Very good night, but I wonder how good Lehigh is. The Xavier score on the surface was not impressive.

Lehigh projected to be good. They have the two time Patriot League player of the year Tim Kempton Jr. and some other solid returning vets. Should challenge for their league title.
Kempton Jr had a big night last night.

I love that we've gotten to the point where SEC teams are our cupcakes ;)
-
Hoyas make good on promises to open up the offense winning 105-60 over USC Upstate. Scored 68 points in the half most in school history.
Rodney Pryor scored 32 points going 6/8 from 3pt range Posting an efficiency rating of 179.3 8-)

That's like MU flaunting their 106 points against Rockhurst.
I'll be shocked if a Thomspon coach team opens anything up.

Great game by Pryor today.
HSB, what is the general feeling in hoyaland about JTIII this year? Does he seem to have a little leash or is it put up or shut up year?

Maybe your prediction from last season will come true this time around
Heart: Hoyas get a 1 seed as they win both the regular season and BET.
More realistically: Hoyas get a 3 seed.
POY is Dunn's to lose. Unless Providence totally tanks and finishes below 6th I don't see how you don't give it to him. He's going to have multiple triple doubles. DSR is clearly a first team player and would be more deserving of a Co-POY than Archidiacino ever was, but I'll stick with just Dunn.

I think this year might finally be different......time will tell

I think for the casual fans the ones who don't really pay attention till march it's put up or shut up. For people who actually follow the team I think he's got 2-3 years to get to the sweet 16 or beyond before it's time to change horses.
I just wanted to point out Pryor's performance for the person who said he wasn't going to be great or efficient. I know it's one game, but he looks like the real deal. The score of this game doesn't even matter. Anyone who watched the game would see a new Georgetown team. We still have a long way to go, but the intensity and energy and pace are much different from years past. We'll get a better idea of where we stand over the next two weeks with Maryland and Maui coming up. But this team is going to be nothing like last year.
-
Butler beat Northern Colorado. Big East now 8-0.
-
Seton Hall's win over Central Connecticut makes it 9-0. Let's watch DePaul screw it up later tonight.
-
Big East 10-0 . DePaul wins.

Big East is now the only undefeated conference. Of course we have only 10 teams and have not played another team in the top 10, but this is nice to see.

Incredible atmosphere at Purdue for the Villanova game tonight. Purdue just hit a half court shot at buzzer to tie it at half time 39-39.
Ponds and Lovett look very good in the backcourt tonight for St Johns , as they are pullin away from Binghampton
-
Jesus, Josh Hart is so freakin good
-
oops nm
-
'Nova wins this on talent but Haas looks like a giant out there and they are using him well. a) didn't see the first half or how he got 3 fouls so i may be missing something, and b) there's an avocado joke in there somewhere but it escapes me.
-
Nova wins. Big East still undefeated

Providence beat Vermont, Xavier beat Buffalo and the Johnnies looked good in their win. Nice to see everyone getting off to a god start.

Tomorrow night two big tests. Can we get thru the first week undefeated?!!
Hey, if people can speculate about a 30-0 MU team, I can muse about a perfect first week for the BE. ;D
-
That was a big early road win for nova and the conference

Think bigger. BE undefeated in non-conference.
-
Think bigger. BE undefeated in non-conference.
Come on now, be realistic. DePaul is still in the league.
-
Think bigger. BE undefeated in non-conference.
No way, no way, no way....well maybe...yes!
BE undefeated in non conf...MU undefeated in BET. MU BET champs! 1seed undisputed. Big Dance champs! And MU considered best team since undefeated Indiana.
And to think that I saw it on Mulberry street!
-
Do we want Creighton to Beat UW tonight?
I am not a fan of UW, but is it better at this point to beat a highly rated undefeated UW team in December?....or a UW team with a loss to Creighton and rated a little less highly?
Of course we can always get Creighton twice later....maybe the math is better if Creighton ranked higher. I know the math differentials are minor here.
Any other team my BE allegiance says Creighton...But I want UW and MU to be undefeated for a showdown. So I'm rooting for UW on that bases.

We absolutely want Creighton to win. Better for the Big East resume. If Big East resume is good, more teams make it to the dance.
-
There is no situation in which it is better for Marquette for a non-Big East team to beat a Big East team....unless Notre Dame came back. They can always lose.
-
Better for Creighton to win because we play them twice. In terms of the RPI factor of opponent's record, they count double what UW does. When you get to the next factor, opponent's opponents record, it's even more important because every other Big East team also plays them twice. In that regard, Creighton winning is roughly 18x more important to us.
-
We don't want them beat.
Out... of commission.

