Yeah, they just said he took a public bus to work everyday.  Like I said and hope, that this Pope will bring some reform,etc, then comes a young, vibrant guy.

Largest population of Catholics reside in South America today.    Good nod to that population but I agree seems like a compromise candidate who will serve a short term until they can develop more of a consensus.

There are many Cardinals out there in same predicament, many.....  

I believe this is a "bridge" Pope selection with his first being from outside traditional Europe, first named Pope Francis and spending his entire priest career in Argentina.  The next Pope should be younger.

Have to admit, like his backstory.  Gave up the Cardinal residency, the Cardinal car/driver thing and just had an apartment.  Said he didn't need all that stuff.  Oh boy, is he in for a change.  

Agree with all this.  And hope that Dolan is on the other side of the bridge.

76, so the cardinals are not expecting a 25 year papacy.   Traditional on Catholic teaching, huge on commitment to the poor, the sick, the downtrodden.   Humble.    Asked the crowd in the square to pray for him.  Former chemistry teacher.   I predict it will be his job to come in and clean house for the next pope.

Pretty sure Dolan was brought in after the sex scandal broke. Weakland was the guy who let it all go down.

You are correct--the problem Cardinal Dolan had was with the clean-up and allegations related to the improper transfer of archdiocese funds to cemetery funds and the like--I think he'll be fine on this score, though (he had his deposition taken recently).  

I think he is an amazing man.  Listen to Conversations with the Cardinal on the Catholic Channel (sirius XM) -- he is real, and has wonderful empathy with people who feel pushed away from the Church.  On a personal note, my roommate from MU is close with him, and when my roommate's mother passed away two years ago, then archbishop of NY Dolan took time out of his schedule to fly to the midwest to say the funeral mass.

What Would Francis of Assisi Do?

The papacy actually doesn't have THAT much liquid wealth (ok it has a lot, but for a sovereign nation, not really). Most of it is tied up in its real estate, art, museums, etc. etc. They can't sell that. And they are pretty good about letting people see/experience it...the Vatican Museums are quite amazing and open to the public.

I agree with you in concept though. There's no need to be living extravagantly and parading around in Prada shoes.

I think that part of the allure of a short-tenured pope is the "freedom" to be a reformer without having to spend a 20+ year papacy working with people you may have just upset.
