Not like there was scoop or really any online sports forums back in 2001 but I gotta imagine it was a pretty somber time for the University and Marquette fans at the time of Al's passing.
Was the "Give em Hell Al" guy's identity ever revealed? Al's days were way before my time so I'm wondering if this guy was a student and legend around campus, a passionate alum, or just another Milwaukee drunk? Seems like the dude was pretty big deal.
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
LennyYou said it best, we were "it". Times are different and could never be repeated. There are not many really cool people and he was the coolest of them all.
LittleWadeYou are partially correct. I think Rick's piece highlighted a specific event that turned into a chorus of yells. I was young at the time but do remember there was one voice that started it all. It was one voice on a one night that started it all.
I'll never forget the headline of Al's obituary in the New York Times:Al McGuire, 72, Coach, TV Analyst and Character, DiesYes, he certainly was a "character."

I always loved that the band actually developed a piece to allow that legendary to be used as a chant . I can still hear it ringing in my head. 4ever and his bandmates delivered the goods.
With all due respect Lenny's Tap, I hope you are not thinking of the 'Lanche or Jim Hegarty's or your Scoop name when you say 'bum bars'. These were 'fine' institutions back in the day that I thought fit in very well with the whole 'Al' mystique. One could learn things about life if you went to the 'Lanche at 10:00 am after bombing a chemistry final. Sort of like the 'spend 6 months as a bartender and 6 months as a cab driver to be really educated' quote. I too have a 'give 'em hell Al' t-shirt, the 'official' final 4 shirt sold at the Omni and the famous banana yellow band hat. I tried putting on the final 4 shirt to watch the 2003 F4 but couldn't get it past my chin. Fortunately the band hat still fits, although it's a bit tight. Can't believe my head got bigger - if anything I'm feeling much more humble these days.
