Title: Matthews' Unsung Record Last Night
Post by: Niv Berkowitz on February 18, 2009, 01:14:12 PM
With all the hype Jerel's (deservedly) received for most steals and points in MU history, one record was broken last night that typifies the player that got it.

Wes Matthews set the record for most free throws made at MU. This is friggin' awesome and a testament to Wes doing the same thing for four years...that is...driving to the basket and getting to the line!!

He's finishing more this year and playing better than ever, but in my opinion, he's been the most consistent of the Big Three the last 3.5 years. He always takes charges on the defensive end, and gets to the rim on the offensive. An awesome accomplishment for a hell of a college baller and a great teammate too (as personified in that photo celebrating Frozena's hoop).

I love Wes, I think he handles himself very well and is a great representative of MU.  But I don't think he's been the most consistent player over the past 4 yrs.  He disappeared too often his first 3 yrs under Crean.  For whatever reason, I'm really glad he's blossomed and played as well as he has this year.

I was at the game and they did announce it when it happened and he received a nice applause, as well as Jerel's steals record.  Wes has been an excellent representative for the University, but I don't think he's been the most consistent by any means.  I would say without a doubt that Jerel has been the most consistent night in and night out over the years, not to take anything away from Wes.

WE ARE MARQUETTE!!!

In his interview with Homer, Wes says he "deferred" to the rest of the team far too often. I wonder if that was of his own volition or if it was a by-product of his role in Crean's strictly set-based offense, which revolved around Novak in 05-06, DJ in 06-07, and Jerel in 07-08. I think this has been discussed before, but I think the freedom of Buzz's offense much better suits Wesley's game.

I couldn't be happier for Wes. He is the kind of player every young kid should strive to be, just does all of the little things right.

I loved him right away when he came in and took charges like a mad men as a freshman. Best yet, he still does it, just as hard, to this day.

Let's just say that Wesley Matthews is enjoying himself much more this year than in past years.   ;)
