Title: Cold Weather Tips
Post by: Eldon on February 05, 2021, 10:53:08 AM
Some of this may be obvious, but maybe not.

1) Keep automobile gas tank at least half full

2) Keep blankets, perishable food, and an extra set of clothes/layers in your car (in case you get stranded)

3) To prevent pipes bursting, open cabinets to allow the house heat to warm them (something I never thought about until I read this earlier today)

4) Keep space heaters far from anything flammable (and careful on carpeting)

Other tips?

Extremeties:

Hands

Head

Feet.

Make an effort in just those three categories physically, and it makes a big difference.

Piled up snow can cause your furnace not to vent properly. Remove buildup of snow around your outdoor vents prevents high efficiency furnaces from shutting down.

Cold Weather Safety for Pets...

-Watch for animals that may have sought shelter in your warmer car engine or wheel well. Make noise before starting your cars.

-Check their paws. Salt on side walks and frostbite, can injure pads of your pets. Wipe them clean with a warm washcloth.

-If it's too cold outside for you, it is too cold for your pet. If your pet is shivering, wining, anxious or slows down, your pet is at risk of hypothermia.

Bet your hyper competitive 14 year old you can clear snow faster with a shovel than he can with a small, single stage snowblower.   ;D

Remember alcohol doesn't actually warm you so if you're drinking make Irish coffees, hot toddies, mulled wine, hot buttered rum, or spiked apple cider.

Turn your faucets on so they drip to prevent pipes from freezing.

Well that's like me saying scotch is the worst without identifying if I mean speyside, Islay, highland, etc. there single malt Irish, column still, pot still, peated, etc.
