My friends loved Pizza Man .. very time my friends wanted to go, we'd go .. wait for 90 minutes in the "bar" where no one could really stand .. then get a small table and eat pizza.

Never understood the attraction.

In this economy, I'll bet it was 'electrical'.

Not as many insurance fires as one might think in this economy, probably because people let their insurance lapse first.     We have been expecting a wave of them and it just hasn't happened.    Check the electrical first, then whether the ovens were turned off.    Also, any enemies.   Were the doors open or shut when the ff's arrived?   Could be covering a burglary.    After all of those things are eliminated, then get to insurance.    Although, it is easy to 'accidentally' leave something on when you want it to be an insurance fire.   Nearly impossible to prove if it turns out the base of the fire was the kitchen or a kitchen appliance.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

The fire did start above the restaurant. Also gone are Grecian Delight and Cush. The entire East Side smells like a campfire.
But I like to throw handfuls...

I'm heartbroken I can no longer go to CUSH

Kidding aside, glad it was limited and didn't spread any further and by all reports, no one was hurt.

I 100% agree, would not have been in the top 10 places in chicago.  That said still one of the best in milwaukee.  I would say the best but i haven't lived there for a while.

It wasn't near the top in Milwaukee, but was nice to walk to on the East Side. The biggest loss is they had a fantastic wine selection worth a ton. That is one of the saddest things that is lost.

Honestly, I've been taken aback by the number of people who loved PM.    I never liked it.

But that provoked a question at the Hilltopper residence.  What other place in the Milwaukee area would get so much love, show so many angst ridden people on TV .. if it burned down?

Certainly has to do with longevity.  PM was established in 1970, 40 years.

So what other Milwaukee eateries have been around 20+ years that would create equal angst?

Maders? or Turners?  Major Goolsby's?
Wolski's?
I'd say Real Chili, but not really, since there are two locations.  Kopps fits that too.
Bartolotta's?

Arts Performing Center or Hey Hey Ricky's on State?

I factor atmosphere and liquor selection into my ratings.
Top 3 in order.

Chicago:
Uno/duo
Lou Malnatti's
Pizzano's

Vegas:
Capo's
Amore's
Anthony's (thin crust only)

I nearly lost my crap when Giordano's (yes I know its a chain, but it is effing good) closed down inside of Grand Ave, and they put up another god damn Applebee's.

Pizza Man is sort of an institution. The pizza good (not great), and relatively unique.

The location was one of the more famous intersections in Milwaukee, so everybody knew it as a landmark.

Other places that compare (if they burned down):

The Oriental
Landmark bowling
BBC's
Ma Fisher's
Hooligan's
Koz's mini bowling (well, probably not mainstream enough)
McGuilicuddy's (even though sometimes I wish it would burn down)

I must have lived in a bubble for 4 years.  I have never heard of Pizza man.  Before I opened this thread I thought maybe people were talking about the guy that sold pepperoni out of a hand cooler at the bars.

Not sure I agree with that list.

The Oriental, I agree.  That's a jewel.

Landmark Bowling?  Sure lots of people have been there .. but to reach Pizza Man status, you need to be going there at least on occasion, like every year or more.   Landmark bowling, BBCs, Ma Fishers, Hooligan's .. while popular .. people grow out of those.    In my 20s and early 30s, sure, I went to all those spots a bunch of times.

Not a lot of 40, 50 year olds going to any of those spots.

Pizza Man?  People go there year after year.  (And the Oriental.)

Are you talking about the cannoli guy?  He's awesome.  As for Pizza Man - I wasn't aware of it while at MU, but only became aware when I moved near Prospect after college.

Wolski's would be hands down the worst to lose.  You can't create the ambiance it has in a new place.  I saw a bumper sticker in my London Hostel this summer which made my day.

The Avalanche.

Sigh.

Hilltopper, weren't you crying crocodile tears over von Triers?

The only current establishment that, if it burned down, would bum me out:  Eddie Martini's.
Ludum habemus.
