March Madness - the video game
« on: March 25, 2019, 04:44:17 PM »
Every year around this time I get a deep-seated desire to play a college bball video game. And, every year since 2009, I am reminded about how stupid our world is.

I just want a college bball game. And, preferably, not from EA.

Makes me sad.

End.

nba2k gave us that little taste a few editions ago (2k17?) where you could play the last games of your college career, from a choice of 10 colleges, before the draft. made me hopeful another edition of college hoops was coming out, but still waiting for that to become a reality.

So, so, stupid. Everyone wants these games, but they aren't allowed because it would mean compromising in other areas.

how were they allowed to come out with the college game you're talking about?

I played the hell out of college hoops 2k8 and ea college hoops 2011? idk. yeah I miss those. wish they would make another one and somehow work around the copyright BS but still have somewhat accurate rosters for major teams. I wanna drop 50 on Murray St with markus lol. Sadly this will never happen

I put the disc in for College Basketball 2K3 two years back and played it for a few hours. Still eminently playable. That arc of games was very solid (all in the College Hoops game lineage). Far better than the other attempts, IMO.

Around that time I also learned that this is the rarest GameCube game by far as they almost immediately stopped production on it after being released. I just don't think these games sold well beyond the hardcore fans. I'm sure that licenses/etc played a huge role as well in sinking these franchises. Which sucks.

Paradigms shift in gaming and who's to say that 5 years from now, the model won't become viable again in some form.

it was just 10 college teams built into in the NBA game: https://www.sbnation.com/2016/8/26/12659646/college-teams-nba-2k17-kansas-arizona-illinois-oklahoma

I'm not sure how they were allowed to do that, just that they did.

I would assume they got copyright permissions from each of the 10 schools and used fictitious rosters not based on any actual players.

Would you have bought the game because of the names on the front of the jersey or the names on the back of the jersey.....that's one of the issues in play.

Front.

Because it's very easy to create a database for the back.

Mans not wrong. Exactly what they do in 2k8.

Btw pick up a copy of college hoops 2k8. Still very playable. Best college feel game ever. They did a great job getting the college feel down.

Also some guys at operation sports make rosters for the game still.

Agreed.  The argument made was that people wanted realism, actual rosters, etc, and that is where it got sideways with the notion athletes should get a cut.  I agree, I would buy it for the front of the jersey, but not all agree.

For those that play NBA 2k...there are folks that make college rosters:

EX:

Details:

Are you able to download current options off older games. Like if I have 2k17, am I able to download 2019 college rosters?
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

There was actually a real player on each team. They were players who graduated or hired an agent in real life so they were paid for their likeness.

I remember playing the last ea sports version of the game.