Awesome!
-
Georgetown snatches defeat from the jaws of victory.
JT3 is on the hot seat.
-
Just when I thought I'd never see a worse choke job than UNI in last year's NCAA tournament it took about 8 basketball game days worth of college basketball for Georgetown to upend them. I think Maryland got 8(?) free throws without even inbounding the basketball in the last 30 seconds of the game, all while trailing the Hoyas by as much as 6 inside 30 seconds. That was absolutely horrendous.

Don't forget Gtown traveled and stepped out of bounds to give the ball back too.
That was the worst thing I've ever seen.

5 point lead with 0:19 to go. 3 fouls and two turnovers (traveling and OB). Smh, G-Town.
-
I didn't see the entire game, but Rodney Pryor was everything I expected him to be. He can hit shots at times, but has bad shot selection and a poor understanding of when to shoot and when to give it up. Kid was trying too much hero ball and not enough team ball. Needs to settle his game down to be a factor against quality teams.
-
Hey hoyasincbirth, your team effing sucks. JT-III is an absolute moron and the 'lady' Hoyas haven't been relevant since Alonzo. Never come back here and say how great 'this year' your flop of a team will be. Brutal. Substituting in the Marquette women's team would have given you a better chance down the stretch.
Did I say B-R-U-T-A-L?
-

Yup. Just horrendous in every way possible. The one travel where his feet just slipped from under him is somewhat just bad luck, but continually inbounding the ball into the same corner and letting them trap without using a timeout when you have 2 to burn is a joke.
Oh and speaking of timeouts, taking a timeout after your 2nd made free throw puts you up 3 with 14 seconds left while Maryland has none to use is the dumbest timeout I think I've ever seen. Even worse than the Browns using a timeout before the first offensive play of the game last Thursday. Just horrible.

Half their points came on free throws. 37 for 42 from line. Ridiculous.
-
Missed the end. I'll give them this, they were more fun to watch. I mean, at least until they presumably threw up on their collective shoes.
-
Holy hell that was bad.

Somebody's cranky.
-
That was the difference between good and bad coaching. Worse than Buzz's choke job in Louisville.
-
Somebody's cranky.
-
For some reason I'd be fine seeing Georgetown, Creighton, and Seton Hall lose every game that isn't against UW or ND. Georgetown because they're the new BE's ND (forever overrated, think their crap don't stink), Creighton because they remind me of the Badgers, and Seton Hall because they always seem to have a few punks on their team.
So seeing the Hoyas lose in that fashion was kind of fun to me.
-
This Patton kid on Creighton is good.
-
We're talking about Gtown here. They pissed down their leg worse than I've seen in a very long time. And yet many of their faithful believe they are 'superior' to the rest of the teams in our beloved conference. They are the only team in the conference that I actively root against only supporting them when their defeat hurts the rest of us. Like tonight.
I agree with this analysis.

Sheeees....maybe so, but take it easy on our hoyasincebirth...it's been nice birth.
-
Nice freakin run Creighton!
-
I have been to quite a few Creighton games. A tremendous basketball environment. Crowd is helping them tonight.

They totally screwed the chances at a BE undefeated non-conference season. All loses in the non-conference by BE teams are now there fault, because all teams lost the motivation that comes with going undefeated. Thanks Georgetown.
-
Why does nobody call out DFW Hoya only Hoyasincebirth?
-
You could give JT 3 the Cavaliers and he'd screw them up. He recruits kids who don't understand basketball, then teaches them nothing. If he had any other last name he'd be a D-II assistant.
-
Bjays should have this, unless coach mcdermott is channeling JTIII. Up 6 w the ball w 47 seconds left

Agreed. He looked like a deer in the headlights on the sidelines as his team threw one away. As Glow said, B-R-U-T-A-L
OTOH, the Bluejays looked poised pulling away from Wisconsin. Good for them.
-
Boom. And boom. Over. Very nice.79-67 final
-
Heck of a game by Creighton. Watson is a stud, though we knew that already. They're going to be a really tough team this year. They definitely look the part of a top-3 team in the league.
-
Creighton looked great. Tremendous atmosphere lots of community support. Good win for the Big East. McDermott is a very good coach.
-
Creighton looked great. Happ looked terrible.
-
What a win by Creighton! Watson reminds me of Dominic James with a shot. He might be the most exciting player to watch in all of college basketball ... oh and Bucky

I believe this is the third time they've played in the last few years. I think they had a home and home in the past.
-
Results have been great so far. I don't like seeing the Big East lose, and the way Georgetown lost was especially frustrating, but if I had to pick a team to lose, I'd pick Georgetown. So I can live with it, especially after Creighton smacked down Bucky.
Things are looking good for the conference so far.

