Just curious to hear everyones thoughts. If you were in charge and had 3 things you could change, what would you do to get us out of this slump (aside from firing wojo because he's not leaving this year).
1. Play symir as PG. We need a better ball handler, what's the worse that could happen at this point.
2. Push tempo more, feel like a lot of times we've had numbers but slow the tempo to set up an offense.
3. try to go small, play no 5s so we can open up the lane and actually get some penetration.
-
4. Fire Bill Scholl

Less scoring from the position and much lower on-ball defense than alternatives
2. Push tempo more, feel like a lot of times we've had numbers but slow the tempo to set up an offense.
Given our TO rate and defensive implosion of late we should actually slow down the pace. Our transition D is garbage and we commit hella TOs when we push pace
3. try to go small, play no 5s so we can open up the lane and actually get some penetration.
We should definitely take our two best rebounders off the court all the time

4. Fire Bill Scholl
For what? He didn't hire Wojo, Bill Cords did. Bill Scholl also hired the now BECOY Meghan Duffy as the women's HC for this season. He doesn't seem to be the issue.
-
Have a plan for when the nation’s leading scorer gets double teamed. Crazy concept but it tends to happen

100% agree

I am just saying someone has to be accountable. If not Scholl, then Lovell. If not Lovell, then the BOT. Who is the BOT accountable to?
-
This is a tough one as there aren't many major changes that can be made at this point.
1) Reign Markus in. Try to get through to him that even though his teammates are in a shooting slump, he has them. An open look for one of them is a viable option rather than dribbling into constant double teams.
2) Run more offense through Anim as opposed to McEwen.
3) Give Cain more opportunities to create and score. Even if it's a few more pull-up jumpers inside the arc.

RIP Marquette Gyros is a great handle, you need a friend to be your side kick and name them Cheese Sauce

This. I am actually intrigued with what he would do with the hire.
Interestingly enough Cords (O'neill+, Deane (-), Crean (+), Nojo (-) | Sosojo (=) | Projo (+))
So he probably has a 50% hit rate, which isnt terrible in the grand scheme of college bball.

Accountable for what? Lovell nor the current BOT nor the current AD hired Wojo. If you want to write a sternly worded letter to Doc Rivers for advocating for Wojo, feel free.

So Wojo gets to stay at Marquette forever because nobody is responsible for him? Yikes.

An open look for one of them is a viable option rather than dribbling into constant double teams. It seems like this is only a problem late in games, after repeated open misses have led Markus and Wojo to the realization that only Markus can be trusted to shoot the ball.
2) Run more offense through Anim as opposed to McEwen.
3) Give Cain more opportunities to create and score. Even if it's a few more pull-up jumpers inside the arc.
-
Cut back on the amount of high ball screens set for Markus by the bigs. It almost never results in a switch, and only brings size at him that he struggles to pass over.
-
Pick and roll with Bailey instead of a center.
IF markus is going to drive, pull up at 6. to 10 feet, like he did to get a foul on weems. he is not getting the call when he creates contact at the. rim. Most. times he shouldnt, it seens the centers are going straight up.
SJU will be pressing, make them pay. Transition 3 for Markus all day.
As an aside, (you can ignore this Jaybee) MH is shooting 45% from the field during this slide. He shot 35% last year. If anything, he should shoot more in the first half, less at the end.
-
1) Take Koby out of the lineup. Not just the starting lineup, but he should only get in when needed. He's been awful on offense & even if he's a better defender than some alternatives (Sy, Greg) our defense is trash right now.
2) Start Cain & Elliott over McEwen & Sacar. Let Sacar be the energy guy off the bench, but he's not deserving max minutes.
3) Slow the effing tempo. We don't turn teams over, and when we play fast, we turn it over. There are 9 teams in the kenpom top-50 that have a top-100 tempo, including us. We are 7th among those teams in offensive TO% & dead last in defensive TO%. Why would a team with a loose handle and inability to generate transition opportunities push the pace? It makes no sense. Minimize possessions, shorten the game, maximize the value of our greatest asset, the three point shot.

Willing to try 2 and 3. Can't do #1. He gets scored on repeatedly every time he is in the game.

Does anyone think Koby might grad transfer, or just leave after the season like Ed did? Based on his body language and overall struggles, he doesn’t seem to have enjoyed his time much here. I also don’t think he likes playing with Markus, so maybe things will get better next year.

Regarding option #1
I keep seeing this n im sorry but its so far from the answer. Take the ball from the only guy on theteam that can hit a shot n give more shots to tge wide open brick layers. Yes markus makes mistakes but his offensive efficiency dwarfs the others.
But as an answer id go more greg n less mcewen n therefore more sacar on the ball.

You mean the open guys that can't hit jump shots?

