Hearing Marquette got smacked around pretty good today. Score ended up being closer than it felt.
Oh well.

Addition by subtraction for Michigan.
Got significantly better without Hunter Dickinson, Juwan, and Jett Howard.
Feels like they have some good karma coming their way.
-
Good. It will make the team more easily coached.

Marquette is reading their press clippings. Going to be a disappointing year for a lot of people.

Hope so. Lot of bad vibes right now.

I actually agree, assuming what I heard is correct.
A little wakeup call before the games actually count.

Michigan is bad. Not a good result at all. As deep as the Big East is, a top half finish isn’t guaranteed

Michigan is definitely not bad.
They added Nkamhoua, Jackson, and Burnett. They'll be a pesky team. There are a few people on Twitter saying that Marquette played really light minutes to their starters. I can't confirm that, but wouldn't be surprised. Michigan definitely has the size advantage though.

Last year they were picked 9th, this year 1st. I think Michigan State exposed Marquette in the tournament and a lot of people ignored that.

Exposed? Marquette was tied with Michigan State with like 3 minutes left in the game.

And that was with Kolek playing with one hand.

Funny how there are some people that truly believe that teams in scrimmages allocate minutes the exact same way as in an actual game…

Really distressing news. Thank goodness we don’t play Radford and Georgia Tech in November.

115 to 111 ?
That in and of itself is ridiculous?
Was it a “ defense free “ scrimmage?

Lol. Let the overreactions in here commence

Al McGuire never lost to Michigan
In fact he did, at least once. In the final game of the 1977 regular season.

That Michigan team was rated number 1 for much of the season, and lost in the regional final to UNCC which, of course, went on to play MU in the Final Four.

National runner-up the year before to perhaps the greatest NCAA team.

Going to hurt our seeding.

I imagine Shaka's seat is getting pretty warm.

This is Beasley the worst scrimmage news in years.

Won't stop us from being ranked #1 after Maui.

I want that matchup with Kansas. We owe them a beating after the last few times we've played them.

Yep.

National runner-up the year before to perhaps the greatest NCAA team.
The 76 Michigan team came the closest of anyone to knock off that Indiana team.
In Bloomington they had a 2 point lead with under 10 seconds left and Steve Grote missed a FT. IU got the rebound, came down to score to tie the game, and went on to win in OT.
In the NCAA Final they led at halftime but got blown out in the second half.

They played 4 12 minute quarters. For comparison that would be a 95.8-92.5 result in a 40 minute game. Still very high scoring but not as crazy.
I also wouldn't put much stock in the score. Secret scrimmages are often not true scrimmages and have additional conditons or rules to work on specific things

Yep, first and foremost, these are practice sessions withe conditions you mention along with getting everyone some PT. No way for all of us to judge realistically 3rd or 4th hand.
-
Is this your schtick or are you actually throwing in the towel off a scrimmage?
That's his schtick. Contrarian. Get used to it. We will be seeing it all season.
-
Sounds like there was a better chance that Connor Stallions was at the scrimmage than defense actually played.
Not worried. I heard that the starters didn't play more than 10-15 minutes and Shaka was testing out lineups with freshman and sophomores.
Remember, Illinois beat Kansas in a scrimmage last year. I put zero stock in a "secret" scrimmage. I bet you Shaka is using this as a teaching tool anyway.

Everyone needs to settle down. Now, it is true that being the hunted and our early schedule will be a significant challenge. In the end, assuming we are healthy, we will be just fine.

I guess these scrimmages are not so secret. Obviously no one played defense. I am a firm believer that winning is contagious, but we learn from our losses. I hope we learned our lesson.
-
The four minute format is interesting. Seems to be focused on situational basketball, having players find their roles. While MU has a lot of returning minutes, the freshmen and returning bench players have new roles to play. Sounds like MU was playing from behind most of the scrimmage (road game like). Learning experience.

I think you really nailed it with the highlighted points.

Living through the Wojo era will do that to you.

More reason not to care about a scrimmage:
Cam Hildreth explodes for 38 points as Wake Forest beats Alabama 88-80 in a charity exhibition. Gonzaga transfer Hunter Sallis had 27.

