Too early to be as valuable as they are later in the season.

The question was whether it would be you, Lenny or someone else.  I had my money on you.

From the article I linked from the NCAA... “A larger sample size generally leads to more accurate analysis, so the extra two-plus weeks of data will presumably lead to less-apparent variance in the first edition of the NET rankings.”

So yes, less valuable today then they will be in a few weeks.

Duquesne, whose best win is over KenPom #118 Indiana State, checks in at #20. Next best win over #144 Radford.
NET is very dumb.

When Duquesne is in the Final Four, we'll laugh as we look back and fondly recall how valuable this NET ranking was.

The NET was pretty wild with the rankings in December last year as well.  I thought it worked out fairly decent by the end, other than seemingly (to my eyes) favoring slower tempo teams.

So we're 53 in NET.  That makes us a Q2a home game for our opponents.   Yet, WI team sheet has us listed as a Q3 win.

Or am I missing something here?

NET is very dumb.

It’s early and that is why it isn’t that valuable at the moment.  It will normalize with more data as more games are played.

In effect it is very dumb (less valuable) this time of year, but beware saying that as it irks some here.

This I do not understand.  Sure, Bucky beat us head-to-head, but their stats otherwise suck.

Wisconsin: 5-5, Q1 0-3, Q2 2-2, Q3 0-0, Q4 3-0
Marquette: 7-2, Q1 0-2, Q2 3-0, Q3 1-0, Q4 3-0

The only advantage Wisco has is in the average opponent rank.  Theirs is 12th best, but ours is "only" 36th best.

Net Rankings before conference schedules are in full swing no matta. Intriguing data point and we get to all guffaw over being behind UW and DePaul. But at this point, it is as useful as which way the wind is blowing.

Correct, if we are talking P6 teams.

I believe they are the only P6 school even in the 200’s and they are almost at 300.

The next worse school I think is Northwestern at 174.  I may have missed one, however.

Good call Jay Bee, I want out of this state so badly I didn’t even see it on the list.  Cal slightly worse than Northwestern at 182.

First and foremost, any ranking that has Dayton at #10 is highly suspect, full stop.

But even ignoring UD, keep in mind that - beyond the fact that the NET formula still has not been released (i.e. they may still be making tweaks to the formula) - we're still dealing with a very small data set of 9-10 games, which becomes even smaller once you remove the cupcakes outliers that yield little to no influence for most of the teams in the top 100 or so.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

But it's still dumb.
What's the point of a ranking system that provides wildly inaccurate results, even if only initially?

I recall that - early on - the NCAA didn't release the RPI rankings until sometime in February... it wasn't until the formula was being replicated by ESPN, dailyRPI, and others that they relented.

Frankly, I thought such might have been the impetus to keeping the NET formula confidential, i.e. they could go back to releasing the rankings later in the season when they had a better element of accuracy/relevance to them.  But nope, evidently not.

It’s as if the ranking system is not very valuable this time of year.

As you know, there is a huge diff b/w between inaccurate/nearly useless but will be “ok” later as compared to good, but will get better.

It’s of not much value today as shown by some of the schools in the top 25 that will be nowhere near there in four weeks.  Yes, it has some value, but it is limited at this time.