Agree here...nice to see...I'm hoping by this weekend BE is at a 90% win clip (including two more for MU ;) )
Georgetown first loss bursts that minor fantasy of the undefeated BE...we'll be bursting fantasy bubbles soon enough for MU undefeated; MU BE champs; etc... But whats great are the things that aren't fantasy but real possibilities. MU beating ranked teams; MU in NCAA tourney; MU being ranked; MU great season. Not realities. They have work to do...but a real hope.

Northwestern up by 3 at half at Butler. Northwestern is actually a decent team. Butler seems to lack the outside shooting of years past.
-
Butler pulled it out at the end and beat Northwestern 70-68. Good game at Hinkle. Kethan Savage was injured and did not play for Butler.
Big East now 17-1 non conference.

Fran's another one for the moron bucket. Still remember him as the guy back in '08 or '09 where he left MU off his ESPN power rankings ballot at the point in the season where MU was on every other ballot somewhere between #8 and #12. He's one of those "read from the cheat sheet" color guys if you ask me.

They managed to cut the deficit from 23 to 19 at half time ;D
Reminiscent of us against Omaha and NJIT a few years back, only G'town doesn't have the excuse of having no depth, height, or talent, just a crap coach.

Where are they playing that game? That gym looks like it holds about 500 people.

On campus. Kind of like us playing at the Al.
Providence seems to be coming back from a 10 point deficit at the half against Ohio State.

They also have a coach who has been there for 7 years and has his system and all his players in place.
He also went 14-15 in his first season as a head coach and 11-17 in his second season as a head coach. He then went 59-68 at Iowa State and has made the NCAA Tournament once in 3 seasons since joining the Big East, when his son was a senior who would've been 2 years into the NBA had he not been playing for his dad.
But who's counting anyway?

He rallied back after his son graduated . Assembled a new crop of talent and has the program in a very good place and sold out arena every night. He understands how to win. 419 career wins. 6 NCAA tournaments.
Creighton has done a good job of making the most of their Big East Opportunity.

Awesome. In his 14th year as a D1 college head basketball coach he "rallied back" after his son graduated.
He did go 14-19 the year after his son graduated, and then had an NIT season the year after, and hasn't made an NCAA Tournament since. Oh, and hasn't made an NCAA Tournament since Wojo has taken over at Marquette, but again, who's counting?

Creighton did very well last year, when they made the NIT and we will find out if they make the NCAA this year. It is clear they are performing well. I would gladly take their coach and their entire roster in trade for ours.

Really I just can't respond to this kind of crap any more. Greg McDermott is a nice coach. Over the course of time he will get some teams in the NCAAs and maybe win a game. But that's all he really is. He's a mellower Mike Deane.
I'd roll the dice with a younger guy with upside any day of the week. And if that doesn't work out, I would do it again.
-
Georgetown is just Fing weird.
Georgetown had to play the first 4 games without their center who was granted a sixth year, but he sat out the first four games. Why the NCAA does this is fling weird to me. Either give the player a 6th year or do not give him a 6th year.

Hoyas make good on promises to open up the offense winning 105-60 over USC Upstate. Scored 68 points in the half most in school history.
Rodney Pryor scored 32 points going 6/8 from 3pt range Posting an efficiency rating of 179.3 8-)
Hoyas continue to make good on that promise to open up that offense!
Rowsey might be able to grab 15 offensive rebounds against Georgetown this year.
-
With MU Win and Georgetown loss the Big East is now 34-8.
Also looking at the schedule it appears as if the Big East schools have schedule a number of the same opponents. I wonder if a conference directive of sorts came down.

Yeah, the Big East sent out a directive telling Creighton they had to make sure that they matched up with UW in the Gavitt games and Georgetown that they had to beat Oregon to match up with UW in the Maui Invite so that they could make sure to both play the in state rival MU played every year.

