Bars vs. grocery stores: Mapping America’s beer belly
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/govbeat/wp/2014/06/03/bars-vs-grocery-stores-mapping-americas-beer-belly/?utm_term=.254e1f1bc2c5

Drive down the street in Milwaukee or Madison or Marinette, Wis., and you’re more likely to pass a bar than a grocery store. In fact, in most Wisconsin counties, you’re almost three times more likely to find a place to down a beer than you are to find a place to stock up on groceries.

That’s according to this great new map worked up by FlowingData.com, a Web site that specializes in all kinds of nifty visualizations:

Not shocking at all.  The ratio in a place like West Allis might well be 10:1.

Yeah but when the churches started closing down we just turned them into more bars. So now it's four bars on every corner!

I'm kind of a lightweight now, compared to my MU daze. Of course, the beer I prefer now is much more potent, too.

I had 6 pints Saturday. That is at least 3x as much as I usually have in an outing, and twice as much in one of the "big drinking" days I have every few months.

I had 3 pints during the MU-UW watching party and a friend was driving me home because my wife had some stuff to do. But we stopped at an establishment just a couple miles from where we live for one more. And ended up having 3.

We Ubered home.

It will be a long time (if ever) that I "fest" that much again. Maybe after the Panthers win the Super Bowl!

The only issue I have with this data is what constitutes a "bar" for categorization purposes.  Many states have requirements on the number of liquor licenses that can be issued to "bars" or "taverns" but is less restrictive on issuing licenses to restaurants...  Utah has relaxed their laws, but it used to be that you couldn't serve alcohol unless you also served food, so in order to get around the law, the retail purveyors of alcohol would either brand themselves as "private clubs" or restaurants.  But here's the kicker, some of these "restaurants" in Utah had a very limited menu consisting of a few appetizers, quick-order sandwiches, etc. (someone once joked to me that Utah led the world in "chips & salsa" orders per capita) but the primary draw to these establishments remained alcohol.. in Wisconsin & Illinois, you find many of these same types establishments with similar menus/offerings, but liquor licenses quotas in Wisconsin do not discriminate as to what kind of business you are (unless you're in a resort area like the Dells or Door County) and in Illinois are decided at the municipal level, so there's no need for these businesses to disguise what they are.

In other words, what constitutes a "bar" in Wisconsin and Illinois is often called a "restaurant" (or something else) in many other states.  Travel through the bible belt and you'll see more gas stations with bars than you do up north... now you know why.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.
