Maybe Chicos can answer this.
Do the networks have a supervisor review each game for the performance of a broadcaster?
Patrick has on at least two occasions called the name of a NOVA player making an MU basket. Never seen that before.
He also has screwed up with possesions and just called Derrick Wilson, Trevor Wilson.
Just terrible.

Cad O gan
-
Yeah he loves saying Ca-doh-gan
-
Maybe he's s h I t faced?
-
He's either drunk or just completely stupid.
-
Old geezer problems.
-
He's poppin' Viagra and wearin' Depends?
-
This sounds like the start of a muscoop email campaign.
-
He just said Cadougan made the pass for NOVA, then said Hillard, then Cherault.
Honestly, he must be drunk. and tommorow should be removed.
-
Nova's number 5 with a good pass and he is saying JC.
-
I try not to complain about announcing but this is awful.
Elmore forgot Marquette's name in the first half.
Patrick has repeatedly credited players for the wrong team with assists.
I've never liked Elmore and Patrick but I don't know that they even care about this game.

EP's in the studio are watching. Patrick is a vet but his call today is amateur hour.
-
The ten minutes they spent talking to Lunardi was brutal. Elmore just throwing out random hypothetical game outcomes so Lunardi could guess where he'd change his brackets. They didn't even pretend to act like there was a game going on in front of them. I'm so sick of Joe Lunardi.
-
I like Patrick normally but he must have been juiced up today. Simply terrible across the board.
-
ESPN has given us terrible calls all year. It never used to be this bad, now it's every game between old geezers who are either too lazy or too senile, or amateurs who obviously don't do their homework and not retaining the good ones like Mike Kelley. Will gladly take my chances with Fox.

Brought back memories of the great Curt Gowdy on NBC decades ago. Lloyd Walton was often Larry Walton. Bernard Toone was Tone :)

Yeah, but at least he had them on the right team.

True. These clowns out did themselves today.

And he kept plugging the special program on NBC following MU vs UNC in 1977 as "All The Fighter." The correct title was "Ali The Fighter."

Old geezer problems.
As an old geezer I resent that. Most old geezers who suck, sucked when they were young geezers.

I actually liked his calls on Sunday Night Football 10 or 15 years ago. Seems he and his mind have aged 30 years since then.

Yea but, C'mon, Curt Gowdy was The American Sportsman!
-
I'm glad to see that it wasn't just me. Patrick was awful.
-
Didn't you go high school with Patrick?
-
I thought Elmore was ok, but Patrick was out of his damn fool mind tonight.

I'm not on the production side anymore, it's been years. He was not good, but I was at my son's tournament and watching via sling box so I couldn't really hear all the stuff going on. I did hear him say CaD - a-gain or something like that. And Trevor Wilson was another one.
One question I had was whether he was supposed to even do this game and whether he was a last minute replacement...hopefully that was the case. If he was the scheduled guy then he did not have a good performance.
-
Mike Patrick is a drinking game ready to happen. Every time he mispronounces a players name, drink. Every time he credits the wrong player, drink. We'd all be passed out by halftime.
-

Apparently you've never watched an NFL game on CBS.
-
Well, we could pretend he wasn't senile but just being witty when he credited Ca-d'oh!-gan with an assist on a Villanova basket.
-
Patrick was awful. At least 4 times he credited baskets to players on the opposing team, messed up pass calls repeatedly, and I believe dubbed Trent Lockett "Trevor Wilson" as CBB noted. Maybe the worst announced game I've ever heard on a major network.
-
I just want the simple facts, like old Ray Scott: "Starr..... Dowler..... Touchdown."
Is that asking too much?

To be fair, he dubbed Derrick Wilson, "Trevor Wilson", not Trent Lockett. Can't say I blame him, I too was thrown for a loop when D Wilson actually scored a field goal.

I really thought he was talking about Trent...but that only further emphasizes why he shouldn't be working. If fans don't know who you are talking about, you aren't doing your job.
-
Beth Mowins is better good now. :D
-
My favorite point was when Patrick got all upset when the Villanova guy slid on the floor, Mayo trips over him, and they called the foul (correctly) on the Nova guy. Elmore repeatedly said the call was correct. I mean, at one point Patrick said that the Nova guy "established position." I guess you can now establish position by sitting on your ass. Elmore corrected him again.

Apparently it is.
Ray Scott was heaven. The voice, the authority and, well, the simplicity.
-
Didn't you go high school with Patrick?
In fact, I did. He was the study hall monitor who kept calling me Ciecielski.

