Yes please.
-
Be somebody, Wojo!
-
Don't we have an Alec Peters connected poster on here? I want to say it was Big Daddy.
Would be a ridiculously talented pickup in likely June
-
If he transfers, Vandy is the popular (easy) prediction. Aside from them, we'd be competing with every program that has an available scholarship. The golden goose of the grad transfer market, IMO.
-
I don't know. Feels like Austin Nichols 2.0. It's a nice thought - him coming to MU and all - but he probably already knows where he's going and that's somewhere near the Cumberland River...
-
I don't think Vanderbilt is automatic, considering he'll have his choice of blue bloods, but I also think we'd be a long shot. The Austin Nichols comparison seems apt.
-
Valpo is in rebuilding mode and that would be tough for Peters to showcase his talents. He is a heck of a player and leader. Does he stay or go to Vanderbilt, another program in a rebuilding cycle? Would he get lost in the shuffle at some schools? My bet is he'll go to a school where he sees immediate playing time and a strong chance of getting the NCAA Tournament.

What kind of cycle are we in?

-
He would start and immediately be a 30min per game guy on a team returning 3 double digit scorers (or maybe it's 4, I forget).
Let's do this.
-
What part of the rebuilding cycle? Almost complete after the train wreck created by the former school prez, former AD and yes the former coach.
-
If Peters main goal is to increase his draft status, he would look for a program where he would be the star and still make a run in the ncaa tournament. If he thinks he can be a star at the blue bloods, than that's where he'll go. But we are in a pretty good position to recruit him IMHO. I think we are a fringe NCAA team without him. We have a gaping hole at the position Peters plays. He would be be the star and we would be an NCAA tournament lock.
Wishful thinking on my part, but it seems like the fit would make sense.
-
Peters seems like what we hoped Henry could be as a sophomore. He can score, rebound, shoot well and efficiently, defend without fouling, get to the line...if he could replicate his play at the Big East level, he could make us a contender for top 3 in the league. I'm really trying to not get my hopes up because he seems too perfect.
-
Why do we do this every off-season ... Start a thread about every single transfer and then have a wet dream about him coming to MU?
Why do we think he every knows where MU is, let alone is interested? For all we know, he thinks we are in the UP.
-
Because we are fans. That's what fans do.
Look there are plenty of was to get the word out to a guy like Alec without violating any NCAA contact rules. I'm sure some friend of a friend of his old AAU coach will probably say "hey you know you should contact MU, they have a need at your position" and the word will get passed.
That said the chance to finish your career with the coach that "made you a star" and who you feel comfortable with is a powerful draw.
-
Because it's the offseason, that what we do!

In all seriousness, has Marquette been mentioned anywhere (other than Scoop) as a landing spot for Peters?
Sure, he'd be great. Usually, there's a little buzz (not Buzz, but buzz) about these kinds of things if there's possibly any "there there."

I mean, he announced yesterday. Usually it takes a few days for a list of candidate to emerge.

Did he even announce he will transfer yet? I know he said he is considering it, but didn't think any decisions were made yet.
-
He didn't announce anything. He can't, hasn't officially graduated yet. And he isn't coming to Marquette.

At last check, he hasn't even announced he is withdrawing from the NBA draft. Enough smoke around it to say pretty conclusively he's coming back with the option to transfer, but there's been little communication so far. That could indicate he's unofficially exploring his options already.

He's coming back to college. Deadline was Wednesday evening.

Thanks, I checked Twitter this morning and still found no confirmation. Had no doubts he'd be back in college, but like actually seeing it in print.

Tri, with training wheels.

So you're solidly against silly off-season threads. Got it. Good to know.
TAMU was there first.

Not on Scoop. Within seconds, we are a feasible landing spot.

And if we don't land him, it's all on Wojo.

Well it is not MUscoops fault. We immediately identified him as a player we should get.

Well done. Applause.
-
Well, I had him as one of the few players to ever be in the top 3% percent of all players in value add 3 years in a row - and the last two years were easily in the top 1% (18th most valuable player and the 26th).
That's the kind of talent I don't mind dreaming about landing late. So if there is any hope ...

Alec Peters back to Valpo (because Wojo cooled on him)
-
Said he will be returning to Valpo per Rothstein.
-
Damn it, Valpo.
They didn't want to play the game right, so now we're going to watch them lose every game.
-
Valpo, you dogs!
(Can't spell Valpo without the Alpo!)
-
So not only do we start threads about every single transfer, now we start them about guys that don't transfer.
Seems like our choices are:
Empty chair
Ask Wally back
30 year old Sudanese PF in Canada.
-
Or to start more threads about it.