I would be in favor of mcewen leaving, ive see nothing in his game that would inducate his sucking is caused by players around him. Big strong athletic kid, horribly poorly skilled and a bball iq of a 3rd grader

The strangest part of Kobe's game are his high dribbles. Whenever he gets flustered he either travels or starts dribbling the ball hard so it gets up to his eye level. Once you start watching for it you can't unsee it.

I'm not saying you take a ton of his looks away, but he absolutely has to realize that he is going to be swarmed at the end of games. I'm simply sick of seeing Markus losing the ball in pivotal moments because he held on for too long. When he has 2 or 3 defenders around him he's not tall enough to execute great passes. Get it to someone else more quickly and if they can get it back to Markus for a decent look, that's fine. Don't try to tell me the nobody but Markus can touch the ball approach to end every single possession in close games is the answer.

I cannot ignore it, but will help.
Last year - last 7 games... M2N: 97.5 ORtg, 41% usage, 43.2% eFG%
This year.. last 6 games.. 113.5 Ortg, 38% usage, 55.7% eFG%
King him

The bucket of what he does poorly is over flowing. He rebounds n plays good defense but fouls excessively. In fact i often rooted for that early second foul

3 Changes ??? Hmmmmm
1-Willie Warrior--- Head Coach
2- Mike Deane's Seat Belt --Asst Coach
3- FKA Humalung Asst coach
I only get 3 changes but I figure these 3 have ALL of the answers and will get better results... Figuring they have enough guys here to fit the rest of their staff... Keefe...Curbina....White trash...ETC... They will have MU in the Final four every year ! ! ! Guaranteed ! ! ! Just Sayin' !!! 8-)
-
Maybe I missed it, but so far 100% of the changes people have made are to the offense.
Offense was a problem in the Creighton and Depaul games. The defense has been the problem in every game.

Rarely has the defense shown up like it did in the home game versus Villanova.

The defense has been the problem in every game.
I've long wanted them to stop pressuring the ball 30+ feet out, but Woj won't ever change that.
Against Hall, they tried shading a help defender over when the big would hedge, which in theory I like, but Hall moved the ball so quickly and made them pay.

I was never accused of knowing the defensive side of the ball when I played in highschool. I only dunked.. My fondest memory of playing.highschool was holding a high major D1 player to 47. he would have scored 60 if there was a 3 pt line.

I am just saying someone has to be accountable. If not Scholl, then Lovell. If not Lovell, then the BOT. Who is the BOT accountable to?
God almighty himself.

Normally I would see it, but there are so few guard options next year that I think he stays.

No one. It is a self-governing entity.

When he puts it all together, he can be a good player. But for some reason, that doesn't seem to happen often enough. Maybe it's the adjustment to the Big East, or getting used to playing with a guy like Markus, or trying to do too much to fill a gap he knew MU had. Who knows what the root cause is. It seems to me that if he could just get out of his own head, he'd be a lot more effective for us. Easier said than done, I guess.

There were literally people here suggesting that he would be second team All BE before the season started.

God almighty himself.
Actually it's first the Holy Spirit. Then Jesus. Then God. This complex hierarchy rewards forgiveness and not accountability.
-
So, if Wojo reads this bb, who's advice should he pick from a number of conflicting suggestions?
-
So we are talking the last two minutes now?
Most of the time he dribbles into double teams and loses the ball is toward the end of the game.
-
1. Play more zone defense. Getting killed on penetration
2. Offensively play a more spread out isolation game
3. Pick n roll screener should be with players who can actually hit an outside shot. Cain, Anim, Bailey or Elliott. Not John, McEwen or Johnson.
4. McEwen is a turnover machine. Right now he is a 3 more than a 1 or 2. Get him off the ball completely. Him or Anim on the court, not both at the same time. Cain in for McEwen.
5. Bailey and Cain need to be more aggressive, driving more to the hoop. Good things happen when they do.
6. We need more paint touches. Cain, Bailey, Anim driving to the hoop. Dump the ball down low to Johnson/John and look for high screen kick back outs.
-

I’m hoping his issues stem from the brace on his right thumb. I wonder if that’s what impacts his shooting, dribbling, and why he throws some passes in the stands.
-

The thing that annoys me the most about him is that when he "shoots" around the basket all he does is try to get fouled. Makes almost no attempt to actually make the shot.
-
There were literally people here suggesting that he would be second team All BE before the season started.
I think one guy said “at worst” 2nd team all Big East. Would he be starting on any other Big East team?
-
He shows glimpses.
Everyone in the rotation (Koby, Sacar, Theo, BB, Jayce, Jamal, GE and Symir) other than Markus “shows glimpses”. It’s what role players/back ups do.
-
1. Bill Cords was never invited back to lead the coaching search
2. Piano Bob
3. Markus still wins BE POY despite the late season collapse
-

Not mine. Maybe #1, but I addressed that Koby's defense isn't so outstanding that it mitigates his offense. But #2 is about roster changes that improve us on both sides of the ball and I think a slower offensive pace would help our defense because it would reduce the need to get back in transition & keep the players fresher on that end.
