BMO Harris Bradley Center bids on NCAA tourney games

Marquette University, the BMO Harris Bradley Center and Visit Milwaukee have jointly submitted a bid to the NCAA for future men's NCAA basketball tournament games.

The bids are for preliminary rounds in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

The BMO Harris Bradley Center has hosted NCAA men's basketball games six separate times. The most recent was earlier this year for second- and third-round games.

Debate is well under way to replace the arena, first opened in October 1988, with a new, multipurpose arena. The NBA wants a new arena by 2017 for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Yet while the discussion continues, BMO Harris Bradley Center officials say they will work to keep the arena viable. The Bucks lease at the arena ends in 2017.

Yes, but good to collect the revenue (as they will probably be playing players by 2016 so they will need it).

Tournament games are and always will be a great thing for the city. Not only a fun couple of days and a buzz around downtown, but a nice little boost to the local economy as well. Hope they're successful. I missed this year for the first time in the Bradley Center era of NCAA tourney games, so I really hope it gets back here quickly.

The one caveat is I never want to again see the Badgers and their fans celebrating in our building. If that was a true neutral site game, they lose to Oregon. The BC crowd willed them to that win.

I wonder how much MU has made in the past from these events? It strikes me more as a prestigue thing than a money maker for MU. It certainly brings money into the city, but that in itself does not benefit MU. Does anybody know what a host school gets?

I'd want this if MU didn't make a penny off of being the host school. It's a great event for the city and a real boost to the downtown economy for one weekend anyway. It's not like Milwaukee is oozing with cool things to do in the middle of March!! It's a unique and nationally popular event in a city that loves sports, a basketball junkie dream.

I agree, but I was questioning the post that said MU would need the revenue to pay its players. I did not think it was a revenue thing and that is why I am asking.

I'm with you bilsu, I was kind of wondering myself the financial, if any, impact for the host school. I've got to believe there's something they get from it.

In 2018 we could be playing in the new downtown stadium. Then we earn a high seed in the NCAAs and play the opening rounds at the BC (which is allowable b/c it's not our home floor).

Sounds good to me. So that rule that stated you must play "x" amount of miles from your campus no longer applies? I dig it.

Can't we get UWM to sponsor the tournament so the Bradley Center WON'T be considered our home floor?

I believe the rule is still if you play more than 3 games on a court (not counting tournaments), then it is considered a "home" court and you can't play there in the NCAAs.

This is usually why Villanova gets more creative when Philly is hosting games.

I agree. The only way we should bid again is if the Badgers are willing to host at the kohl center as well.
But chances are they wont, or they will pull some $hit like playing 12 Neutral Site games at Edgerton HS.

We cannot play in Milwaukee, if it is held here and we cannot play in Milwaukee if it is not held here. Beisdes that, if you are not a top four seed you can get shipped anywhere.

That is why we dont host it again until Madison is willing.
