Title: Wisconsin Mr. Basketball
Post by: 77ncaachamps on April 19, 2014, 04:50:55 PM
Curiosity led me to compare MU and UW hooking in Wisconsin Mr. Basketball winners.

UW (9)
2012 Dekker
2007 Nankivil (co-)
2003 Butch
2001 Harris
2000 Wilkinson
1995 Okey
1992 Timmerman
1986 Portmann
1982 Olson

MU (6*)
2013 Fischer
2009 Maymon
2007 Christopherson (co-)
2005 Matthews
1993 Pieper
1990 Key

*Marshall Williams (1999) committed to MU but never played. He enrolled and reportedly took classes before  transferring to Vincennes JC before the season started.

Notable WI Mr. Basketball winners who committed elsewhere
1988 Bennett (UWGB)
1983 Wolf (UNC)
1991 Rayford (Kansas)
2014 Looney (UCLA)

WI Miss Basketball comparison is no contest: UW 10, MU 3.

Okey, Timmerman and Portman did nothing at Wisconsin. It pretty much evened out talent wise.

I want Marshall Williams included in Marquette's total.  Call it a catch and release.

Maymon and Christopherson didn't even finish at MU, or do much when they were here. & Fischer hasn't even played yet.

Maymon and SC didn't want to stay with Buzz.   Fischer got the benefit of Buzz not wanting to stay with him.

Wasn't Vander Blue a POY in WI? If not, who beat him out for it?

Not sure about Maymon...

In fact, it could be argued that the Maymon recruitment was indicative of a new sheriff in town

Since MU 2003 FF (so starting in 2004) MU leads 4 to 2 (5 going elsewhere)

Does Bucky's FF run this year change this trend?

We definitely had the recruiting momentum in the state, until some traditionals came through recently that are pretty good (Decker and that pg).

I'm not ready to anoint Koenig as anything.  He had one nice half in the Final Four.  Before that?  He averaged 3 points per game.  He will be fine, but he will not be a world beater.  Bo will slow his game down and he will average 10 and 5 for them as a junior and senior.  Again, fine, but not a world beater.

Will be interesting to see if Wojo can continue to get the inner city talent,  getting Duane, Burton, Vander, Maymon, McKay type commits.  Obviously they didn't all work out but we were attracting the top inner-city wisco talent.

Timmerman and Okey both transferrred out of WI.

True about Fischer. He's practiced but hasn't made an appearance officially in a game.

Only 3 were drafted in the NBA draft from the list. Looney may make it 4.

I believe Marshall Williams started at NC State, then committed to Marquette but didn't want to sit out a year so he went to Vincennes, then to UW-Green Bay for like 15 minutes, then an NAIA school in Kentucky.

That's correct.

I didn't mention it here, just the commitment to transfer after nc state

You could make a good case that Wesley Matthews has had the best pro career of these guys.

Which is kinda sad considering the number of WI players in the NBA.

Born in WI vs playing HS bkb in WI are two distinct things.
So the following is a list of WI-born NBA/ABAers. Interesting list: http://www.basketball-reference.com/friv/birthplaces.cgi?country=US&state=WI

Most recent list of NBAers born in WI:
Vander
Tony Mitchell
Ray McCallum
Buycks
Diante Garrett
Jerry Smith
Kyle Weaber
Marcus Landry
Devin Harris
Travis Diener
Reece Gaines
Caron Butler
Chris Mihm
Mike Wilks
Alex Scales

Sam Okey was the freshman of the year in the B10 and was second team all conference both years he was at Wisconsin.  Plenty of talent, but was a head case, had academic issues and got injured.

He's now a hairstylist in Wausau.  Not kidding.

TJ Bray?
TJ had a great Ivy League career.  2nd leading scorer in the league this year.  Scoring, assists, rebounds, did it all.

I'm not sure what he's going to do.  May play overseas.  May coach.  May make a ton of dough in business.

Good numbers for a college career too. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/52716/tj-bray

Ouch why?  He wasn't recruited by MU or any other high major program.

TJ was never a high major prospect.  I think GB had some interest at some point.  Lights out on his ACT, and attracted attention from the Ivies.

He was perfectly suited for Princeton and he has many options.

If you're a POY for your state and you have the tools, I think it's worth the interest from MU, especially if his dad is an alum. Tip the hat. No offer necessary but interest. He did have solid numbers at Princeton. Good backup numbers if at MU.

We definitely could have used him this year. But over the previous years? Maybe not.

Yesterday's paper had the Connecticut Basketball All-state team with profiles on each.  The profiles listed the senior's next years plans and I was curious where they were headed. The player of the year was 7-footer who has only been playing basketball for 4-years and he's headed to Providence.  Only three other players were headed to Division I, one was headed to Pittsburgh, one to Marist and the other to Dartmouth.  Not lot of depth in state talent.

Did it include prep schools or just CT public high schools?

Public & Private schools, but no prep schools.  A few of the graduating seniors were headed to "prep school".  And the kid who committed to Pitt is only a Sophomore.
