Preseason Rankings already
« on: September 21, 2016, 01:43:51 PM »
Way to early for these.  Closed door scrimmages are going to effect these rankings and the seed lines come March Madness.

I'm just not sold on Butler. I see them as 5th or 6th in the league and a bubble team, not a protected seed. I know Seton Hall lost Whitehead, but is that less of a loss than Jones and Dunham? Not sure why they are getting so much preseason love.

4 Big East teams in poll is a good thing.

And to think GTown and MU aren't among those four ranked is both good and bad for the conference.

That was my first reaction too. They do have possibly the 2nd best player in the conference in Kelan Martin. Andrew Chrabasz is also quality. But I don't think savage is as good as people think. Ugly efficiency numbers.

Same reason Notre Dame gets it. Lots of lazy sportswriters. You can add to that proximity to New York City.

What strikes me is a down year likely for the Big 12 for the first time in their current iteration; only one team in the Top 20.

Also, only one SEC team in the top 25. Only 2 PAC 12 teams in the top 20. Only 1 AAC team in top 25.

Its an ACC, B1G, and BEast kind of season. Hell there are more WCC teams in the top 20 then the B12, SEC, and AAC.

They are, but what else do we have to talk aboUT for this season besides how the closed door scrimmages will effect our chances of an NCAA birth this year?

I would guess 2012-13?   (i.e. the last season where MU basketball was enjoyable to watch).

Not sure I get your point.  18 of those 25 teams finished in the top 25, and 22 of them reached the NCAAs in the top half of the draw (except Missouri, who was a 9 seed.)   Kentucky, Texas and Baylor (who won the NIT) are the exceptions.  Seems like if you were in these rankings the odds were that you were a very good team.

I know they missed on us, but pre-season rankings are a pretty good gauge of the talent you have.  I actually use the preseason rankings when picking the NCAA tournament as it helps identify talented but underachieving teams that may advance farther than their seed would indicate.

I meant in terms of how Marquette is going to do.  Some people on this board get so butthurt when MU gets its annual preseason snub.  Who cares????

Well in 2013-14 we were preseason top 25 and flopped in 2012-13, 2010-11, 2009-10 we barely got votes and were solid so I'll take not being in the preseason rankings

This gets me thinking.  The Elite 8 run was the last time we were truly playing meaningful basketball.  And I remember how excited I was the following November when we were projected to win the conference and unveiled the Conference Championship banner on opening night. Since then, a painful slide to irrelevance.  We need to do something about that this year.  Been simply too long.

This is very true.  While preseason rankings are irrelevant to actual season performance, it does give us an understanding of who should, or is expected, to perform when the games are played.  I really like the fact that 4 teams from the Big East are getting noticed (RESPECT!  ;)) before the the shoes have been laced up.  This will hopefully buI'll excitement and momentum for Marquette and the Big East.
