ZFB gave him the name in Jimmy's nickname thread. Let's use the wayback machine!

First ever mention of Jimmy F*cking Butler on muscoop. Also first mention of JFB: http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=16621.msg161756#msg161756

Henry Sugar was an early advocate, when everyone else was trying to get "The Jimmy" to stick

Second JFB mention: http://www.muscoop.com/index.php?topic=16882.msg165579#msg165579

I was surprised, but the NBC broadcast only had commercials between quarters.  Thanks McDonalds!

Kind of surprising that the IOC isn't a big fan of media timeouts.

I would be a force in China.  A fifth of the worlds population and that's the best they can come up with???

Incidentally, I was thinking the other day... we have a glut of hoops talent in the U.S., a nation which happens to include such possessions and territories as the USVI, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Marshall Islands, all of which have entries in the Olympics.

Other countries have "foreigners" competing under their Olympic flags... some with direct ties to the respective flag, some with distant ties.  But in all of these cases, it's sovereign countries having athletes who reside in other sovereign countries... why not put together a B-team with collegiate all-stars and have them compete under the Guam flag?  Or maybe the champion of the Paradise Jam gets to represent the USVI in the Olympics?

But seriously... why don't we have more people competing under the flags of our possessions and territories?  You give priority to the natives, and anyone else with US citizenship can fill in the vacancies.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

Maybe on a related note, why doesn't the University of Puerto Rico compete in NCAA basketball?  Don't they host a tournament, the San Juan Shootout or something like that?

They did compete D1 for a while, but traveling costs were too muchand there is no fan interest for the local U in basketball. Plus once the PR basketball league was deemed as a pro league it was over. Many of the local college players do play in the local league. The shootout is not hosted by the U and it is played in one of the two main basketball venues where the local pro teams play.

Can't really do what you are saying. To compete for PR you would either need to have been born here, have family ties (grandparents), lived here and nationalized sportswise and I believe it is after 5 years. If you are born here you can opt to compete for US then can't compete for PR's team. Most of the territories do have national basketball teams but you have to compete in regional tournaments to qualify.
These Olympics for example there were 2 spots already taken in the America's section, Brazil for being host country and US for being world champs & gold medalists. So I think that left like 2 or 3 spots open. These were given in the FIBA Americas tournament where PR missed to qualify even tho we had three NBA or former NBA players on the roster. Even Argentina needed to qualify, Venezuela was the big surprise. Then there was a special tournament the winner out of eight teams qualifies, we were runner up so no Olympics for our basketball team.

There are some silly eligibility rules. There was a cyclist for the Great Britain team who won a medal for with Kenya in 2012. Not Olympic related, but Diego Costs spent most of his life playing soccer for Brazil, only to start playing for Spain like 3 years ago.

What about swimming or gymnastics?  Or track and field?  Gabby mght have won bronze by competing for PR in the all around (hypothetically of course, since then she wouldn't be able to compete in the team competition).

The 5 year rule must be a national committee rule, right?  It would seem that the IOC doesn't have a say.

Hahahaha, ok I'll bite and keep playing. We have all those teams(checkers you name it). We have qualified mainly individually for gymnastics over the years and have had a couple of top 10 finishes. We have a top 3 world athlete in 400 mts hurdles, won bronze last Olympics and won the Diamond league (the NBA of track and field) a couple of years ago. Check that event out, right now some of the best athletes in the history of the sport are competing.
We have had people born here or of PR heritage compete for the US teams over the years, but once you go compete for US or PR you have to stay in that delegation so if you do not make it is very hard to get IOC clearance to go back.
Carmelo Anthony is of PR heritage. The year he played NCAA, the basketball delegation tried to convince him to play for the PR team but obviously no.  He currently owns the PR pro soccer team.
The "5 year" (not sure how many) rule is IOC, I believe national committees can increase but not decrease years. There are other rules like if you emigrate due to political persecution you will be allowed to represent the new host country.

USA down by 7 in first quarter. All points by Durant so far.  Team is ice cold. No JFB sightings yet.

JFB in for defensive toughness.  Just had a steal and basket, plus 1.  USA up by 15 with JFB in. Durant hot too.

Maybe it's Marquette bias, but Jimmy seemed to make a huge difference tonight. In the first quarter when Argentina was handling us, they brought Jimmy in and he just made plays. Keyed the big run that gave USA the lead they never relinquished. Great game for him.

Jimmy was a warrior tonight. He didn't score the most, but was just plain tough.

Loved the Jimmy/George lineup.  Coach K had seen enough of the entitled superstars giving up layups.

Can we just stop with the "entitled superstar" narrative?  Jimmy Butler has a nearly $100 million contract and lives in a River North condo worth something like $5 million.

Yes, his defensive focus is what Team USA needed yesterday and he played a great game.  Let's not make it more than that.

Sorry Sultan, I just don't see it your way.  Sure they all make huge money.  But for me it's an attitude thing.  Some guys down there 'appreciate it' more than others.  I count Jimmy in that camp.