Anytime you're so bad as to make Len Elmore do something good, you have really reached a new level of failure.
Of all the people who do national games, I think Len Elmore is consistently the worst.
-

With the similarity of names on MU, and it is only going to get worse in the coming years, I can't blame him abut the Trevor Wilson call either. Mispronouncing names that badly is a different story.
-
I'm glad that two other MU grads and I watched the game at an establishment where the audio was not on.
Not only did we get to drown our sorrows but we didn't have to listen to this. At home, I might have thrown something at my TV!

It was bad to the point where you could hear the embarrassment in Elmores voice every time he had to correct him. I don't necesarrily dislike Mike Patrick, but he was either drunk, had no prep time or is getting too old.

This was the saddest part. He made up his mind that the call was wrong, when Elmore began to correct him he wouldn't have it and just started making stuff up. Took about a minute for Elmore to get him to shut up long enough to be able to explain the rule.
Best thing about being on Big Monday, we get the few capable announcers ESPN has left. If we win the tip, Syracuse's zone will suddenly manage to have a little "mantoman" in it. :D

Mispronouncing names happens. Too much w/Patrick, but it happens and it's annoying.
That being said, I get more ticked when announcers don’t know the rules…like Jimmy Mc calling the MU game on Saturday. He was whining on and on about how the clock wasn’t stopping after a bucket in the second half and moronic Homer didn’t correct him either. JM – Doesn’t the clock stop? Homer – I think so. JM – Well, not here!
Shut up JM! Know the rules! The clock doesn’t stop after a bucket unless it’s inside a minute. And even after you Googled the answer, you still didn’t take it back and say you were wrong.
-
Never criticized announcers before but that pair Saturday were bad.
-
The announcers Saturday were down right disrespectful if you ask me. I am getting pretty sick and fricken tired of announcers not knowing how to pronounce the names of guys on our team. It is starting to get to the point where I think it is now bigger than a small mispronounciation and now it is disrespect.

Disrespect, no. It is a matter that Mike Patrick is just too old to do the job anymore. And, this is a running theme for networks, see Fox and Dick Stockton. For some reason, the networks think it is more important to have a named broadcaster do the game, then a younger competent guy.
-
Might change when the minimum wage is raised.
-
I have never commented on announcers. That was the worst bit of annoucing from both that I can remember. That was a joke and completely distracting.
:-\

On this note, I still can't stand that CBS uses Jim Nantz for its biggest games (both football and basketball). He has been around for a while, and is very technically sound, but he is so damn boring and has a serious monotone. I do very much enjoy listening to him cover golf, but thats about it. Listening him call more exciting sports, especially the NCAA tournament, is just less exciting than anyone else.
Their decision to not rehire Gus Johnson was a terrible one, most exciting play-by-play announcer out there hands down.

The decisions networks make when it comes to broadcasters simply astound me.
Totally agree on Gus Johnson, should have been the voice of the Final Four. Would have given CBS a signature voice to end the tournament. Instead, you get Nantz, who does the Masters later in the week anyway.

I think the problem with Gus is that his schtick annoys more people than Nantz's style does.

True, Johnson is not for everyone. I like the excitement, but he's definitely on the extremely end.
I just think both Fox and CBS relied way too much on Nantz and Joe Buck.
-
Agree on Gus Johnson. I watched the MU-Syracuse NCAA tournament game from two years back yesterday morning to get the Villanova taste out of my mouth and to get pumped for tonight, and it doesn't get better than Johnson's "DEE-JAY-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" call on the game winning three pointer.
-
People that like Nantz are the same schleps who loved Billy Packer over the years. Translation - older viewers.
And Nantz and Packer both blow. Nantz is fine w/the Masters. That's right in his wheelhouse of hanging out w/the Bush's and the Couples' family at a prestigious club surrounded by everyone that's just like him. But for anything that requires a pulse, he's terrible.
-
Whaddya mean DarkWarrior; 25% of your posts are bytching about announcers!
Let's go Warriors tonight!!
-
What MU Team will show up tonite? We need "A" Game tonight.
-
Earl Tatum
That is million dollar question. My head says it will not be pretty and my gut says Buzz will have them ready. Nothing will shock me or disappoint me though.

Nantz's is a terrific golf announcer, that's his passion. He was a collegiate golfer. Funny you mention Fred Couples, as Nantz and Couples were college roommates at the University of Houston.

Mike Patrick and Len Elmore will be doing the ND-MU game this Saturday.
-
Then somebody needs a separate thread on mis-pronunciations and flat out mis-identifying players, much like the PREDICTIONS thread.