I think that there are plenty of things to criticize Wojo for, but I think blaming him for Scoopers' naivete and inability to spot an obvious troll is a little much.
Everyone knows that's Crean's fault.

4 twelve minute quarters…….I didn’t read that as a bunch of “4 minute formats “

Final from Queens → St. John's 59 | Pace 63

The Johnnie's are doomed.
Clearly not the Pace at which they want to play.
-
If you are a good and experienced team with established starters, you do not need to play them in an October scrimmage.
So, this game should have featured a big helping of bench players and new freshmen.
(if not this scrimmage .. then when do you play them?)

Soriano and Dingle didn't play. Still a bad result, but just adding context.

I read or heard they were playing in four minute increments (thus 12 minute quarters). Don't remember where now but that is a Shaka game focus. Why these scrimmages are so secret was always weird to me especially now that some are played in front of fans.
The NCAA is interesting. Cream cheese with your bagel?

There is a 0% chance marquette is 2-3 after Maui.
Because we are scheduled to play 6 games by then.
We could easily be 3-3. But all three loses would have been against top 20 teams. So whatever.

One scrimmage does not make a year so let's not over react.
What concerns me is the lack of strength up front. That continues to be our weakness which has not been addressed. Obviously we have great guards and a gifted ball handler at center but the lack of a power forward is a real problem. Help me understand how we work around that issue and I will feel much better.

We'll work around it the same way we did last year, and this time with more experienced players. Last year's work around went pretty well overall, wouldn't you say?
-
MU has more returning minutes than any team I can remember. And the three sophomores could make the same leap that the sophomores made last year. Trust the development. Every team is different, every season is different. Barring injuries, this should be fun.

"every season is different" is what worries me. Up until the Michigan State game most things broke in our favor. These things tend to even out. I do believe we have a better team this year, but things may not break in our favor as much as they did last year.
Slim margins. How much different would your outlook be for this year, if we lost to St. John's in first game of Big East tournament last year?
-
The same. It was a great season. The titles validate it, sure. But if SJU had beaten MU in the garden, it would have been a slightly less great season, but a great season, nonetheless.

In terms of minutes, 2008-09 comes to mind, and we were in position for a Big East title and 1-seed before DJ's injury.

The question was if we lost that game, would your expectations for this year be different than they are now?
-
No. Different season. And I have no expectatuons for this season other than it should be fun.
This is a really good team playing a really tough schedule. Sit back, relax, enjoy the adventure.

07-08 comes even more to mind, as the 06-07 team had no seniors getting significant minutes at all, whereas 08-09 lost Ousmane Barro and Dan Fitzgerald from the previous years squad, and both of those guys played way more minutes than Jamil Lott did.

Correct. Returning mins is one thing… mins continuity, 07-08 was over 80%
Although I think we beat that this year rather easily

Turns out Michigan might be good this year, they look to have an elite offense.
(Olivier Nkamhoua is very good)
Whether it is because they lost Juwan, His Son, or Hunter Dickinson.
They beat UNC Ashville last night 99-74.
But in the first half with more starters minutes, Michigan won 48-32. Michigan had 1.42 PPP, the First half was only 34 possessions.
-
I wanted Marquette to drop the bag for either (or both) of Nkamhoua or Burnett. Both looked good. I like their lineup. Those two plus McDaniel are a nice group, and they have some big dudes down low.
I'm still interested to know how much Kolek, Oso, Stevie, and Kam played in the scrimmage.

Shaka can’t beat Big Ten teams

Associate Michigan Head Coach Phil Martelli:
"Just suppose we had a secret scrimmage in Milwaukee (No. 5 Marquette) and just suppose the score reported (115-111) was the score we won by in 48 minutes. And just suppose, in 48 minutes, we only trailed twice"
"We haven't gotten blood in our mouth yet"
Michigan and others seem to be getting an awful lot of mileage out of this "secret" scrimmage "victory." Rick Pitino also mentions it here: https://twitter.com/John_Fanta/status/1722095068482351116
I hope Shaka and MU are seeing this kind of stuff.
