Let's go now! I fully expect a W tonight.
-
Getting early high end potential Omax
-
Early on Justin is in Creighton mode
-
Drives to the iron - what the h?
-
OMax came to play.
-
Glad we are taking in in the paint
-
Early on Justin is in Creighton mode
That changed
-
It’s the hair.
-
The dunk accentuates the hair!
-
BAM!! Maybe that awakens JLew.
-
All day!! Attack, Attack, Attack. Lewis should plant his ass inside.
-
They have really gone away from just launching a three every time down.
-
JLew rocking the Sideshow Bob. I don’t hate it. New ‘do, new ‘tude.
-
OK let's play like this the rest of the night. What a start, looking hungry for a win
-
Love the attack in the paint. Have we crap anything outside 8 feet yet?!
-
They have really gone away from just launching a three every time down.
Yes, and this offensive style is much better suited for this collection of players.
The way they are playing today will open up good looks from the three
-
OHHH....YESSS!! And 1.
-
Fantastic start for the boys! Justin being a dude helps
-
Greg not puking on the bench tonight.
-
First fast start of the year. Hope the first of many.
-
Prov went zone and Greg got to the middle and found Daryl for a step in shot.
Good offense right now
-
Superb start and energy on both ends of the floor. it's as if they have read my posts refuting Tower on launching indiscriminate triples.
-
OSSA!! Patience works.
-
Not sure if it’s just me but it seems that slower paced offensive MU >>> run and gun and shoot quickly with a ton of 3s MU
Just seems more organized with higher percentage shots, even though they are mostly twos
-
Providence looks like what Marquette usually looks like, scoring 10 points in 9 minutes. I like being on the other side!
-
Yes, and this offensive style is much better suited for this collection of players.

Of course the driving lanes may only be open because teams are playing us to shoot the the three based on the film. Gotta find a balance.
-
Starting to force a couple 3s now.
Predictably not going in.
Keep pounding paint
-
I kind of would like to see Ellis get some of Mitchell's minutes to see if he can do something
-
Don’t stop doing what got you here!
-
C'mon Stevie!!
-
Two silly fouls on jump shots. Can't lose focus.
-
The Stevie freshman mistakes are too many and too disproportionate to freshman positives
Is Kam supposed to be out long?
-
I do know why Shaka does not sit down a player after a stupid 3 point shot?
-
We are great for bailout fouls to ruin a great defensive possession at the end of the click when it was apparent they were in trouble.
Let’s see what happens vs. the zone.
-
Nvm there’s Kam
-
So much for that start.
-
We seriously cannot have 1 game where the officiating is even 50/50.
Everything on us and nothing on Omax blatantly getting bumped to the ground?
-
Cam and Greg should be shooting 3s if were shooting 3s!!
-
Starting to force a couple 3s now.
Predictably not going in.
Keep pounding paint
Prov went to zone, when MU up 14, MU has since clunked four three pointers.
Also fouled on three point shot and Prosper with moving pick and turnover.
So much for 14 point lead. Back to normalcy.
Good coaching job by Cooley going to zone.
Those darn refs again and again…..
-
Waiting too long to take a t-o. Got sped up and making terrible decisions after an excellent 8 mins. Move the freaking basketball, value the ball, and exercise patience. We can still attack the paint va the zone.
-
No movement against the zone, what do they work on after last game?
-
Every game MU has one guy who just kills them.
-
disapointed in the t shirts these guys are wearing. wear some darker shoes. dress like ball players. look ur best play ur best
-
That Kolek 3 was a puzzler.
-
Are the calls as bad as they seem to be in person?
-
Prov goes zone. MU is clueless... tons of turnovers. Just gave back the entire good start.
And, I can see no reason that Shaka recruited OMAX.
-
MU starts shooting three’s and their lead evaporates. They were so much more efficient early. Stopped moving the ball.
-
7 to 2 in the foul department………
Every game. Shaka, please ride the refs a little. Don’t be like Wojo.
-
Prov goes zone. MU is clueless... tons of turnovers. Just gave back the entire good start.
And, I can see no reason that Shaka recruited OMAX.
No reason? Yikes
-
Cam and Greg should be shooting 3s if were shooting 3s!!
Or EE.
-
7 to 2 in the foul department………
Every game. Shaka, please ride the refs a little. Don’t be like Wojo.
He just was after that awful no call
-
Bad 3 pt shot sections leading the away to pissing away a great start.
-
Great defense!! They're under 5 on shot clock often
-
That was a good TO huddle
-
PG…..good to hear. I didn’t see that but glad to hear. I couldn’t stand Wojo not getting on the refs.
-
Holy sh it. Ref waited til Justin got wacked 3 times to finally call the foul
-
DEFENSE!!!
Kur!!
-
So much for that start.
Like I said ;D
-
Does Kuath's jersey say KURTH?
-
Good TO
it’s a much easier game when u make a few threes
-
Yep…..what was he waiting for? Blood?
-
when r students back? brutal crowd
-
Outstanding response. Finish the half strong, get it up to 22-25.
-
Prov goes zone. MU is clueless... tons of turnovers. Just gave back the entire good start.
And, I can see no reason that Shaka recruited OMAX.
Huh? OMax has 7 points and has been hounding Hoerchler all night
-
Holy sh it. Ref waited til Justin got wacked 3 times to finally call the foul
Agreed.
-
I prefer watching this MU team play. I hope they stick around a while