MSU starting to pull away from St. Johns with 5 minutes left in game. A very strong MSU team and St. Johns hung with them for a long period of time. Seton Hall in a good one with Florida. Gators up 62-59 with under 7 to play. Hall getting some of their own medicine, blocked frequently in close under the hoop.

I'm trying to figure out Seton halls offense. It seems like they just try to iso and very offensive boards.

Florida Beat Seton Hal 81-76l. Florida was essentially playing at home as game was played in Orlando. Florida had a couple of pogo stick type guys who were very intimidating to the Seton Hall ruffians.

I've never thought Willard was a great coach. He may have found lightning in a bottle with Whitehead last year, and he certainly has the players this year, but how he never managed to get Fuquan Edwin to the tourney, especially when they had Theodore and Pope around him, was just baffling.
Watching them tonight, they kept feeding and attacking the post despite getting blocked repeatedly. They shot okay from outside, but too often they seemed content to attack Egbunu inside instead of kicking out to an open man. They have some truly quality players, but the basketball IQ doesn't seem that high. I think that's pretty characteristic of Kevin Willard teams.

Seton Hall beat Quinnipiac 90-79. I have watched a few Seton Hall games and they don't have a great offensive concept. As others have stated they are kind of a street ball type of team.

He really isn't playing much, so it's hard to say. He had one big game against St. Francis, 16 points, 6 rebounds in 28 minutes, but hasn't had any other games where he played more than 13 minutes or scored more than 2 points. He is playing like a three-star true freshman. Wouldn't call it good, but there's no real shame in that.

Georgetown blowing out Howard early 22-7. Bizarre how they lost to a cupcake (Arkansas State) and beat Oregon. Lots of mid-level cupcakes the rest of the way along with La Salle on a neutral court and Syracuse away. No idea what to really make of the Hoyas yet, other than JTIII seems to have lost it.

Hoyas needed a win
-
Seton Hall has individual talent but they have no offensive concept at all. Very sloppy team. Losing by 11 to Stanford.
I think Seton Hall may be more of a middle tier team in the Big East than an upper tier team.
I think the differential between MU and Seton Hall will be much less this year.
-
Butler's win over AZ (and Vandy :o) puts them at 18.
Creighton at 10, X at 8 and Nova at 2.
Top of conference looking great early.

At this point, all four of those teams are looking like legitimate Final Four contenders. Villanova looks like Villanova. Creighton has some nice wins, a 7-foot freshman playing like a one-and-done, and one of the best starting backcourts in the country. Butler...I'm just more impressed every year by Chris Holtmann. And Xavier is probably the least impressive of the undefeated teams.
The saving grace for us is the bottom of the conference is far less impressive. Georgetown is bad, Seton Hall seems to have reverted to Kevin Willard coaching without Whitehead. DePaul and St John's, still not there yet. If the league gets 5 bids, I like our chances. If we get 6, I love them.
-
Quick guess that BE ends up with an 80% nonconf winning pct.
Right now we're a bit less than 75% eyeballing it.
It's optimistic but I think that's possible. I wonder what the BE nc pcts were previous years. Guess I could figure it out.

The top 4 teams may just beat up on the bottom 6 teams so bad that the league may only get four bids. A team that does not go at least 2-6 against the top 4 is not likely to get a bid and 2-6 might not be good enough. MU went 2-6 last year and was not close to a bid. 3-5 against the top four might be the minimum needed. MU needs to win at home against the top 4.

This isn't how the ncaa tournament works.
It isn't, exactly, but I think there's validity in the point. There are a total of 90 wins in the league. If the top 4 teams average 11-1 against the bottom of the league, they would end up with 56 of those wins (44 against the bottom, 12 against each other).
That leaves only 34 combined league wins for the other 6 teams. If one or two stand out, we could be a six bid league. But if none of those 6 teams wins more than 7 league games (say 7-11, 7-11, 6-12, 6-12, 5-13, 3-15) they likely all get left out. This is why the best thing for the league is to have 6-7 very good teams and 3-4 pretty bad ones. In order to maximize bids, you need teams like DePaul, St. John's, and another one or two to be really bad. If your three worst teams combine for 7-8 wins, it makes it much easier for the top of the league to do enough to get into the Tournament.
Someone has to lose.

I'm good with this. As long as the Warriors aren't one of the "another one or two"!

