What's the Weirdest MU Gear You Own?
« on: February 02, 2017, 05:16:51 PM »
I saw this today from Allen-Edmonds... even ignoring the price, I don't even know what to say to these (although A-E must do some pretty good "fan business" to keep coming out with these types of offerings).

But it got me thinking... between the A-E kicks and Jimmy Mac's fabulous check pants, who else has that MU-something in your closet that makes your spouse or kids cringe?  [If you have them, pictures would be spectacular.]

I suppose mine is my very first Fanatics t-shirt... to say the thing is tattered and torn would be a severe understatement.  All of the screen printing has pretty much worn off, and frankly, one more cycle through the wash and the thing will probably fall apart.  Nevertheless, I just can't bring myself to get rid of it.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I still have this old MU athletic towel that Rick Majerus handed me....it's a little crusty and still smells awful after all these years...a picture would not work well as the MU logo seems smudged.

LOL...pretty sure I'm getting a pair of those for my birthday (to go along with the Al McGuire style blazer my wife is getting me). May need to convince her to let me wear it early for National Marquette Day...birthday is Feb 22, last home game I can attend are Xavier on the 18th and St. John's on the 21st.

Here they are. Definitely not for every day wear. However, I do enjoy breaking them out at the office as tournament play approaches. Sadly, they haven't made many appearances recently.  :'(

Not apparel.  But when I was a freshman they used to just hand the big heads out in the student section.  One day mid season all student ticket holders get an email from MUBB (if I'm remembering correctly) saying that you would need to hand over your student ID to get a big head and then your ID would be returned to you when you returned the big head at the end of the game because the Dwyane Wade big head had gone missing.

Fast forward to later that school year and I go to a friend of a friend's apartment and what's hanging from their wall?  The Dwyane Wade big head.  Wanted to steal it from them so badly, but didn't.

We had Print World print those off, then we had to cut them to shape. I'm shocked how long some of those lasted.

I have two Loudmouth golf skirts I wear to games.  One of them is the paint splatter pattern, and the other is the blue and gold swirls.  Carolyn Kieger approached me once and asked me where she could get one.

At a game last year, Jimmy Mac and I were both wearing gold polo shirts and the paint splatter bottoms (pants on Jimmy Mac, of course).  I tweeted a picture of myself and tagged him, and he told me to come down at halftime for a picture.  I use it as my Facebook profile picture a lot.

And so far I have never seen anyone else wear the golf skirt at games, so if you ever notice a middle-aged blonde wearing one, yeah, that's Warriorchick, all right.

It would be interesting to know if they ever have any of these in their little outlet store in Port Washington.

Also, Dr. Lovell tweeted out a picture of the Allen Edmonds he wore to his inauguration ceremony - they were navy with gold laces.

A friend of mine has blue and gold Topsiders that he wears to games...I haven't been able to find them online.  If anyone knows where I can buy some, let me know.

I've got a T-shirt with an MU fist holding a plucked chicken by the neck and on the chicken it says Notre Dame.  My roommates DAD who was a domer "was offended" by that shirt

Those AEs are fly as hell. For the fellas that have em, what is the best MU color combo?  Since they don't let you customize on the site its hard to guess.  I'm guessing the primary needs to be the blue - go regular blue or navy? Is yellow more the MU color or does the gold match pretty well?

No way. I saw you recently. I'll have to say hello next time.

To be back on topic: My "weirdest" (not really to me) Marquette related gear is the extensive collection of blue and gold bow ties that I usually try and wear to games. Looking to expand into the Stan Johnson world of blazers as well.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Took some screenshots from A-E website... best I can tell, top to bottom: Blue/Yellow, Navy/Yellow, Navy/Gold

Gold is way too brown... won't work at all.  But Blue vs. Navy is probably a matter of personal choice... the Navy looks much closer to MU's scheme, but you could probably get away with Blue, which would allow for additional use on retro days at Miller Park.

I'm guessing from 7703's pic that Navy/Yellow is the preferred combo.  Truth be told, now they're starting to grow on me.

actually I just remembered the weirdest gear. It's from 2010 when we were ranked the top Catholic party school. It's a shirt that says "we are... Playboy's no1 catholic party school" and Has 1881 and the ones are beer bottles. I'll get a pic when I'm home next.

The shoes in the pic I attached above are navy and yellow. The gold looks more like Purdue's gold to me, not anything that I've ever actually seen MU associated with.

Giant Marquette warriors arena banner from the one year they played in the same conference with Detroit. Was found stashed away in an old closet. Takes up half of the wall in any room.

Trend Blackledge, Craig Kuphall, and Scott Merrit game worn jerseys.

Also have a West Virginia/Georgetown game ball from the 2008 Big East Tournament. Had the game before Marquette/Pittsburgh.