-
Fun 16 minutes.
-
Yea, i think i am good with the stevie minutes. Its been a while since one player being on the court has destroyed our offense.
Good response from the starters and Kam
-
Huh? OMax has 7 points and has been hounding Hoerchler all night
Also he’s had 3 excellent drives, 1 just happened to rim out.
And got blatantly tripped on a 4th.
He’s been great tonight. And also contributes in other ways when his scoring offense blows
-
Prov goes zone. MU is clueless... tons of turnovers. Just gave back the entire good start.
And, I can see no reason that Shaka recruited OMAX.
Do you ever wonder how you can be so consistently wrong over and over again?
-
The defense has been phenomenal.
Kur is fantastic down there and everyone else has been great
-
Please for the love of god do not give up this lead
-
BAM!!! CONTINUE TO DOMINATE!!
-
Sweet Jesus. Lame call on Kur.
-
Kolek mastering the quick swipe
-
KABOOM!! KOLEK!!
-
This team will go dancing! Hopefully we get THIS team for the rest of the year.
-
That was a hall of fame TO by Shaka.
-
Fun half.
Need one more solid defensive half to make a full game.
-
Damn. Hate that foul.
-
Hell of a half
-
Ughh. Handed them 4 pts but that was a tremendous half for the Warriors. Keep attacking and good results will come.
-
That was fun to watch!
-

-
Wow
Ball movement... energy... made 3 pointers ! Let’s make it a full game effort. Get a big win.
-
Hoping they realize that D was what got them in command, and can keep it up.
-
Best defense I've seen played by a Marquette team in I don't know how long. Incredible defensive energy, effort, rotation. Please sustain in the second half. Our length and activity have Providence flustered and Watson a non-factor (so far.)
-
This team will go dancing! Hopefully we get THIS team for the rest of the year.
Calm down it was only one half of basketball haha!
-
Wow
Ball movement... energy... made 3 pointers ! Let’s make it a full game effort. Get a big win.
Ban dis guy^^^ Complete pud. About 50 negative posts in a row including in this thread asking why Shaka recruited OMax. This dude has no clue. A basketball idiot.
-
Elon
8891 is not someone I would recommend to learn the game from. Lot of negative guys getting excited tonight.
-
Finally, a game where we can put our collective feet on the neck of an opponent and not let them up. Can Shaka get done what Wojo couldn’t? Seems like the past few years, big leads would get blown.
We got this.
-
Two nice dimes by TK.
-
I think Nate Watson played with Austin Croshere on the Providence team that beat MU in the tourney in the 90s
-
Kolek and the pick an roll = awesome
Killed Creighton with it ...and it’s been a clinic the last few mins.
-
Elon
8891 is not someone I would recommend to learn the game from. Lot of negative guys getting excited tonight.
Yep - he’s a bonafide clown.
-
This looks like a completely different basketball team.
-
Ok, let’s stop fouling them for 3 though
-
Idiots
-
STOP FOUlLING ON JUMP SHOTS.
-
The only thing worse than accidentally liking an announcer before realizing he’s Brian Butch is him being right about MU fouling 3 pt shooters
-
More great passing on that Oso dunk
-
If you are one of the complainers about how thw refs are against us - just watch this game.
Utter stupidity - over and over.
-
If you are one of the complainers about how thw refs are against us - just watch this game.

the refs are out to get Theo John !
-
We can attack rhis team at will. Remain focused, execute, and be relentless.
-
If you are one of the complainers about how thw refs are against us - just watch this game.
Utter stupidity - over and over.
They were calling no bumps on Providence in the first half.
The calls against us have all been good especially the stupid jump shooter fouls
-
If you are one of the complainers about how thw refs are against us - just watch this game.
Utter stupidity - over and over.
Yeah, we have more fouls and we should have more fouls in this one. No doubt. We might have even gotten away with a couple.
-
3 point makes…oh how I’ve missed you
-
Brian Butch is quickly becoming one of my favorite announcers. It is a little painful to admit that.
-
Calm down it was only one half of basketball haha!
Not sure if you read through the lines?
-
Kam Jones is gonna be a damn bucket as his career goes on
-
Thatta boy Kam!
-
This is awfully refreshing to watch!
-
Not going to score in the 50’s against a good team with 14:18 to go yet. :P
-
Pedal to the metal, all game please.
Margins matta
-
Brian Butch is better announcer than he was a player. I like him on the call tonight.

