Title: Recruiting class of 2020
Post by: Marcus92 on July 28, 2018, 02:38:54 PM
With Chartouny graduating next spring, it seems clear that our focus for the class of 2019 is finding a backup point guard for McEwen during the 2019-20 season. Maybe that's Elliott, maybe not.

But the big challenge is the 2020 class, when we'll have to replace four likely starters: our current leading scorer (Markus Howard), one of our best defenders (Sacar Anim), our best rebounder and inside player (Ed Morrow) and a potential all-Big East forward (Sam Hauser).

Hopefully, the other returning players are ready to step up at that point. Joey and McEwen look like good bets. Cain and Elliott have flashed tantalizing potential. (Cain could be starting over Sacar at that point.) The hope is that between Theo, Ike and Bailey, at least one or two will develop into Big East level starting front court players or strong rotation players. Then again, history suggests we'll lose one or more to transfers. And you never know about injuries.

So who are the studs that take over when Sam and Markus leave? Is anyone standing out as our best 2020 prospects?

We have offered a ton of guys in 2020.......too soon to know who we have a realistic shot at getting and who the staff prefers.

Clearly they would love to get Johnson from Sun Prairie but so does everyone else in the country.

2020 is obviously going to be an important class but it's too soon to be thinking about it seriously as a fan.

It will come into focus next spring/summer. Will be very surprised if we get an early verbal.

Fair enough. But with Sam, for instance, we did know well in advance that he was going to be a recruiting focus. A few things stand out to me about recent recruiting classes:

1) We've had our best luck recruiting our backyard: Luke Fischer, Duane Wilson, Henry Ellenson, Matt Heldt and Sam Hauser from Wisconsin (including 3 winners of the state Mr. Basketball award); Sacar and Theo from Minneapolis; Ed Morrow originally from Chicago; Greg, Ike and Jamal from Detroit.

2) Wojo and the staff look for shooters: Sam, Markus, Andrew, etc.

3) Beyond that, we know the staff looks for an ideal combination of size, athleticism and all-around skills.

Of the nearly 20 players from the class of 2020 that we've offered, which ones stand out with those criteria in mind? Particularly the best players in Wisconsin and the surrounding states. Are we really targeting them all equally?

Just a reminder......we didn't get Luke.....we lost him to IU and then got him as a transfer.

I'm sure the staff has priorities in that class but it's not clear who they are yet....other then Jalen Johnson.

I think the reason it was obvious that Sam was a priority is that it was a weak in state class and it was known that he might want to stay close to home.

other than the point guards, the game has changed to big guys who can run the floor and shoot.  the taller the point guard, say 6'2" to 6'6" the better, but he's obviously got to be able to handle the ball and have good court vision.  the rest of the team 6'6"-7'0" need to be able to defend(duh?) and run the floor.  then of course fill the shooting nitch/role.  supply and demand.  look what kerr has done to GS.  run and shoot-often.  then ya have your bangers

I never play Thread Police, but I'm wondering why we needed a separate thread for 2020 recruits when we have a perfectly good, active Recruiting thread.

Not advocating that it be shut down or anything, but curious why.
