield, leading to a very high level of play in yesterday’s contest.

Overall Player Impression
Robinson was an extremely athletic and talented player who has the game to help a high-major D-1 school. His build and athleticism are comparable to those of Vander Blue, but unlike Blue, Robinson has a beautiful shooting stroke. His two weak areas, defense and ball-handling, should be correctable with practice and repetition.

Positives
1)   Athleticism – Robinson is very quick and has hops to spare. He had two dunks; one on an offensive rebound that bounced high off the rim and another on a fast break that brought the entire gym to its feet… and it was a road game. He plays slowly, except when he needs to be quick and can explode. Think Dwyane Wade, not Darius Johnson-Odom.
2)   Shooting – Robinson made all four jumpers he took in the game, including one 3-pointer. He is left-handed, but still has a classic jump-shooting form. His high release says he’ll have no issues getting his shot off at the next level.
3)   Passing – Though Robinson was not asked to handle the ball much, he showed an ability to make difficult passes, including several no-look dishes to cutters and contested post-entry passes. His single assist in the game does not accurately reflect his skill-level.

Negatives
1)   Defense – When Robinson was in a position to guard one-on-one on the perimeter, his man blew past him on several occasions. He needs to improve his footwork on lateral and backward movement. He also tended to gamble, going for steals by jumping passing lanes and sliding over to take charges. There were mixed results with both.
2)   Ball Handling – Robinson was very sloppy with the basketball, accounting for five turnovers, despite not handling with much frequency. It did appear that he has some flashy moves in the open court, but will need significant improvement in this area as he will play the 2-guard position in college.

Jury’s Out
1)   Rebounding – Offensively he grabbed three boards including the aforementioned put-back slam. He tended to get his body in good rebounding position, but I didn’t get to see him fight for a contested board. On the defensive end, Robinson was being asked to get back on defense when a shot was taken, so wasn’t much of a factor.
2)   Game Management – Robinson was a vocal player, talking to his teammates and directing traffic on the court. He scored his 15 points very quietly, not needing to possess the ball much and not scoring his first point until shortly before halftime. While the ability to score without the ball is positive, the lack of ball possession may have been attributed to his propensity for turnovers.
3)   Scoring - PVI’s style of play didn’t include Robinson attempting to drive one-on-one in the half court, so his ability to break down a defender could not be gauged. His scoring consisted of four jumpers, a put-back dunk, and a dunk and reverse layup – both in transition.