I would be shocked if a 12-6 Big East team does not make the NCAA tournament.
The challenge is not losing to the bottom five although I would be nearly as shocked if an 11-7 team wth a 2-6 top four/9-1 bottom 10 record doesn't make it.

Running the table against the 5 worst teams and losing all 8 games to the four best teams gets you to 10-8. You better have a very good non conference record.

You would then have 4 wins over Georgetown and Seton Hall (assuming the top 4 are Butler, Xavier, Creighton, and Nova). It's less about who you beat and more about who you play. If you're 10-8 in the BE you're in.

And exactly the reason paying attention to the non con portion of the schedule is important. When and if the BEast finishes #1 at Christmas, then by definition the 60th percentile team in the BEast is 'better' than the 60th percentile team in the Big10, Big12, Pac12, etc. Sure there will be exceptions such as the discussion above with an inbalance of the Top 4 winning essentially every game they play but assuming the comference is normally distributed.....
One of the things that drives me crazy is when some ESPN talking head talks about some league getting 7,8,9 bids. Who the eff cares? If my league had 16 teams in it we'd be there too. Somebody can do the math. Getting 60% of your team to the dance has to be very near the historic top.

I put a big emphasis on the non conference season. Once the non conference is finished, it becomes very difficult to enhance your position. We have a commonality of interest with all the other teams in the league during non conference. Ideally we want everyone to go undefeated. The recent recruiting success of many Big East teams will start to manifest itself in the next couple years.
-
Getting 60% of your team to the dance has to be very near the historic top.
I believe the best ever performance was the Big East in the 1991 NCAA Tournament. The league had 9 teams total and 7 made the NCAA Tournament:
2-Seed: Syracuse
3-Seed: Seton Hall
4-Seed: St. John's
6-Seed: Pittsburgh
8-Seed: Georgetown
9-Seed: Villanova
11-Seed: Connecticut
Providence missed out, but made the NIT and made it to the final eight of that tournament. I'm not sure how seeding was handled, but I believe they were probably pretty close to making the NCAAs. Boston College was the other team left out. That's 77.8% of the league making it in. The Big 12 has come close the past three years, sending 7/10 teams to the tourney each year. Had West Virginia not lost every meaningful non-con game in 2013-14 (5 losses to Va Tech, Wisconsin, Missouri, Gonzaga, and Purdue all by single digits) they probably would have had a good shot at making it 8/10.
EDIT: Interesting note about that 1991 Big East, other than 2-seed Syracuse getting upset by a 15, every other team was eliminated by a team that would go on to the Final Four. North Carolina took out Villanova, Kansas took out Pittsburgh, Duke took out UConn and St. John's, and UNLV took out Georgetown and Seton Hall.

Depaul has a pretty big game against Northwestern coming up. I fully expect Depaul to get thrashed by 20 but if they somehow manage a tin that would do wonders for the Big East RPI. Not a must win because NU is very good this year but would be nice.
-
DePaul and Johnnies race to the bottom. PC and GT a level above but nowhere near .500.
The MU battle will be with Hall for that fifth place position that would get them to the NCAAs. Considering how Hall manhandled us last season, garnering a split will be a monumental task.

Guessing they go anywhere from the 3-3 or 5-1 range. Baylor vs. X and Rhode Island vs Providence are the only two toss up games in my book. Depaul will lose by 15 to NU and the rest of the BE teams should win pretty handily.

Glad I don't bet anymore, not since I nearly got busted, by the good old MPD. The daytime bartender went down, I dodged the bullet. Baylor would have tempted me, oh well, I'm retired.

Providence on an 11-2 run and now lead #21 Rhode Island 51-49 with 7 to play. Friars are kind of frenetic, but when they're blocking shots and running they can be effective.
Xavier lost to Baylor after leading at the half. BU destroyed them in the second to win 76-61.
Villanova and Butler both took care of business.
-
Big win for Providence. Nail biter to the end, but Friars win it 63-60. Kyron Cartwright looks like the next crazy stat PC guard, in the vein of Dunn, Cotton, and Council.

Northwestern (without their starting center) already up by 12 over Depaul only 7 minutes into the game.

Maybe, theyre a very good team but have a very unfavorable B1G schedule. They got stuck with Indiana and Purdue twice with their matchups against Michigan St and Wisconsin both away. Really could have used the wins against Notre Dame and Butler.
Should be a very interesting team when Pardon and Falzon get back. I predicted a couple year ago that when McIntosh and Law are Juniors they will have a good shot to be a NCAA tourney team, hope that turn out right.

