The Bulls Worst Case Scenario Just Happened

Wow!! This is worse than losing 60 games.

Nikola Mirotic Reportedly Hospitalized After Fight with Bobby Portis at Practice
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2739275-nikola-mirotic-reportedly-hospitalized-after-fight-with-bobby-portis-at-practice

Chicago Bulls forwards Bobby Portis and Nikola Mirotic were reportedly involved in a "serious altercation" at practice Tuesday that sent Mirotic to the hospital.

According to The Vertical's Shams Charania, Mirotic—who recently returned to the Bulls on a two-year, $27 million deal—will be out indefinitely as a result.

Citing league sources, Charania reported Mirotic was transported to the hospital after a "shoving altercation during practice ended with an alleged cheap shot from Portis to Mirotic’s face."

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Mirotic "suffered a fractured bone in his face," and Charania reported the 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined for the "foreseeable future."

The Chicago Tribune's K.C. Johnson followed up and said Portis is likely to miss "a few weeks."

CSN Chicago's Vincent Goodwill added Mirotic was evaluated for a possible concussion and provided additional details:

This has been three years in the making, a source said. Mirotic has broken bones in his face, apparently instigated, and Portis punched him
6:07 PM - Oct 17, 2017

In 70 appearances a season ago, Mirotic averaged 10.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game on 41.3 percent shooting from the field and 34.2 percent from three.

On a rebuilding Bulls team, Mirotic was the favorite to open the season as the team's starting power forward.

Without his stretch-4 stylings, the Bulls will be left with Portis—who could now conceivably face internal discipline—and rookie Lauri Markkanen as their primary options alongside center Robin Lopez.

Ha. Don't think this is necessarily a bad thing though.

I assumed based on the title of the post that Paxson and Forman received long-term extensions.

Although I do have Mirotic on my fantasy team.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/21056581/nikola-mirotic-chicago-bulls-indefinitely-altercation-teammate-bobby-portis

The players had been talking trash to one another in practice, jawing back and forth before those exchanges escalated into a physical encounter, league sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Mirotic charged at Portis twice before Portis threw a punch and connected with Mirotic's face, league sources said. Mirotic dropped to the floor and lay there for several minutes before getting up, league sources said.

Mirotic was taken to the hospital and released later Tuesday, sources said.

The Bulls announced that surgery is likely for Mirotic.

i did not see porters punch however, the first thing that came to mind was kermit washington's punch that almost killed rudy tomjanovich.  i saw that one live on t.v. and it was shocking to say the least.  it also ruined 2 careers

Bob Lanier punched Bill Lambier squarely in the face once. How Lambier survived is a mystery.  His face seemed to pop in and pop back out.

I thought there was a plane crash or something. Should have known better.

Hope Mirotic ends up being ok, though it sounds like he was the aggressor here.

From a basketball standpoint, won't hurt the Bulls.  Mirotic had a knack for playing well against bad teams and going off in games that didn't matter.  Probably the anti-tank sort of player.  Don't give the Bulls brass anymore reason to not tank this year.

Remember when the Bucks got the number 1 pick and used it on Kent Benson in 1977?

1 punch from Kareem ended his confidence completely but at least the Bucks eventually got Lanier for Benson.

If a scrap between two backup-quality is the "worst-case scenario" for the Bulls this year, they're going to have a surprisingly good season.
With the exception of Niko's face, this actually could work out fine. Or better then fine.
It makes them worse, leading to hopefully a higher draft pick in what's shaping up as a stellar draft, and opens up more playing time for Baby Dirk.

For the Bulls first eight games this is a double knock out. Portis has been suspended by the team; and  Mirotic is injured

...with 3rd string PF Finnish rookie Lauri Markkanen (acquired in JB trade from Wolves) to start in their stead....leave it to a Finn to stay out of the battle and win the war.

I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Makes you wonder...

If Bobby Portis of all people can throw a haymaker, imagine what would have happened if they let that fight between Mo Lucas and Darryl Dawkins go. Those were some bad dudes.

You would not think this if you used your own money for tickets.

I'd argue that's the persons fault for buying Bulls tickets in the first place.

This incident was the best possible thing that could have happened to the Bulls on a few different levels.

Jordan punched Kerr in the face during practice 20 some years ago.  So championship?