Alec Peters back to Valpo (because Wojo cooled on him)
Not that I ever expected to get him, but for someone looking to make the jump next year to the NBA, this isn't a great decision. I'm sure he loves Valpo, but returning to a team that lost 2 of their other top 4 scores, their leading rebounder, and their leading assist man, plus their coach, yeesh.
-
Said he will be returning to Valpo per Rothstein.
How curious. Step out of your comfort zone, young man, and dare to be great. Now, he'll continue to go up against second rate teams and be coached by a second rate staff.
Respect the decision, don't agree with it.
-

Maybe the assumption shouldn't be that he had option to grad transfer. Perhaps he didn't graduate.

This was my thought too.
He cannot graduate this summer. So if he transfers, he has to sit a year.

But now he can beat UW-M at least two more times!

I disagree. If a player is good enough to play in the NBA, they will find him.
-
I disagree. If a player is good enough to play in the NBA, they will find him.
Not even about being good enough. But if he had the opportunity to improve his game with better teammates and higher level competition, that could only help him. I meant it as an experience and improvement basis, not an exposure thing.
But if he wasn't going to graduate, this is all a moot point.
-
This was my thought too.

He graduates at the end of June. And for everyone ripping on him for staying, we would all be cool with Luke transferring to Syracuse this offseason if given the opportunity? Besides the fact that Marquette and valpo have about the same chances of making the tournament next year, there are very few teams in the country that will be way better than valpo and also increase his usage rate (Marquette is probably neither).
Also his girlfriend plays basketball at valpo as well.

So we're not SLU. We're Valpo. Awesome.

Maybe he likes the proximity to Gary

Exactly. Ask Damian Lillard, Stef Curry and CJ McCollum

Difference here is those 3 were top 10 draft picks. Alec Peters is currently listed as the 34th best NCAA junior by Draft Express. AKA a late 2nd rounder at the very best. NBA scouts aren't flying into IN for Peters like they were NC, PA, or UT for those 3. Apples to oranges.

Scouts at a few games this season, mainly to watch him and Kay felder.

Of course they are. Valpo is just east of Chicago. They play in a conference easily accessible by air.
The real question is lack of high level competition and doubts that scouts may have about that. By its not really going to harm him significantly.

...wonder how often guys are concerned by that. That is, the players.. "crap, if I go up a level(s) and don't play well, did I just screw myself??"
Wouldn't think a lot.. but probably a worthwhile consideration for *some*
Peters last season in conf: 132.5 ORtg, 63.0% eFG, 14% TO rate....
In 5 games vs. KenPom Tier A, as defined: 100.6 ORtg, 47.4% eFG, 20% TO rate

Yeah, but you don't have multiple scouts and GMs going to every game they play, like you do when there's a top 10 player at a mid major (Curry, Lillard, McCollum). You get a few games a year where the scouts are watching a few players on the court at the same time to see if any of the 3 or 4 potential players could potentially be worth a late 2nd round pick. Of course they're going to do their due diligence and watch more than just the 1 or 2 games they saw you that season in person, but you better hope you play well in those few games teams come out to watch you or you might be in a tough position.
Now think about if you're a potential late 2nd rounder who goes and joins a team that has a lottery pick on it (Marquette last season). All of a sudden almost every team has a scout at almost every game you play, so you have the chance to showcase your skills every night, not just once or twice a year.
-
Right. Because none of the other games are on television or are recorded.
Anyway if someone is already considered a fringe first round pick, scouts will go to his games. This isn't some diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered.
-

That's my exact point. Peters right now would be at best a late 2nd round pick in next year's draft. An increase in exposure would help him...assuming he doesn't get exposed at a higher level. Is dominating the mid majors going to increase his draft stock? He's already proven he can do that.

You are making two different points. The first was that "no one was going to fly into Indiana" to scout his games. Which is false. People will get to his games and scout him.
The second is that "dominating the mid majors" is likely not going to increase his draft stock. I agree with you here and pretty much acknowledged that to start. It at least is going to give people some pause.

I don't disagree with anything you're saying. Maybe I am just wording it poorly but I don't think comparing Alec Peters to CJ McCollum, Damian Lillard, and Steph Curry is a good comparison at all. Those 3 players were top 10 draft picks that every team in the NBA was flying scouts out to watch every single game. Scouts are not going to be living in Valparaiso from November through March. NBA teams will send a low level scout to a game or 2 where they can see Peters and some other potential late 2nd round pick match up in the Horizon League. Sure, if he's "good enough for the NBA he will be found." But to pretend Alec Peters will get the same exposure that McCollum, Lillard, and Curry got is simply wrong.
-

You are aware McCollum was injured his entire senior year, right?

Maybe it isn't about draft stock, exposure or level of competition. Maybe he just likes playing at Valpo....

That's fine, but he'll only be there for one more year. A little myopic if you ask me. But again, totally his call and I respect it.

But ESPN told me that if he came to Marquette he'd only be in a mid-major. Probably figured that out and it's why he stayed.

Seeing as we just hit page 3 with your post, probably not happening...