Our win yesterday put the Big East back into 2nd in conference RPI. Big East also second in strength of schedule
http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_bige_Men.html
The Big East needs MU, Providence, Seton Hall and Georgetown to finish out this non conference season strong.
It looks like Providence has a shot at winning all of theirs. Georgetown still has Syracuse and U Conn, although a win amongst those would help. Seton Hall has to play South Carolina, so a win against them would be helpful.
It would also be good for St. Johns and DePaul to Pad their resumes too, so when they have an occasional upset conference win it becomes less of a bad loss for the rest of the conference. I thought the Johnnies would be improved but based on their performance to date they are still a year away.

Just looked at St. John's season to date. Woof. How bad is that Delaware State loss? It's DSU's only D-1 win of the season, to go along with some big losses to bad competition. Bad bad bad.

Last I checked Delaware State was ranked 340 in KenPom. I don't have the data but I'd be willing to bet that they were the lowest ranked team (per KenPom) to ever beat a Big East squad.
-
That Delaware State loss was a doozy. Mullin is getting talent, but I'm not convinced at all by his coaching. I know people complain about Wojo, but as far as a game coach he's light years ahead of Mullin right now. I'd love it if them and DePaul combined for 2 Big East wins (each other). If everyone else had 4 wins to start with, that improves the odds of getting 6-8 teams in the NCAAs.
-
And as crazy as 8 might seem, I could see...
1) Villanova 27-4 (14-4)
2) Creighton 25-6 (12-6)
3) Butler 23-7 (11-7)
4) Marquette 21-9 (11-7)
5) Xavier 22-9 (10-8)
6) Seton Hall 20-10 (10-8)
7) Georgetown 19-12 (10-8)
8) Providence 21-10 (10-8)
9) DePaul 10-20 (1-17)
10) St. John's 8-23 (1-17)
If you have two terrible teams and a glut of teams in the middle, it's not impossible. In this scenario, Georgetown might need help, and it would take a strong finish to non-con play, but 8 teams wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. The Big 12 came very close in 2014 (7 in, WVU probably would have been had they won 2 of the 5 non-con games they lost by single digits).

This is not a bag on our schedule at all because having a true road game at a "power 5" school is a great move (#exceptRutgers), but did i hear correctly during the Georgia game that so far, other than Kentucky, the SEC only has 2 'quality' wins this year and both are from South Carolina?
I'm too lazy to do the research but assuming true......THAT is a bad conference - both in scheduling and in quality.

Florida beat St. Bonaventure's, Seton Hall, and Miami (FL). St. B's is arguable but the other two are solid.
Arkansas beat UT-Arlington, usually not a good win but this year they will be a top 75 team.
Ole Miss beat UMass, St. Joe's, and Memphis. Depends on your definition of good win.
LSU beat Houston. Maybe a good win?
TAMU beat Buzz' Hokies. That's one good one.
Georgia beat George Washington...meh
Mizzou almost beat Xavier. Does that count?
Tennessee beat Georgia Tech. Power Six conference but not great.
So the statement wasn't correct, but the SEC outside of Kentucky and Florida is pretty abysmal.

Agreed, is Mullin OK? The one sideline TV shot of all the players talking to each other throughout the time out while Mullin starred at his stat sheet was scary. The TV commentator tried to write it off as a good strategy to sometimes let players talk it out during a game.

Local Media is starting to turn on Mullin a bit this year. Big East needs St. Johns to be a competitive team.
Seriously...why? The two biggest market teams right now, DePaul and St. John's, are also the two worst teams. Has that prevented the league from getting teams ranked? No, we've had four different teams ranked this year. Has that prevented the league from getting teams into the tournament? No, we've averaged five NCAA teams per season. Has that prevented the league from television contracts, a marquee tournament venue, top-level recruiting, quality non-conference scheduling, or elite RPI/SOS numbers? No, no, no, no, and no.
The Big East needs teams to be competitive and playing elite basketball. It has that. Maybe Omaha and Indianapolis aren't Chicago and New York, but as long as the teams are competitive with the top leagues and winning at a high level, we'll be fine. The league needs good teams and needs someone to be at the bottom. It has that, which is why it's flourishing.
-
Seriously...why? The two biggest market teams right now, DePaul and St. John's, are also the two worst teams. Has that prevented the league from getting teams ranked? No, we've had four different teams ranked this year. Has that prevented the league from getting teams into the tournament? No, we've averaged five NCAA teams per season. Has that prevented the league from television contracts, a marquee tournament venue, top-level recruiting, quality non-conference scheduling, or elite RPI/SOS numbers? No, no, no, no, and no.

