Downtown Milwaukee Restaurant Suggestions
« on: January 11, 2011, 08:21:34 AM »
I'm a rad coming into town for the Syracuse game.  It's been awhile since I've been in town and I wanted to get some suggestions on a restaurant for Saturday night.  Plus, any updates on the bars (other than the staples) that should be hit.

Thanks and

Reasonable but great food - Miss Katies
Medium - Karl Ratzsch's
Expensive - Capitol Grill

Just one Carnivore's opinion.

In the expensive category, I would replace Capitol Grill with Hinterland for something unique (non-chain).  Great beers brewed at their Green Bay location...menu changes daily, but it's always good (chef was nominated for James Beard award this year).  When we have people in from out of town, they always like it as a unique alternative to the normal NY restaurant scene for them.

Reasonable but great food - Miss Katies

Chren... I dont mean to pick on you but, "reasonable but great food"? Its a diner. Am I missing something? Did Miss katies raise their prices to a level that would earn them the reasonably priced title?

Reasonable but great food - Denny's.

No.  It's fantastic food for cheap.  Is that better?  Like I said just my opinion.  I love the place.

yes that is better. reasonable makes me think of $$ and miss katies is $. Just dont want to steer Warrior Forever away.

I havent eaten there since I read an inspection resport on that place 4+ years back. I am sure that I have eaten at places with much worse inspection reports than they had, but it has just stuck in my mind and I can never bring myself to going back in there.

there are three places to go to in Milwaukee for cheap food.  Sobelmans, Oakland Gyros, or Soup brothers

I know this is a joke, but they made a burger that won a competition...now you stack the traditional Sobel up against anything - that burger shall lose!!!!
But I like to throw handfuls...

If you are going Wagyu, the one at Poto on Thursdays WAY better. I was going more standard beef burger.

Something a little different... I really liked Bel Air Cantina on Water and Humboldt.

Food was good, prices very reasonable.

Cosign.  I used to work near there 9-10 years ago, and we went there twice a week, easy.

Reasonable but great food - Miss Katies
Not only is Miss Katie's not "downtown," it's a toilet. The food is horrible. I went there last year and was appalled that this once great place had turned into a complete dump. I wouldn't recommend it on any level. The silverware and plates looked like they hadn't been replaced since 1987.

Seriously...Denny's is a palace compared to what's become of Miss Katie's Diner. I can't even believe people would still eat there. I almost walked out it was so bad.

Milwaukee ave has been reincarnated:  Zarletti's (Italian, delish), Distill (bourbon place, and BEST burger i have EVER eaten, sorry Sobelman), Umami moto (asian fusion), sake tumi (sushi), carnevor (self explanatory/steak house), charro (good mexican place), and Indulge (winery/charcuterie).

The Knick is tasty, too, but off the beaten path (prospect & juneau). Close to the BC (old world 3rd) is the 'hole in the wall' brick 3 (mediocre but cheap), Molly cool's is decent for seafood (more $$, 10-25), Tutto/Notte (modestly priced italian & a sports bar & a dance club), and finally, my new personal favorite is the red accordion which is that forlorn looking stand-alone building on the north side of old world 3rd before you hit juneau ave.  Delicious, perfect for a date or w/ friends b/c you buy several small plates & can share or have to yourself. Kinda like a tapas bar.

Oh, and as for campus: The annex is now staffed by the WoW house of wings or something.  It's decent.  There is the Dogg Haus, Jimmy John's & Qdoba.  Haggs is gone as is the china buffet.  There's still subway and the sketch grocery store.  that's about it, how sad!  Oh, i guess i shouldn't omit the Open Pantry . . . and Caffs & Murphs are still there also.

Alright, PM me if you need other suggs!  welcome back.

Have to second this. Food is very good but beer is a little expensive. Owned by the same people who own Comet and Honeypie.

Co-sign on Wicked Hop.   Last time I was there, I had their buffalo chili and it was scrumptious.  Also had their ribs, which were excellent.  (Go figure.)
