I got a text that showed a "best free throw percentage" award... hopefully my buddy photoshopped it or we've got some serious education to provide.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Wojo winked and said "Free throws matta" as he handed the award to Rowsey.

Actually not.  Wojo went through the roster at length detailing the contributions.  I concur with the choice for this season.  The affair was rather lengthy and Wojo was the most animated I've seen him in public speaking and he spoke quite a bit last night. Had a good line in saying that the team had a lot of offense and, with a smile,  said "just enough defense".. That got a good chuckle from the crowd.

Father William Kelly Team Morale Award should have been Deon.  He was almost always the most animated on the bench.

Madison Fant only hit the easy notes.

Interesting that Haanif won the Best Defensive Player Award since he was basically benched late in the season in favor of more offense.

Arbitrary endpoints help your cause there since the 36 minute game is the first in that series.  10, 11, 13, 3, 15, 7 is how he closed out the season.

Not benched, but diminished role.

Ordinarily, I would agree that it is weak to not name a team MVP.    Not this past season.     Any choice you make will be rebutted.     Markus.... but what about the slow start and no-shows in conference?       Jjj..... how do you have as an MVP somebody who gets a DNP-CD in a huge game MU wins?   Sam....but what about the games where he scored little to none?     Luke..... but Mr. Sand-knit is a jackass and it just isn't worth the trouble.      Rowsey..... how many games was he a non-factor?    Matt.... seriously?    Haanif.... glued to the bench at the end.     Katin.... too erratic.     Duane.... too many games when he was a non-factor.

At the end of the day, there was not a single player who could be relied on every game.    There was not a single player who made his teammates better.   There was not a single player head and shoulders above his teammate.

I agree with your breakdown -- but there is no law requiring an MVP award at the banquet.  Maybe just not do that one this year.

At least they let him attend.  Steve Taylor was a no-show the year that he transferred, they left his name off of the program, and his name was never mentioned.  IIRC, it hadn't even been announced that he was leaving yet.  It was very strange.

Nice cherry-picking but...

First 26 games: 29.0 mpg, high of 45 min, low of 21

Last 6 games: 9.8 mpg, high of 15 min, low of 3

When a players' minutes drop by two-thirds, I'd consider that basically benched.

Speaking of old news...

You're arguing semantics.

You consider "late in the season" to be more than the final 6 games. That's fine. Your assertion that I should have considered "late in the season" to be more than the final 6 games is ridiculous.

Haanif's Second Half PT in the final 6 games...
St J: 0 min
PC: 6 min
X: 3 min
Creighton: 0 min
SHU: 5 min
SC: 1 min

In the second half of the final six games of the season, Haanif did not even get off the bench twice and played just 1:15 in the NCAAT game in order to get JJJ an ovation. To me, when a player goes from starting 25 of 26 games and playing nearly 30 minutes/night to averaging under 10 min off the bench and plays sparingly, if at all, after halftime, I consider that basically benched. We define things differently. It's like if I said it was chilly outside and you called me a liar because you believe it's brisk.

I don't care about your semantical tiff with JayBee but when I see those numbers it reinforces the sad fact that Cheatham "progressed" from almost irreplaceable (playing the most minutes of anyone) early on to a guy only being used in emergencies at the end. First to last among players on scholarship - if not unprecedented, nearly so.

When I see TAMU (and others) assume Cheatham went through nothing but a "slump" that Haanif will certainly bounce back from I envy their faith but seriously question their judgement.

Never said it was a slump. Never said he would bounce back. Said he was overvalued after his freshman year and is undervalued as of right now. The difference in minutes between his freshman year isn't about his performance. Its about the availability of better options to replace him. Haanif got less minutes but was more efficient in those minutes in everything other than shooting.

Cheatham's advanced numbers were very similar to what they were his freshman year. The only thing that changed was that we had better players in front of him.

Where you see the dramatic cut in minutes is essentially where Wojo gave up on this team ever being respectable on defense and decided that the best path to winning would be to outscore opponents.  Unfortunately for Hannif, his talents as an individual defender weren't going to help the team since there were so many other defensive weaknesses to exploit.  There are a lot of ways for Hannif to become a contributor again.  Although, if we do not see any dramatic defensive improvement, he is going to have to become a much better offensive player and cut out the turnovers.

+1 Hanni needs to develop his right hand and pull up jumper.

I thought Katin's speech on how avoiding Juco's and focusing on kids who come to MU for academics was the best part of the night.

If he really said that, I am really happy Katin is not involved in recruiting.

I am in the camp that says Haanif will have a positive turnaround in his performance his junior season. He is a very good kid and will put the hard work in to improve the areas he had trouble in. He as much said so in one of his own tweets.

Based on your views, How do You think his chances of returning close to his first year numbers, percentage wise 10%?  5%?  Thanks for sharing.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Haanif's important numbers (efg%, Orat, etc.) were all that good as a freshman - and as a freshman, he had both Luke and Henry walling off driving lanes for him. He's a mediocre 3 point shooter on a team with a lot of good to great ones. He has no mid range games, doesn't possess great quickness, is all left hand and finishes below the rim. Chance that he'll ever be an average Big East starting perimeter offensive player? I'd say slim.

On the "non skill" stuff, he fares better. He works/tries exceptionally hard on both ends, will be our only decent returning perimeter defender and he runs the court well.

I don't know what niche he'll carve out for himself. Anything from a bench player/occasional defensive sub to a starter who mostly defers on offense is possible.

Agree.  He has the work ethic and can get to the hoop.  Work on the shot (especially the midrange), and he can be a solid contributor.

He is not as good as Sam and Markus, but he is a pretty good three point shooter. My complaint about him in the past was that he would pass up open threes and drive to the basket. I somewhat thought that  he always drove, because that is what Wojo wanted him to do.

In a perfect world, I would love to see Cheatham redshirt next year. I would say there's a 98% chance it won't happen, but him dedicating a full year to driving with his right and developing a pull up jumper could really help him. Maybe he can get it in an offseason, but I'm doubtful.

Of course, that would mean a lot of Rowsey, Anim, and Elliott at the two, maybe even Cain. Not necessarily a bad thing, but definitely a lot of unknowns in that mix.

Even with Cheatham on the roster, you will still see a lot of Rowsey, Anim and Elliott at the two.  If Wojo gets a grad transfer #2, then count it as over recruiting the young fella. Cheatham digressed to just a poor level of play and he will be fighting an uphill battle.  But, I hope he improves because he has the required height at his position, especially for defensive purposes.  His previous tweet regarding his off season efforts has some belief he knows his problem and can work it out.

I wouldn't expect for Elliott to see the floor a whole lot next season.

Also, positions (i.e. 1s, 2s, etc) mean less and less in today's game. Teams basically have perimeter players and bigs.

When Traci Carter was on the roster the ball was handed to Haanif.  Do you really think the chosen one will ever red shirt?  Dude has 9 lives and not one will be spent on a 5th year.
