A little persepctive
« on: February 12, 2009, 11:22:13 PM »
Since MU lost to SFU, #14 Xavier got spanked by Dayton @ Dayton, #7 Louisville got destroyed by ND @ South Bend. All it means is that on the road in conference play anything can happen even to top teams. Don't panic. We are coming home for two games to get straightened out before the big 5 game push. MU will be fine.

I do like the perspective, but Notre Dame, Dayton and USF.  One of these doesn't belong, try to guess which one.  We'll be fine, but the truth is that was a very bad loss.

USF was a bad loss but not a very bad loss. We allowed ourselves wiggle room in losing a game like that. We cannot afford to lose again to a team we should beat. Every team slips up on the road over a long season. Now we need to win the games we are supposed to win and then steal one we are underdogs in.

Yes, it was a bad loss.
But I'd much rather lose by a point at USF - after missing two easy shots to win at the end - than lose by 30+ at Notre Dame.
Imagine the histrionics around here.

For me, the USF loss is disappointing because we failed to take advantage of the opportunity to win a game we should have won.

In this league, you gotta' win the ones you are supposed to win.

The resulting drop in the ESPN power ratings from # 5 to # 12 is reflective of our inability to put away USF more than it reflects the loss to 'Nova.

That said, what do these ratings mean, especially with so many games to go?  The only important one is where we get seeded for the big dance.

So, let's shake it off and kill SJU.

I'd settle for destroying them.  Killing them seems a little harsh.

Also on the USF point, kenpom has their RPI at 120 right now. So by definition, if the committee were meeting today, this would be a "bad loss" correct? That said, if USF could find a way to squeak a couple wins out of the rest of their schedule (ND, Gtown, UConn, SH, WV, Cincy and Rutgers), they could theoretically drop below that 100 threshold and then not be considered so bad.

Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part, but it was worth a try.... sorry.. still very new to all the various metrics used in March....

I guess Dayton.

USF (3-8) and ND (4-7) are both also-rans in the Big East.

Dayton is a likely NCAA team.
