So, I saw that the Redskins, Indians and Braves all lost on Columbus Day.  This means...something.

Honestly, with all the historical filtering going on, statues removed, names off buildings .. I'm stunned we still have Columbus day.

"Columbus Day" now appears as "Indigenous People's Day" on my calendar.

I once got detention for questioning the validity Columbus Day in high school.... well, not so much because I was questioning it, but because adding "the hell" immediately after the "Why" doesn't go over so well in a Catholic school.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

It's true! Read the first chapter of Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" and it becomes clear Columbus was a spectacularly awful person. Ten years from now Columbus Day will be history.

I have no idea why some Italian-Americans are hellbent on having Columbus Day as their personal version of St. Patrick's Day.

It's not politics, it's fact.  Columbus had no idea what he even discovered: the Bahamas, a/k/a the Wisconsin Dells of the Caribbean.

Frankly, we should have walked into work this morning asking everyone "How was your Vespucci Day weekend?"

No I mean it's politics why we will continue to have Columbus Day as a national holiday.

Several states have already eliminated it as a state holiday.

I think it is a race between legal marijuana nationwide, and elimination of Columbus Day as a federal holiday.

Are there any states that are looking to vote to legalize marijuana in the next couple years? I'm pretty surprised it's just 8 states that it's legal in.

Yes, I think the most likely outcome is that we will keep the day as a holiday and name it something else.  Indigenous People's Day is as good an idea as any.

I'm told it is highly likely to pass in New York.  The tax dollars brought in have make it acceptable to many who opposed it in the past.

But how far back do we go to determine who the indigenous people are? If we go back far enough, nobody was here until some folks crossed an ancient land bridge from Russia.

With Vermont legalizing it, it is now 9 states and the district of Columbia.

Also, as noted, NY will likely legalize soon.  Michigan is voting on it this year. And even extremely conservative states like, OK, La, and Arkansas have legalized medical marijuana.

Most importantly, big business is now backing legalization with massive lobbying efforts, which means it is just a matter of time.

The people who bought Hostess brands and brought back Twinkies, will benefit greatly.  Arby's should add a deep fried Twinkie to the menu ASAP.

How about we give it a weird symbol and call it "The People Formerly Known as American Indians Day"?  Or "People that were living here when that Expletive Deleted Columbus First Showed Up Day"?  Or "Casino Owners excluding those in Nevada and New Jersey Day"?  Or "Everybody Except Republican White Heterosexual Males Day"?

In Cleveland, they call it May Day.

So was at the gym wearing MU gear, doing a warm up set with 135 on the bench.  A guy comes up with a Depaul shirt on and asks if he can work in with me.  I agree, and he kind of arrogantly says, "you mind if I add some weight, this is a bit light for me".

I agree, we up the weight to 185 for him to struggle through a set of six.  Proudly puffing out his chest emblazoned with Depaul, he starts to pull weights off for me.

I pull the 25lb weight off my side too, than grab more weights to increase it to 245.  Proceed to hammer out a set of 8 like its nothing.  As he looks at me a bit embarrassed/defeated, I reply...that's how we roll at MU.

Normally I would have done another warm up set at 185, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to take down Depaul.

The odd part is, I live a long way from MU, so the likelihood of an MU fan and Depaul fan being in the same gym is near zero.

IMO, kind of against gym "protocol" to ask to work in then change the weight
