Markus Howard makes U.S. U17 World Championship team

On Tuesday afternoon, USA Basketball announced its 12-man team for the FIBA men's U17 World Championship, which will take place from June 23 to July 3 in Zaragoza, Spain.

Quite excited to see this kid play.

Congrats to all he has accomplished -- and will accomplish for the Warriors!

This is awesome.

Curious - is there any chance to play up or to try out for the U18 team?  May be better competition for him since he is making the jump.

It honestly may be more beneficial to play for the U17 just for recruiting purposes. Doubt he'd see much playing time with the U18.

U18 training camp starts today (same spot he's at).

HOWEVER, no, not better competition and worse timing.

The FIBA tourneys are on a rotating basis.. there aren't World Championships each year for each age group.

So, the USA U18 Nat'l Team will go to Chile in mid-July to play in the Americas Championship...

The U17 team is playing in Spain late June / VERY early July) for the WORLD Championship. This team earned the invite to the Worlds this year by winning the U16 c'hip last year. The U17 team includes a bunch of guys who were together for the U16 win last year (including Markus and Minnesota's own Gary Trent Jr.)

Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Great for him and great for MU- this is our program pacesetter - he doesn't need to be a world beater right away- but you get one or two recruits of this caliber every year and by years 2?3?4 you have a bunch of experienced mofos with their heads on straight , meanwhile that years new crop is doing everything it can to get in on the action, making it more likely one of them pops and contributes at a league team level; recipe for sustained success and the type of high ceiling you need to win championships

I agree with this analysis.

As part of the U17 team this year, that means he's turning 18 in 2017 and therefore eligible for the U19 World Championship next year.

It's at least possible.

So, in two years of recruiting, Wojo has signed a member of a USA basketball team each year.  I'm not sure that that ever happened under Al.  I am fairly certain that it hasn't happened since.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Well, you're not wrong.

But the U19 world championship was started in 1979, and the U17 world championship was only started in 2010.

Man, wait until Hani and the engine are seniors, Howard and Hauser are juniors and Brendan Bailey comes walking onto campus as a 20 year old freshman.

Thanks sounds like a fantastic opportunity.

And for those that may have interpreted my comment as a knock on Markus - it wasn't intended to be.  Was just more thinking about the age/strength of his new peers starting this fall and the sooner the better to play against them if it were an equal opportunity (which it isnt based on the above).

The great opportunity that DOES exist with the training camps overlapping is playing with and against the U18 team (well, they're down to 18.. still cuts to come for that group).

Tonight the U17 and U18 scrimmaged (refs, normal, controlled game). Watched a bit. Last day of practice was today.. time to head to Spain..

Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Egypt scored 3 points in the 3rd quarter, so I'm not going to take much from the game, but … Howard was fun to watch. It was pick-up ball, but he had some pretty passes and splashed in 3 threes in a row.

He really has a nice first step and it gets defenders to over pursue which gives him a nice ability to showcase that jumper. Silky smooth.

Considering that he won't be old enough to be drafted next year, Markus Howard really could turn into a great part of Marquette's future.

Makes sense...he is graduating a year early. I didn't turn 19 until I finished my first year of college.

US U17 leads Argentina, 59-24 at the half. Marquette bound Markus Howard with 10 points, Collin Sexton has 9 points and 3 rebounds.

You don't even need to graduate a year early to be that young. I turned 18 a week before I went to Marquette. Wasn't 21 until my senior year.

His birthdate is March 3, 1999.

If he would have been born just a couple months earlier, in December 1998, he would be eligible for the 2017 draft.  You have to be a year out of high school AND turn 19 the same calendar year as the draft.

We lived in downstate Illinois when I was little, and the cutoff for Kindergarten at the time was December 1. My sister's birthday was November 24, so she basically started school when she was 4 and a half.  She has always been the youngest person in her class, sometimes by several months.

I suppose she could have been held back a year, but my parents had 4 kids under the age of 6 at the time, so any they could get someone else to watch during the day was a bonus.

I believe in Milwaukee Parochial schools the cutoff date was 11/1 back then (it was a while ago!).  I beat the date by three days so I was always the youngest in my class.

Got you beat.  When I started school, the cutoff date in Connecticut was March 1.  I didn't turn 18 until January of my freshman year.  My roommate didn't turn 18 until February.  Back then, the drinking age was 18, and it was a pain in the neck for him getting into bars that first semester (maybe got in 50% of the time).  Fortunately, I looked a lot older and don't recall ever getting carded, although I still look older and that is no longer a good thing.

Fellow Connecticutian (as you know). I also started MU at 17. You have me beat, though, as I turned 18 about 6 weeks in.

There is a big difference between playing against experience college players and other 17 year olds.

My thought exactly.  Reminds me of when lots of folks thought we were a sweet sixteen team last year when we ran some poor Italian teams into the ground.

That being said, I think Markus will have a great four year career at Marquette.

I was 17 when I started at MU.  Turned 18 on 10/29 my freshmen year.

I was 17 when I started at MU also.  Turned 18 on 11/21 my freshmen year.

ZFB was 20 when he started, but he had to re-take fourth grade and spent a year after HS in a psych ward.

I thought everyone held their summer birthday kids back a year nowadays.  Especially boys.  You had to be one of the youngest freshman guys at Marquette.
Every single parent of boys under 12 i know has read Outliers.  I think Gladwell gets a kickback from the private schools for the extra year of tuition that book generates.

The parents that kill me are the ones that hold their kid back primarily because he will be bigger than the other kids in his grade, and therefore (in theory), more competitive in sports.
Have some patience, FFS.

Warrior - I was young for my class (turned 18 in late September of my freshman year) though not nearly as young as you. The kicker was that Milwaukee's drinking age was 21 when I was an MU student (1966-70) which meant I wasn't "legal" until almost a month into my senior year. Of course that never stopped any of us...

I think you are wrong about Wisconsin's drinking age. I believe it was 18 until the early '80s. One of the great things back in the day was that the drinking age in Illinois was 21, so all the 18-20 year old girls came to the Kenosha bars.

After my high school graduation, all my friends went to party at the bars. I went home cuz I was still 17.

I believe that up until 1972, the counties had the authority to set their own drinking age.  From about 1972 - 1984, it was 18.  1984 to 1986 it was 19.

Drinking age changed to 18, when I was in college. Part of the Vietnam war argument. Old enough to die for the country, but not old enough to drink. When I started college you became an adult at age 21, but that was changed to age 18 along with the right to vote.

This is correct. Milwaukee county was 21 until 1972. I was there from 66-70, drinking age was 21 the entire time. Madison, Kenosha, Manitowoc and most others were 18 - not Milwaukee.

Other counties were 18 for beer only. Had to be 21 for hard liquor.

Howard just had a hell of a set. 2 free throws. hustle play to cause a turnover. 3 pointer on the inbound. Kid is a GAMER.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Knox is unbelievable. He's also a top 10 recruit and has a offer from just about everyone.

This is true. Been fun watching this game. MH has been doing some nice work at the point in the second half. He's shown the 3 is lethal so they come in on him and when they do, he uses a nice first step to blow by them. Made a few nice cuts to the hoop.

If by 17 you mean 16.

0 assists, 3 turnovers... the turnover rate is up too high, but man his shooting has been ridiculous.

...heading into the finals:
Markus - ORtg 134.6, 2nd on team (Carte'Are Gordon w/136.8 and a 24.9% usage... arguable the top performer statistically.. 2018 F/C)... 63.9% eFG% w/52.2% 2FG & 48.4% 3FG... assist rate down to 18%.. turnovers up to 23%.
