Going to see the Globetrotters tonight.  It's been a long time.  I have such fond memories of the Globetrotters from my youth -- it was one of the few events that made its way to my small town.  My two youngest have never seen them.  I'm looking forward to it.

I will cover all bets on the Generals, especially since Sam Worthen is no longer the coach.
Have some patience, FFS.

I still can't figure out why the refs never T them up, given all the abuse the Globetrotters give them.

That would be a great idea for an SNL skit. The Globetrotters just doing their thing, and the ref tossing them all in the first two minutes....

Yeah, but it'll be a little slow when they stretch it out to 85 minutes for the movie.

I'm not sure what the line was, but the Globetrotters won by two: 8-6.  Sure, the score may seem low to you, but one of the Generals unplugged the scoreboard when there was about 20 seconds left because they were losing.  Since apparently nobody knew the score, the referee decided that the first team to eight points would be the winner.  Somehow, the Globetrotters rose to the occasion and pulled it off.

Interesting conundrum I heard yesterday: Would you rather...
  • ...lose an arm?
  • ...lose use of the internet for the rest of your life? (Bear in mind, no one else loses the internet)

So would this include my work related responsibilities as well?  Like email, IP phone, etc?  If so, I would lose the arm because I wouldn't be able to make a living.

But if you are talking about personal internet, I would rather live without it than an arm.  I've done it before, I can do it again.

Yup. No email, no travel assistance, no automated bill pay, no streaming entertainment. Travel and booking would be really tough.

But they are doing some incredible work with prosthetics...if you have $100,000 you can probably get a pretty solid replacement, though my guess is you will need use of the Internet for updates and functionality  ;D

Honest question, is it even possible to be a fully functional human being with responsibilities without the internet?

I don't think it's possible.

I don't think it's possible.

I think you can still make it work, but it would be terribly inconvenient. Everything would take longer by magnitudes of time, and would require much more manual effort (just thinking about balancing my checkbook and paying bills, for example) Most companies/services still allow you to do things the old fashioned way via mail, phone, or brick and mortar, but this is for a select population (75 years and older) that won't be around in 20 years, so I think in the medium-term future everything will be online.

But I think even in the example above, that is mostly for retired people. If you were younger and had to make a living, it would be incredibly hard. Professionally, you would have to be an independent small business owner (pet store, florist, small boutique) that wouldn't require the internet, and you'd be putting yourself at a major disadvantage without online advertising or a website, but I suppose in theory it could be done.

So I would lose the internet, but my wife/SO would still have it? If so, that would be my choice.

Losing the internet would be difficult no doubt, but my wife could do all the banking, shopping, etc. She and her sister already do much of this for their parents. She could not serve as my arm when I wanted to go on a bike ride or drive my car.

I would miss you all.  My father refuses to buy a computer or smart phone and leads a full life.