Out of curiosity what the greatest run of uncontested points MU has had in a game? I think we went 20-0 tonight?
-
We need to send Tower out to perform a wellness check on Nolonger Warriors...
-
I think the best part, is the guys look like they are finally having fun and playing relaxed out there tonight.
-
Out of curiosity what the greatest run of uncontested points MU has had in a game? I think we went 20-0 tonight?
Yes 20-0 was the peak tonight
-
Goose - I said that to my badger brother the other day - but is that a rip on his playing career :).
ftp://Brian Butch is better announcer than he was a player. I like him on the call tonight.
-
B-ass bailout call by the zebra there on OMax.
-
Killa Kam
-
Point
He is a solid announcer and was a marginal player.
-
Hope Sean Jones has the impact like Kam Jones!!
-
Is Kam a bit like Van Exel was in college?
-
Well boys, hate to say it. But I dont think covid is going to allow me to make it to the end of this game. Good night!
-
Is Kam a bit like Van Exel was in college?
Why would you ruin a great night by comparing an MU player to a….Bearcat?
-
Agree on both - like him as an announcer too
Point
He is a solid announcer and was a marginal player.
-
Why would you ruin a great night by comparing an MU player to a….Bearcat?
Sorry. I was just thinking about his ceiling.
-
This is a completely different team tonight. It's refreshing to see.
-
Sorry. I was just thinking about his ceiling.
I’m already struggling with positive thoughts about a Badger, don’t make me do it about a Bearcat too
-
Fast starts is key for this team. It allows them to pressure the ball and get some transition easy baskets. Fast start has been my key of the game for past ten games.
-
Should we extend Shaka now!?!

-
I’m already struggling with positive thoughts about a Badger, don’t make me do it about a Bearcat too
Fair enough. I totally understand.
-
Last post for the night. I enjoy that in the "coach huddle" Shaka doesn't just randomly scream about effort, but actually talks about what they should be doing during the game. Wild.
-
We need to send Tower out to perform a wellness check on Nolonger Warriors...
I expect something like... 'If Shaka was any good they would play lime that all the time.' Or some such nonsense.
-
Brian Butch is better announcer than he was a player. I like him on the call tonight.
I hate that I like him as an announcer.
He has a style — tone and inflection — reminiscent of Tony Romo.
I hate it. I hate him.
He’s good.
-
So we’ve got our best distributor with 8 assists,
our best overall player and scorer with nearly a double double,
our best defensive player (sorry Darryl) with 6 blocks, 5 boards and several other shots altered,
our best shooter with 14 pts on 4/5 from 3,
several other guys filling their roles admirably,
and our best defensive effort of the year.
That’s how you go up 30 on a top 25 team.
-
That’s a laughably bad call
Luckily we are up 29.
How do you miss a guy dribbling off his own face
-

He’s good.
I don’t like his voice and he sounds like Dakich, but he’s actually really solid content and contribution wise.
Which is interesting cause he’s objectively awful on his radio show
-
What in the heck did Vegas know? Lol
-
Big 7 minutes coming.

Remember Dr. V, Providence is a very good defensive ball club. We're a completely different team tonight on both ends of the floor. It's only one game but it's does show we have potential. I think the inside attack mindset opened up our entire arsenal and we have shown better patience offensively. Defensively we have been steady and solid for the entire game.
-
EE healthy?

:)

I wish we could have Kolek go back in time and teach Howard how to throw that pick-n-roll pass. I always felt that was the part missing from his game.
Or have Howard teach Kolek how to shoot like him.
-
This has been beautiful basketball tonight. Could be a real game changer.
-
Petal to the medal lets fu*king go!!!!
Man this one feels great.
What a performance, proud to be a Marquette fan tonight

100% That in the huddle segment was better coaching than anything I saw in 7 years of Wojo.
-
A younger me would be fretting about why MU hasn’t played like this all year, but the older me is just enjoying it

Credit to you Muggsy you were calling for a slow down more patient attack from very early on, and most, including myself, thought it would never happened because that wasn’t the offensive style Shaka wanted.
I pointed out that it wasn’t really his offense, kudos to Shaka for implementing a change offensively
-
We need walk-in’s!

We broke Providence tonight. Unreal.

Kolek and Howard on the court together would have been basically unstoppable. Markus would have gotten even more wide open looks.
-
Very fun game! Big W. Let’s add to it Friday!

