Not sure we “retire” any numbers any more.

We WILL place “0” in the rafters with Markus’ name on it.

Markus should be there, along with George, Dean, Glenn, Butch, Bo, Earl, Dwyane, Al and others. Needs to happen.

Period.

No question at all!

It should be retired whenever he can make it back to campus next year. Not even a question.

Why? McNeal had the scoring record for, what, 8 years? Why is his number not retired?

Yes, of course.

The better question might be, "How soon can we put Markus' number in the rafters?"

Markus has scored 2700 points over his MU career.   He has scored 1,000 more points than all except 5 Warriors in history.
Hopefully a few more will be added to the tally this month.

I don’t dismiss it.

The BEPOY, to me, is the better argument than the scoring record.

McNeal no. Not clear to me that he was the best player on his own team for most of his career.

Markus yes.

That’s the difference. He has accomplishments beyond McNeal ever had, beyond just scoring.

It's not like he broke the record by 100. He broke it by 800. PRN, if you actually believe his jersey should not ve in the rafters, that says more about.you than him

Howard is a type of player that likely will never be seen at MU again. He destroyed the record books and set marks that likely will never come close to being touched. I would have to think retiring with his number would be a done deal.
Truthfully, if on a committee discussing or voting on this, it would be hard pressed to come up with a reason not do it. IMO, it is retired regardless of success this March.

I’m not saying it shouldn’t at some point, but I don’t understand the slam dunk nature and rush to do so.

Did you know it’s likely Travis Diener would’ve surpassed George Thompson’s scoring record had he not gotten hurt toward the end of his senior year? As you know Travis was a vital cog in our run to the Final Four. Should his number be retired?

And if we are talking about record holders, how about Jim McIlvaine, whose blocked shot record is likely more insurmountable than the scoring record? Oh, he was also a massive part of a Sweet 16 team run that revived the program...as was Tony Miller, whose assist record will certainly never be broken. How about those two?

Why does Howard warrant special treatment?

Even when Wade’s number went up there were those that felt it should’ve waited until he received a degree. I may have been in that camp...if I was I was wrong...but there were people who felt that way. Even so, #3 didn’t go up right away.

By the way, for that very reason, Davidson has not retired Steph Curry’s number.

Give it a few years for chrissakes.

With you, Travis and Tony Miller. Nobody will ever beat Tony’s assist record. Plus, conference title, 3 NCAA’s, Sweet 16 and NIT Finals, key to bringing MU hoops back from the abyss.

I also believe one must graduate before their number is raised, but with the rush to honor Wade that ship has sailed.

McNeal also steals leader. Btw, I am not advocating Jerel’s number be retired.

Diener 3rd career assists. McNeal 7th and Jerel was not what I’d call a willing passer

The difference with Jerel and Howard is Jerel was the programs all time scoring leader which is a great accomplishment. Howard is shooting up the record book with some truly all time great players in CBB history.

I'm undecided on retirement but the comparison to Jerel isn't really a good one.

Seriously?

Marcus is at 2700 points (and he isn't done yet), Jerel finished at 1985.

So a top 25 all time scorer vs a guy who scored a lot.

Syracuse hasn’t retired Lawrence Moten’s number.  Boston College hasn’t retired Troy Bell’s number.  And BC doesn’t exactly have a wealth of good basketball talent in their history.

I think the speed at which we retire Markus’ number will be relative to whether or not Wojo stays.  If Wojo remains at Marquette, it’ll be retired in the next year or two for program optics and reasons of general slurpiness.  If Wojo leaves, MU will retire it at some point, but may sit on it for a few years.

Is it?  I went on BC’s athletics website and he wasn’t listed under “retired men’s basketball” numbers.

I would also like to clarify that I’m not anti retiring 0. I should also say I think there are a few numbers in our rafters that should not be there.

I think it should probably just be Lee, Ellis, Kojis, GT, Wade and a banner for Al. I am a huge fan of Doc Rivers but his jersey doesn’t belong up there. The others (Tatum, Meminger, Lucas) are debatable. All great! I just don’t think they rise to that level.

Yes. Team and conference scoring honors, great ambassador for MU, will graduate in May. If not him, then you shouldn't do it for anyone.
I'm fine with banner idea as opposed to "retirement" of the number.
