I have two daughters. One takes all expiration dates to mean "if you eat on or after this date, you WILL die a painful death." The other considers them just something else on the container to ignore.

Both are alive and well.

Everyone I know who has any level of expert knowledge in this tells me that the expiration date on a non-perishable food product is usually extremely conservative.  Often the date is more about taste than food safety.  My sister worked for Kroger, who requires expiration dates on any consumable product that it puts its private label on - including bottled water. I don't know about you, but if I am thirsty, I would not have any concerns about drinking expired water.

Yep - I eat expired stuff all the time. If it’s past the date, I just look and/or smell for any obvious problems. Things like water, chips or cereal, I wouldn’t  even check the date.

Yep, and unfortunately, a lot of perfectly good food is wasted.

My wife has a friend who is in charge of our local food pantry. The expiration date is one example of unnecessary food pantry waste, but there is also a disappointing amount based on  people’s poor food choices. My wife visited and saw a large stack of whole wheat bread next to an empty pallet. She commented about how great it was that the pantry stocks nutritious whole wheat bread instead of white bread.  She was told they get both…and that the empty pallet was from white bread that everybody took. She was told much of the whole wheat bread would end up getting tossed, because nobody who goes to the pantry chooses that. She also learned about fresh produce going bad while frozen meals fly off the shelves. Unfortunate.

    my rule-any poultry, fish or mayo based product hits the DOA date, gets tossed...

       however, there was this time when-
     
      my older brother drove truck for a number of years hauling everything from gasoline to lumber to everything consumable.  one incident, he had truck with a load of frozen turkeys break down.  i don't remember the critical temperature the compartment had to be held to, but it dipped a few degrees below that-they had not thawed out mind you, however, the mandated "scientific" temperature was breached.  ALL of the turkeys had to be thrown out.  well he brought a bunch of them home, still rock solid frozen.  no one that i recall suffered any ill-effects.  these could have very simply been given away to a food pantry or what have you, but the company's attorneys would have chit their panties