Also had a chance at getting this unattended item (see attachment).

What an awful thread. I've done well in recent times of not buying tons of MU gear. This is going to push me back into the obsession, I fear.

Those Blue and Gold AE's may get purchased this morning. Crap.

One of my favs that I bought while actually a student was a mesh basketball warmup.. simple, "Marquette Warriors"

Should have gotten a bigger size, tho
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Of course we did.  I was actually surprised it was still going on when my kids enrolled.  I thought for sure that by now, 18-year-olds would have thought it was lame.

On a side note, Chi-town, how often do you run into people in England that have actually heard of Marquette?

Never, but on that same note I havent run into anyone that has heard of Northwestern either so not the best measuring stick.

Never, but on that same note I havent run into anyone that has heard of Northwestern either so not the best measuring stick.

This is so true. I've tried explaining it to my cousins but they think it's stupid and compare it to the smaller club teams.

On a side note, Chi-town, how often do you run into people in England that have actually heard of Marquette?

Not Chi-Town and not currently overseas, but in 2011, I went for a run near Buckingham Palace with an MU T-shirt and was stopped twice, once by a fellow MU grad and once by a Georgetown grad. It was a weird rush to have people recognize MU and was never duplicated.

And back then, there was a decent MU Alumni Club that hosted NMD. Over 20 people showed up, which I thought was pretty fantastic.

Orientation staff. Did you guys have the square dance back in the day?

Holy crap Chitown.  Is there anything your generation ever did that was even close?  We used to have giant Block Parties with free beer for all.  We used to have genuine rock concerts every Friday afternoon.  We used to legally roll half barrels into McCormick on Saturday afternoon.  Please.

I almost forgot.  I found these vintage blazer buttons on Ebay and I made glow a pair of cufflinks out of them.  Pretty cool if I do say so myself.

Have some patience, FFS.

When I was in Ireland in 2003, fresh off the FF appearance, I wore my gold Marquette hoodie just about everywhere.  At the Cliffs of Mhothair, I actually had a couple people come up to me and mention the basketball team; however, it was quite clear they were American students studying abroad.

But the highlight was while I was taking some pictures in Cobh outside of St. Colman's, I was approached - as it turns out - by a French nun who just walked up and started talking to me about Père Jacques; at the time I was only a few years removed from six years of HS and college French, but I could only describe my proficiency at the time as "excruciatingly conversational."  So next time you find yourself explaining to an ignorant American that you're not from Michigan (presumably in English), think about ol' Benny trying to explain to a French nun that he's not a Jesuit seminarian (en français).

Still have the hoodie, by the way... couple of holes in it - not as tattered as my other early 00's threads - but it's seen way too much to ever be retired.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I have those blazer buttons!  I had 'em sewn onto my best blue blazer.  I had the sleeve buttons put on too.

Violent Femmes for free. The mugrack for lunch, a sandwich and a beer out of an extensive beer menu. Concerts at the varsity theater and a world series. Such great times!

Oh hell, yeah.  And just in time for Saturday, no less.

Definitely the Navy/Yellow combination.  I wasn't sure about these when I first saw them, but decided to take a chance and I am ecstatic right now.  Then again, it could just be the VOCs emanating from the dye on the shoes that's making me happy right now.

I have a Bursars Bypass certificate from the days we would register for classes in the Old Gym.  Ah, the 1980s.   I feel sad for the folks writing those checks now.

I still have this old MU athletic towel that Rick Majerus handed me....it's a little crusty and still smells awful after all these years...a picture would not work well as the MU logo seems smudged.
That sir, is disgusting...and weird!

Is the Seagrams still in the bottle, or did O'Neill slosh it down first?

At the game yesterday, I found out that MarquetteStyle.com, the purveyor of Jimmy Mac's crazy new pants and the Al McGuire-style obnoxious sportcoats, is giving away a $500 prize package if you like them on Facebook.  Worst case scenario, you get a 20% coupon.

You can find it here:

https://www.facebook.com/marquettestyle/

I saw several of the sportcoats at the game on Saturday.
Have some patience, FFS.

The most unique MU item I own is probably my copy of Goin' Uptown': Marquette's March to Madness and Return to the Final Four (Story of the 2003 Final Four team, which was my freshman year at MU). Rick Majerus wrote the book's foreword. I got the chance to meet Coach Rick when I was in law school at SLU, and Rick was the head coach of SLU. Got him to sign the book "GO MU AND SLU TOO! ALWAYS A WARRIOR, RICK MAJERUS." Majerus passed about a year after I met him.

I also own a pair of MU Warrior Cufflinks that I got as a Groomsman gift for standing up in my brother's wedding. I wear them to almost every Marquette wedding, and wore them to my swearing-in ceremony to the Wisconsin State Bar. Gotta wear some blue and gold in Madison!
