Anyone here try this at McCormick?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2022/02/22/byu-rocket-fuel/

When police and fire crews responded to a blaze caused by an explosion at a Brigham Young University dorm, they found that it had been caused by a resident’s homemade “experiment” — rocket fuel.

The 22-year-old was cooking up about five pounds of a volatile mixture on the stovetop — wanting to experiment after seeing something about it online — when it “suddenly exploded into a fireball,” according to the BYU Police Department.

If there was an explosion at McCormick, it was from a still.

A couple days ago a MU student called me for the annual handout.

The script is the same, year in and year out, asking first to verify if I still live at 1234 MUScoop lane.

Then comes "Have you had a chance to visit campus lately?   Well, we've torn down McCormick and..."

.. then I start wailing.  "NOoooooOOOOO!  THAT WAS THE BEST!  HOW DARE YOU TEAR DOWN THAT DORM!"

Then she gets to the $360 ask.    I should have said "Rebuild McCormick first" and hung up.

The script never changes. I did it in 2014. I always laugh and say "lol good fo you for sticking to the actual ask amount but when you graduate and start paying bills see if you have an extra 300 to give to MU. I'll give $3 on a credit card recurring donation" that gives the caller a $4 commission (assuming the commissions the same) and then I cancel the recurring donation the next day.

Shoulda sed bring back Warriors furst, aina?

You have no idea how genuinely rude so many alumni of your age group are to student callers with this response. As if screaming at the 18-22yr old about a nickname before they were born is going to solve anything.

Because they don't actually WANT to give.  That ask is just their out.

I get what you were saying, and I am fine with people who politely say they don’t give because of the nickname issue. I just don’t like people who yell at student callers about issues they have no control over. And plenty of people DO yell.

Doing phone solicitation is an awful job - I know, I’ve done it. People who go off on these young men and women should be ashamed of themselves.

Glad to see the responses here. Absolutely spot on Lenny. The solicitors deserve respect and if you decline to donate, do so politely. In the spirit of our Marquette educations, this subject should not even be here. It should be a given.

Edit: Rudeness is not the province of any age group. Discrimination in any form-including ageism-is simply wrong.

To clarify, when I spoke to the MU student, I was entertaining.

When she suggested I donate at the $240 level, I offered an in-kind trade for a MUScoop premium membership.

I had no idea they got commissions. I understand that things may have changed, but what level of contribution was needed for the caller to earn a commission? I've done cold calling myself. It sucks. I'm happy to help them earn a commission.

Credit card donation is a small amount, a recurring donation is a couple dollars and a first time donation is another couple.

That's why I always do the recurring donation and then cancel it.