Exactly.
Anyway, Mullin doesn't seem terribly interested IMO. I believe he had to be offered the job more than once and didn't really want to leave the west coast.

Man, that the message I got from his body language during last year's TV huddle time outs, he seemed just not fully involved.
Maybe it was because of the contrast of Wojo's huddles as it was happening in the same game.
-
Big East needs St. Johns to be a competitive team.
Boy, is the Big East unnatural carnal knowledgeed.

Instead of saying needs i should have said Big East would benefit etc. I am very much in agreement with what you have laid out above.

I'll be honest, I think that 8 good teams and 2 stinkers is ideal. I really don't care which are which, as long as Marquette isn't one of the latter two.

Yep
-
Disappointing for X, but not a "bad loss" Colorado was already a borderline tourney team, cross country travel for X, and still missing one of their glue guys in Myles Davis (there's a stalker joke to be made here). Still, they should have the highest aspirations in the conference short of Nova.
Butler...not not good. Caught whatever Indiana had from their in-state road loss to scrubs.

It's because he's not the coach who calls the plays.

Well, that nice, one less thing that many other coaches do. Anything else?

With St John's win over Fordham, tonight, the Big East moves to 25-4 vs the A-10 since 2014's conference realignments.

Ha ha. Makes his post seem even more comical.
Heard radio guy the other day say that Big East is 12-10 versus the ACC last season and current season (includes post season). Not bad given that they took some of the top teams.
-
St. John's starting center, Sima, just left the team and will transfer.

Two big games in the Legs family - Legs Jr. at ND and Ms. Legs at Nova; Mrs. Legs brother a Vadger grad. Let's set the tone for the holidays with a couple of BE wins.
-
ND sucks.
-
That took 7 minutes longer than I expected. 8-)
-
Villanova losing at half to ND 41-36. Nova defense not intense enough today.
-
Just turned the TV on and that appears to be a new, extra ugly shade of green on ND uniforms. Or my TV needs repair. Or I need to see an ophthalmologist.
-
Ugly, but not as bad as the mustard green ones.
I hate Vastoria so much.
-
ND working hard and wants this game much more than Villanova.
-
Nova scratched their way back into the lead 57-56 with 7:51 left. Josh Hart on fire with 31 points so far.
-

For Nova, it seems like only one person has their head and Hart in this game.
-
Nova up by 6 with 27 second left
-
Nova won 74-66 Hart with 37 and 11
-
Providence Beat U Mass
Temple beat Depaul 74-65
-
Butler and Cincinnati tied at half
-
Butler beat Cincinnati. Good Game for Butler .
Xavier up 40-32 over Utah 19 minutes second half
-
Xavier Beat Utah
Georgetown beat LaSalle
-
South Carolina undefeated no more. Seton Hall took them down at the Garden. Good game for the Hall, rallying from an 7-point halftime deficit. Angel Delgado is still a load. Gamecocks had a three-quarter court shot to tie at the buzzer, but it bounced in and out.
-
Sanago and Delgado with 12 rebounds apiece, they are very, very strong bodies.
On another note, Issac Copeland, Georgetown forward just left and is transferring. Former five star......
Whoops, didn't see other thread on him..
-
Not BEast but Michigan played and beat Central Arkansas where Markus Howard's brother Jordan plays. He had 14 points
-
DePaul losing to UIC finally bursts my bubble of a BE 80% winning pct. OOC
I think BE teams have to win every game left to go over 80% non-conference.
it doesn't matter but was a nice thought. I think the ACC, even with as many teams as they have will go over 80%.
I know many here think the BE is the best...we may prove it in the tourney...but I think the ACC is better top-2-bottom as they say.
-
Big opportunities for the conference today (Saturday, December 17th):
Georgetown @ Syracuse
Butler @ Indiana
Wake Forest @ Xavier
Chicago State @ DePaul

You kid but Chicago State may beat them. They gave Northwestern a run for their money the other day.

And barely lost at SLU. Not sure if DePaul is better than the Bills this year.

