Kinda unrelated: I watched The Irishman across 6 viewings. I'm glad I did. 1 uninterrupted attempt would have resulted in a much more negative impression of the film.

The best thing about The Irishman was how much it mocked the viewers without the majority of them knowing they were being mocked

We waited until it came out on Apple+ and watched it over 3 nights. So we could get up, stretch, grab a bite, watch other stuff in between, etc, and I'd guess it made the slower moments less snooze-inducing for us.

I wouldn't have wanted to sit in a theater 4 hours for that or any other movie. And sure, a half-hour could have been edited out of it easily. That's the case with most long movies. The last episode of this season's Fargo could've been 10 minutes long!

We enjoyed the movie more than you did, obviously. I got a lot out of it.

Almost every movie now days is way longer than they need to be

I am far from a expert film maker and most movie I go to I can walk out and immediately pinpoint 15-20 minutes that was not needed.

Lol, nah that was easily the most boring movie Scorsese has made.  Was it visually striking and well acted?  Sure, but holy moly the story was a snooze fest.  Also, in no way did that need to be three hours long.

ymmv but I think if this film is made by a no name director it doesn't get a single Oscar nod outside of acting.

American Fiction, on the other hand, was amazing.

I read the book over the weekend and it was quite good.  I am hesitant to see the movie based on a few reviews.

My parents have it.  Great for soccer, their original programming is actually pretty solid, and there are a bunch of other things they have from a variety of networks.   Wouldn't be the highest priority, but I see a ton of value in it.

Speaking of paramount+ - I'm usually not a big series guy becauase I don't keep up with the commitment. Only couple I've done soup to nuts the past few years are GoT and the Crown*.  But I had some time to truly burn Friday and did a few eps of Halo.  For turning your brain off, I don't hate it at all.  Its not 'good' by any means but its sticks close enough to the source material and is fun enough to work for me. Like I don't really care about any of the characters but I still look forward to watching another ep. I'll probably finish the season and maybe even see what S2 brings.

*Almost through the final season.  Its a bit of a labor of love at this point. I thought it was the best show on TV during some of the earlier seasons, but this ain't that.

I continue to love Oldman and many of the characters, but dear god, the plot was preposterously stupid, particularly the last two episodes.

TLDR: 4 misfit MI5 "agents" kill off 20+ mercenaries with assault weapons and grenades who wear body armor (which apparently came from Walmart, as it doesn't stop a single bullet.)

I don’t disagree that it was a bit far fetched but I don’t think misfits is totally fair.  The whole point of the crew at Slough House is they are all talented but flawed.

River was a hot shot agent from a prestigious MI5 lineage but had a public FUBAR.

Louisa messed up a tail.

Marcus was recruited to be a Dog but had gambling issues.

Part of the underlying theme is how talented agents make a moderate mistake and are black balled indefinitely.  But there are tons of inferior MI5 agents still at the Park who have played the political game better despite being less skilled or talented, like Spider.

I don’t agree that the fire fight result was a bit far fetched.  But other than Duffy, most of the “mercenaries” were just faceless storm troopers and the agents, as mentioned, weren’t hacks or clueless, despite what the Park middle
management deemed them.  It’s not like Standish and Ho gunned down 20 Duffys

Agree. Great show. But, went away from what makes it great and those scenes were just action flick like.

Thanks for the collective Scoop rec of Slow Horses.  The wife and I just finished the first season.  We were looking for this genre of show and Gary Goldman is as great as always.

The Greatest Night in Pop - a documentary about the making of We Are the World - is worth a watch on Netflix. Especially for those of us of a certain vintage (although my 22 year old enjoyed it too).
