Postgame Notes from the Bradley Center
« on: November 17, 2008, 10:43:39 PM »
From Bradley Center Press Conference

Nov. 17, 2008 vs. Chicago State
  • Marquette's 106-87 victory marks the second straight game the Golden Eagles have eclipsed the 90-point mark on offense.  it's been nearly 14 years since the last time an MU team scored more than 90 points in back-to-back contests.  During the 1994-1995 season, Marquette rattled off wins over UW-Milwaukee (W, 101-59), Northwestern (W, 94-60), and Farleigh Dickinson (W, 96-74) to open up the month of December.
  • Tonight's victory marked win number 1,399 for the Marquette program since it's first year of men's basketball in 1916-1917.  Marquette will attempt to become the 50th program in NCAA history to reach the 1,400-win mark the Saturday, November, 22 when the Golden Eagles host the Milwaukee Panthers.
  • Marquette's made 16 free throws in the first half equaled its total number of field goals at intermission as the Golden Eagles went to the foul line 22 times in the first stanza
  • Senior guard Dominic James surpassed Aaron Hutchins (1995-1998) to move into the 14th spot among Marquette's all-time scoring leaders.  With eight points tonight, James now has 1,444 total points in his fourth season with the Golden Eagles and 330 points shy of breaking George Thompson's (1966-1969) school record of 1,773 career points.
  • Tonight's tilt was the first of four games Marquette will play as part of the 2008 Chicago Invitational.  The event picks back up on November 25 when Marquette hosts Texas Southern at the Bradley Center.  Each of the eight participating schools will then play Thanksgiving weekend in a round-robin format at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
  • Senior guard Wesley Matthews led four Marquette players scoring double figures with 26 points.  Matthews tallied a career-high 27 points in last Friday's season opener vs. Houston Baptist.
  • Sophomore Patrick Hazel contributed a career-high 10 points as the lone Golden Eagles player to come off the bench and score in double figures.  Hazel is now 6-of-6 from the field this season, and 9-of-10 (90 percent) from the floor to begin his collegiate career.

Too bad not a lot of people saw it.

Where was the crowd tonight???  I can't remember the last time the BC was so empty.  Did the MU women play at home tonight - is that why there was only half a band and the dance team was missing??

Yea, both the women and men were playing at the same time. Thus both the band and cheer were basically half size. Student section didnt seem too bad for a flurry monday night. Though my section was fairly empty in the BC.

The dance team was watching the women defeat Sacred Heart 77-55 at the AL.

Was at the game too - nice offense - I like what Buzz is doing, posting up guards, etc. - working!  Hazel was great, Burke not so great; Wes ruled again - awesome. JM and LH had great games as well; DJ missed a lot of FTs and shots.
We gave up WAY too many points tho - way too many.  And we fouled way too much too - some bad calls, but we still fouled way too much - and with a thin bench, this could really hurt us.

Nice to be at the game - but the BC was pretty empty.

A quote I found interesting from the recap from Hayward, re: Matthews.

"I think he's a lot more comfortable," said teammate Lazar Hayward, who scored 19 of his 21 points in the second half. "This offense is predicated on guys who can do a lot of different things. That's why he stands out a little more than last year."

super icy conditions was a big reason.
my ride took nearly 55 minutes to get to Tosa from Elm Grove!!.. bridges closed, heavy traffic.
then it took another :30 to get to the game from Tosa.
lucky it was  foul fest, as we arrived with 8:00 left in the first half.

nasty night.

It's about time Wes got his.

DJ peaked early in his MU career. Jerel got last year's limelight. Now, Wes is showing he deserves equal recognition.

I say redshirt them all and bring them back for one more year!