Wouldn't be at all shocked if they lost, but it's too sad a state of affairs to take seriously.
-
Clutch win for GTown at Syracuse
-
GT just won over SYR....kept their composure....wont be easy next week.
Good to see BE win though.
-
Syracuse isn't very good.
Wins: Colgate, Holy Cross, Monmouth, South Carolina State, North Florida, Boston U.
Crushed by South Carolina and UW. Close losses to UConn and Georgetown.
-
DePaul 24 Chicago State 4
-
DePaul 24 Chicago State 4
However low scoring, a win is a win.
-
Big game today and plan to watch is Butler/Indiana...Quality Indiana matchup. Also Xavier v Wake Forest. If we can with these two...will be a nice day for the BE.
Want to win these ACC B10 matchups for conference creds. ACC tough this year.
-
However low scoring, a win is a win.
Classic

Road wins over power 5 teams are road wins, especially in front of 20K plus.
-
A thought GTown played a solid game today.
-
Not our conference, but Purdue beats ND. ND $$$$ucks!! Yo, Chili!!
-
Butler +1
Big day for big east...
-
Big East RPI helped, added bonus of IU going down. Win win.
-
Norlander said Butler is a 2 seed now
-
Creighton struggling with 2-9 Oral Roberts, trailing 65-60 at home with 5 to play.
-
There's Villanova and then there's about 8 BE teams that can all beat up on each other. Some nights Xavier looks solid and some they look horrible. Some nights Creighton looks like a top 5 teams and others like an NIT team. Some nights Seton Hall looks like a team building on an NCAA Tournament team and some nights they look like a standard Willard team. Etc.
Every night is going to be a battle.
-
Big East sweep today.
-
There's Villanova and then there's about 5 BE teams that can all beat up on each other and then theres the basement.
Fixed.
-
Fixed.
Probably true. But I think teams like Marquette, Georgetown, Seton Hall, and maybe even Providence all have the ability to beat teams like Creighton, Butler, and Xavier if they catch them on the right night (aka are playing well and those teams are playing poorly). St. John's and DePaul not so much.
-

Creighton wom 66-65
-
.....if they catch them on the right night....
Totally agree with this...even if our record isn't stellar going into Feb. still in the hunt. Reason to get down to the BC on those cold nights. Potentially a good year.
-
On the short end of a 35-5 run in the last 9 minutes of the first half and no timeouts used. I think it's safe to say the Mullin experiment has not worked out for St. John's.

Mullin doesn't coach the team.

I don't think you can say that its failed yet. Rebuilds take time. But I will agree that the signs don't look good.
-
9 days to Real BE play and two 300+ opponents till then...what do we do with the time?
Why of course we play meaningless mental statistical games...mine is "can the Big East finish with 80%+ NONCONF winning pct."
* Currently 84-25 (qualifying games)
* 13 games left before BE play (as of the beginning of today 12/19)
* 4 games during BE play.
126 total nonconf games. 80% = 100.8 wins => 101 wins.
so we have to win every one left. Can STJ bean Syracuse? All the rest we should be competitive.
We shall see...
-
Just to note: some nice Non-Conference games during Big East play:
1/14 - Georgetown/UConn
1/26 - Xavier/Cincinnati
1/29 - Villanova/Virginia - Battle for the letter "V"
and of course that classic:
1/14 Creighton/Truman State
-
Big East had a decent night last night...
Creighton won at Zona State by 11 (given their average defense and great offense, our games with them could see winner scoring 100+)
Xavier dispatched Eastern Wash by 30
Providence took care of Maine (by 20)
Sagarin has Big East ranked third and RPI has us at first
-
Still 16 to play, but the Johnnies are up 13 at Syracuse in the second half.
-
DePaul absolutely sucks. Down 10 to Wyoming with 9 minutes to go.

72-58. God awful.

Here we go 8-)
-
Are you sure that he will be able to rise to the occasion?
Hearing he is at least 12 clicks above the DePaul high water mark.
-
To be fair, I believe DePaul opened at +4.5. Spread came down to +2.5, so bettors were on the Big East team, but Wyoming was always the favorite.
EDIT: Eli Cain 2/16 from the field with 4 turnovers. He should fit right in as that next DePaul go-to guy.

Watching SH vs Rutgers, officiating is ridiculous. Lots of flopping by SH players, Rutgers is a good team, led most of game but officiating turned the table. SMH

Bad night for the league, going 1-2 against marginal competition.

I watched a lot of that game and SHU played awful.
Hopefully that's the SHU that shows up vs us
