Duke, Coach K, and Wojo
« on: August 18, 2017, 01:49:15 PM »
https://www.theringer.com/2017/8/18/16165584/coach-k-duke-blue-devils-marvin-bagley-one-done

This article from the Ringer is predicting that Coach K will be out at Duke within the next five years and speculates a little on his replacements.  One of the key points is that before K adopted the one-and-done model from Calipari about 4-5 years ago, it was pretty clear that Wojo was the succession plan, but that now recruiting guru Jeff Capel might be the front-runner.

Thoughts?

Stevens. Brad Stevens.

He was mentioned in the article, because "every coaching search article has to mention him."  I'd be shocked to see him go to Duke.

My only thought is that Wojo is our coach and I'm glad.

Five years from now, thanks mostly to Wojo, we might be the superior program!

(Then again, we might not be but we'll still be kickin' arse!)

Wait a minute, a 70 year old man might not be at his job in 5 years?  That's insane.

Wojo will only coach at Duke if he gets Herro to uncommit from UW and come to MU as well as having the biggest necks in the NCAA. Also a major key in Wojo going to Duke will be whether or not he is able to put recruit Wisconsin for Wisconsin players.

Because it's not the NBA.

Because it's not the NBA.

In addition, there are wide-spread reports that he never liked recruiting, the NBA pays more, coaching at the highest level, and as iconic as Duke might be, the Boston Celtics are about 10,000 times more so. Plus, no connections to Duke, K, or anything to do with that school.

Really, the only reason he was ever rumored as a possible Duke candidate is because he's clean-cut and white.

Yet the rumored front runner to take over is...African American.

Yeah, why would he leave what is being done at the Celtics. A major NBA team ready to get back to the finals.

If Coach K retires, I can promise you this about Duke:

1) Their search will be national.

2) Nobody who has a strong track record will be ruled out.

3) If Wojo is a leading candidate, we will have won at least one more national title for Marquette.

4) At this level, Duke has learned from a number of other schools who hired former assistants who looked good on paper but could not measure up. UCLA, North Carolina, us all stand out here.

5) You heard it here first: Coach Wojo is here for a long, long time to come!

And in that article, they essentially dismiss Stevens in a throwaway comment. I'm saying that's the reason he's been rumored to that job for years, because of perceptions people have had since the days when Laettner and Hurley were seen as the face of the program.

#3 just isn't true. Wojo certainly could be a leading candidate without winning a NC at MU.

#5. I've said before, there will come a coach at MU who realizes the special opportunity and honor it is to coach at MU. I am starting to believe that is Wojo.

Yes, Duke, because of Coach K, has a tremendous reputation for basketball.  Duke, by many ratings systems, is also a Top 10 university with about 14,800 students.

Marquette likewise has a great basketball tradition - not as successful as Duke's, but it is a basketball school.  Marquette ranks in the 80s of top universities.   Not bad. Top 100 universities  against 1000s is pretty good.

Size-wise, Marquette has about 12,000 students.   So..... Wojo is used to the size of the university compared with Duke, and Marquette has a pretty good reputation for quality and tradition.   These are things that could make him more comfortable at Marquette.

Then again, who knows.  The coaching biz is tough to call.

I suspect most, if not all, of the leading candidates for the Duke job will not have won a national title.

I just don't think you will see a bunch of high-level coaches who are successful in their current situations to line up to replace a legend.
