College Basketball NIL Tournament
« on: March 08, 2024, 05:58:04 PM »
Good for the kids. Great for the kids actually!

But making tournaments about making money in College just feels weird.

https://twitter.com/FOS/status/1766232265418256748?t=F_sWlsqFZPHyzlU5eugmow&s=19

BREAKING: A first-of-its-kind tournament featuring NIL deals as payouts is coming to college basketball next season.

The 8-team invitational in Vegas will guarantee $1M be split among players on each team—with another $1M to the winning team.

College basketball's first-ever NIL payout tournament—called 'Players Era'—will be played at MGM Arena in Las Vegas.

Sources tell FOS the tournament organizers are in talks with:
• Alabama
• Duke
• FAU
• Houston
• Kansas
• Oregon
• San Diego State
• St. Joe's
• Syracuse
• Virginia

St. Joseph?  Oh wait, I see AND1 is involved. I know some of the founders of that company and they are from Philly…must be due to that.

Seems like now those schools could have a recruiting advantage in the portal due to the fact that there is $1,000,000+ in NIL money available to them that wasn't before and isn't to the rest.
VIOLENCE!

Sounds like a bad idea…. Someone on Twitter asked a good question.  NIL is based ON name image and likeness and this seems to be pay for play.   And how can these schools not have an advantage?

Where is the release or a quote from these “folks”?

A tweet from “Front Office Sports” offers many possibilities for the why of the bad info, but it’s bad info. Again, happy to wager.

Why have to travel to and play in a tournament? NIL deals are plenty available especially for some of the teams listed. I could see a school like St.Joe's/FAU/SDSU being interested. I don't think the dollars being offered move the needle for P6 programs or players. (It's like $5K per player after taxes)