This is as good an overall team performance as we have had in quite some time. Great cohesion on both ends of the floor and tremendous unselfishness. I think despite one 3 min stretch we passed the rock as well as we have all season. We also slowed down a bit and got much better shots. It's obviously only one game but I do think there are huge positives to take from tonight.
-

Lol. Coming from the guy who in the last 48 hours said "this team sucks."

Remember the projos who used to defend Wojo’s lack of leadership and strategy in the huddle? “Nobody uses the huddle to teach”, “You can’t talk strategy, the other team might be watching”, blah, blah, blah. Truth? He didn’t have anything instructive to say.

Yes, the million and two times I screamed that the roller was open and we threw to him...twice.

How is "Play Harder! <pause> Play harder! <pause> Play harder!" not instructive?

I loved getting bashed for commenting on the huddle talk from Wojo. Shows the basketball IQ of many on a message board. Impressive performance tonight, by the way.

Perfect description - made me laugh!

Yes, the million and two times I screamed that the roller was open and we threw to him...twice.
It was very frustrating and always made me wonder “why not just slip a pass there Markus?!?”
Then I realized he was a very very tiny dude. I’ve never played basketball at a high level but I can imagine that it’s very hard for a little guy like Markus to be able to have the vision and ability necessary to make those passes like Kolek can.
Markus was clearly wired/taught/gifted to score, not to find the open guy.
We’ve got another little guy coming next year and we will see how his passing on drives to the paint compare to Koleks, but Tyler’s vision and ability to make those reads and the perfect pass are an incredible gift

Right there with you Goose. I think I was banned from Scoop 6 times during the Wojo years. 8-)

Huddles? Seriously?

My god.
Huddles? Seriously?
His in game coaching and roster management was equally awful and evident. The huddles just gave a close up of how little impact, and ideas he had as a coach. But enough about the past...are you more excited about MU hoops now or during the Wojo years?!

If Shaka saying "Don't foul, don't give up offensive rebounds, don't give up threes" is "talking strategy" then you and I actually agreed for years!
-
There was nothing slow about the offense tonight. Over 80 possessions this game (would rank #1 in the country if that was our average). We were a lot slower in our three most recent losses. Difference was that our guys were able to beat their defenders both on and off the ball and get into the key for easy shots and kick outs.
Edit: Whoops. I did the possessions calculation in my head and messed it up. The actual number was 64, which would rank towards the bottom of D1 if we averaged it. I'd have to watch the game again but my recollection was that we weren't playing deep into the shot clock that often. We did make Providence play deep into the shot clock often which may have driven the possession numbers down.

I am confused on all the slowdown talk. That was a highly efficient half court offense, but not slowed down in my book.

Efficient and in control for sure. I think that was what felt like a "slowdown" for lots.
-
The offense sure does feel a lot different, that’s for sure.
Apparently it wasn’t “slowed down” in terms of possessions, but last nights offense just seemed so different. Maybe it’s just because it was working, but I feel like Shaka has tweaked some things with regards to shot selection and playing more in control and thru better passing more interior play.
One example I can give us that off the top of my head I don’t really recall more than 2 really bad and rushed 3P attempts- one was Kolek that he really rushed and wasn’t opened, shouldn’t have taken it. Another was Kam from way downtown and he’s allowed to do that every so often, he made it.
-
Doctor
The big difference was making the shots. Once they started making the shots the game got easier. They have been so tight shooting the ball that I am surprised we have not blown out in ten games. For the first time last night they started quickly, and the game slowed down for the guys.
-
MU focused on getting to the rim, both off of the dribble, and off the pick and roll. Providence was a step or two slow all night, both in P &R defense and recovering to shooters. Maybe staying in the Midwest after their Depaul game left them flat. Who knows? MU attacked from the start and Providence had no answers.
-
Nolongerwarriors didn’t post in the game thread 😂
-
I am confused on all the slowdown talk. That was a highly efficient half court offense, but not slowed down in my book.
The pace yesterday was 64. MU’s average is 73. The D1 average is 69. MU made a concerted effort to feed the paint in the half court where they outscored PC 38-28. It was just more efficient (1.37). As Badger Butch pointed out, MU was running their offense more with a purpose.
Granted, part of this slower pace was driven by PC’s tendencies and MU’s defense, but MU was much more patient offensively (with a few exceptions like when PC switched to a zone in the 1H). It was also MU’s lowest turnover rate and highest OR% rate of the season.

I would love to see what our average possession length was last night. We've taken so many shots this year with less than 10 seconds off the shot clock, I feel like we're better in that 12-18 range. I think much of the low possession total last night was Providence playing slow both because that's what they do (#305 in average offensive possession length) and what we force (#320 in average defensive possession length).

So it seems my eye test was accurate then, after all.
