This is a student's quote? Sounds more like something the DPS captain would say.

“(This assault is) obviously something of some seriousness because in most cases (MPD) would just give someone a battery citation, and they’d be on their way, but MPD looked at it as substantial battery, and that’s a more serious offense,” the student said.

Can't be taking swings at officers.

That's a bad idea.

That is true because the article said that the original officer on the scene was a woman. Pluse we all know us good Catholic boys would never hit a woman.

We need a quote from the "man on the street" student, otherwise there's nothing to the story.

"A substantial battery charge carries a penalty of up to a $50,000 and up to 15 years in prison."

Yikes. Sounds like this athlete's career is done. I'm actually surprised its the same as battery against a student. You'd think hitting an DPS officer would be like hitting a cop, more serious an offense.

Other than the fact the Milwaukee media hasn't picked it up and gone batcrap crazy with it, how is it know that it isn't a BB player?

Wow - An athlete incident sullying the reputation of Marquette and Marquette athletics and Chicos isn't all over this thread?

We really should stop recruiting JUCOs in our other sports programs, and definitely may need to raise eligibility and academic even higher in light of this latest incident - as raising eligibility standards to their current level certainly wasn't enough to curtail bad behavior by an 18-22 year college student/athlete.

Hopefully administration will knee jerk react on this one too and raise standards even further, and in the event this athlete wasn't a JUCO - perhaps we can also move to reduce/eliminate recruiting from the high school ranks - and focus solely on those kids who attend prep school, or come from overseas.

Being new to the board you wouldn't understand the context and perhaps sarcasm of my comments.  It isn't bitterness, it's more wisdom - you learn as you go along that at times adults/administrations knee jerk and overreact to incidents, and often impose "solutions" that in no way curtail the "problem," as the "problem" ultimately will never be eliminated...as its just a part of life...an example might be underage drinking..you make it illegal, impose fines, etc., but it still happens...just as drunk driving, drug usage, etc. So just as our administration raised eligibility standards for athletes, and ultimately making recruiting JUCO's more difficult - none of that will curtail offcourt incidents by student athletes.  IT's going to happen - they are 18-22 year old boys...

Melissa, there have been many events surrounding MU and the basketball team since Scoop came online 7 years ago.   There have been heated arguments surrounding some of the less fortunate events.    You will find the longer you spend on scoop, the more clear the reasons for the animosities become.    People don't gain reputations after just a few posts or in a vacuum.   Patterns emerge.

Exactly.  There are situations and there are SITUATIONS.   This is an gnat situation compared to what went down a few years ago and people with common sense will see it as such.  When the Chicago Tribune runs three front page stories, every newscast in town leads with the story for multiple days, you make ESPN and other national media, then someone can compare the two.   The incidents a few years ago did sully the university...badly...this is why there were CONSEQUENCES and people fired, policies changed.  This current situation.....stupid, but nothing more.  Surely Ners, Tower, Blueteaux and others understand the commons sense difference.

And Melissa, patterns definitely emerge.  There are those that stick their heads in the sand and there are those that don't.

You're partially right.

Does raising admissions "solve" the issues? Eh. I don't think that is does or will.

However, I don't want MU simply shrugging and saying "boys will be boys" when there are incidents of really poor decision making. That's a bad stance to take.

MU (as an institution) needs to help guide the student athletes on how they should and shouldn't be acting, and enforce the appropriate consequences. I think we can all agree on that. That applies to every sports team, including LaCrosse, track, golf, etc. etc.

The coaching staff should certainly be involved, but as a matter of checks and balances, other parties need some visibility as well.

Not that complicated.

If/when MU continues to show good judgement when these situations occur, then I think we'll all be more confident in the outcomes.

A student involved in the incident, who chose to remain anonymous, told the Tribune immediately after the incident that the student athlete who struck the DPS officers was under the influence of an unidentified illegal substance.

How do they know if it's illegal if it's unidentified?  In the words of the late Johnnie Cochran:  "If it's unidentifiable, the case against him is friable."

(Johnnie's one-liners were a bit of a stretch in his later years.)

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

This is a "gnat" because it's not a basketball player. This is much, much more serious than underage college kids being in a bar (not drinking) or a one punch fight between two students over a (presumed) racial slur. I don't recall hearing you or the local media shrugging off those non events as "gnats", but I'm not the least bit surprised.

+1

But of course we all know what sells newspapers, etc.

Kid made a very big mistake and will be very fortunate if he doesn't face a pretty serious penalty.  I've certainly 'erred' in my life but was always smart enough (sober enough) to remember that 'Yes officer' was the only appropriate response.

I liken it to watching an episode of Campus PD.  Hey kids, when the party gets busted quietly walk out the front door and go back to your dorm immediately just like the officer says.  Hang around and mouth off.... plan on wearing some cuffs.

43% of people can't identify New York on a map. http://technorati.com/lifestyle/travel/article/americans-lack-geographic-literacy-cant-find/     That doesn't make it ok.  I'm not worried about the ignorant people in this country, I was worried about the image of the school.  Apparently so were the people that run it, which is why they reacted the way they did.  It was good to see a few adults in charge.

Yes, not a basketball player is a big reason why it would be "gnat" like coverage.

I was comparing this situation to two sexual assault situations, for which it is not even close to as serious as this one....gnat like.   I don't see where I compared it at all to bar fights or presumed slur....I don't see where anyone did.

Make no mistake, Chicos would be creating much Hoopla around this if it were a men's basketball player.

Double standards? But of course. We know that and still accept him for who/what he is.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Saw that a student athlete was arrested for assaulting a DPS Officer.  Any ideas of who is in custody?

When our African American basketball players were cited for (oh, the humanity) being in a bar (not drinking) underage and it became a cause celebe in local print and radio where was your outrage? When an African American basketball player was involved in a one punch fight over a presumed racial slur where were your "this deserves less than gnat like coverage" comments?
But when it's likely that a white student athlete assaults a campus cop it's a non story to you.

More than once you've brought up the bigoted coverage outlets like the New York Times gave the Duke lacrosse case. I agree. It was disgraceful, but for them the idea of privileged white Duke student athletes sexually assaulting a poor black girl was too appealing to let a few facts get in the way. Yet here you are three years after the fact referring to something that never met the threshold of anything more than an allegation as "a sexual assault situation". You're massaging the facts to fit your preferred narrative, just like the Times did.

When did I say, or even imply, that sexual assault accusations are OK if most people don't know about them? I was merely refuting your predictably exaggerated claim that those accusations badly sullied the university. The fact is, it really didn't much at all to Marquette University's image, considering that it wasn't a major story at the time and is at most an afterthought right now.

Is your child a Lax Bro?

http://gawker.com/5915869/is-your-child-a-lax-bro
Early in my daughters's LAX career I was watching some middle schooler boys LAX.  I got Hooked when I watched a big tall Lax bro pick up a smaller boy by his shoulder harness and slam him to the grounded, one handed.  Sure he was expelled from the game, but the creativity of violence hooked me.  Despite that having observed my daughter play club soccer and LAX, I am sure LAX is much less dangerous and violent than soccer.

The man who took hits of LSD could have been any college kid, sports or not.  Just too bad it was at Marquette.

But it wasn't. It was a Lax Bro at a Zedd concert. Because of course it was.

Thank you all for the entertainment.  This thread so far has been very amusing.  Never heard of Laxbros until today.

Official story says that when found by his friend, the student was making "extreme gestures."  What could someone possibly gesticulate that would fall under the category of "extreme?"

For starters, slugging a teammate in the face who tried to get him back to his dorm before he brought attention to himself....
