Title: Go-Go's Documentary (MU connection)
Post by: Not A Serious Person on August 02, 2020, 10:36:17 PM
Showtime rolled out a new documentary this week about the 80s punk/pop band the Go-Go's.  It is very good and worth a watch if you're into 80s New Wave or the Go-Go's.

The Go-Go's are the only all-female band that wrote their own music, played their own instruments and had an album reach #1.  It was their 1981 debut album ("Beauty and the Beat").  They were the first , and to date, the only band that fits this description.

---------------

MU connection ....

The lead guaritist, and song writer, is Jane Wiedlin. She wrote the 80s mega hit "Our Lips Are Sealed."

She was born in Oconomowoc and grew up in West Allis.

Her parents, oral surgeon Robert Arthur Wiedlin, Sr. and Betty Jane (née Herro) met as students at Marquette.

The Bangles would also qualify, but their best performing second album only hit #2. However, they had 5 top #10 singles while the Go Gos surprisingly only had 2. I’ll asterisk one of the 5 cause Prince wrote Manic Monday, while the band wrote the rest of them.

Hazy Shade of Winter was written by Paul Simon.

Actually, "Manic Monday", "Walk Like An Egyptian", and "Hazy Shade Of Winter" were not written by the band, and "In Your Room" and "Eternal Flame" were co-written with hit-making hacks Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg.  Stick with the first Bangles album ("All Over The Place") which is phenomenal.  Everything after that is pretty much junk.
