Milwaukee Flag
« on: May 12, 2016, 08:42:52 AM »
I've always thought Milwaukee had a bad flag, and now there's a contest to create a new flag for the City of Milwaukee, and they have a couple cool entries.  My personal favorite is the blue and yellow slanted-check version of the Bavarian flag.  There's one that looks like the old MECCA floor also.

They can then get started on redesigning the Wisconsin state flag.

I'm shocked it hasn't been redone as a red flag with Bucky on it.

I assume one of the reasons for the change is that fact that there is a native American in the current flag that people have issue with.

If you had read the article it is outdated because it contains images like the Civil War battle flag of the Milwaukee regiment and County Stadium etc. It is considered a bad design being way too cluttered with images, a good flag design is simple enough that a child could draw it from memory and only uses 3-4 colors.

The old flag is amazingly, awesome in an unintentional way. Love the baby blue, navy, maroon, and gold as I seriously think the scheme works. But then they just add some much random stuff to the flag. Smoke stacks? That was still a good look in the 50's?

I might buy one for the apartment.

So, do you want to know how many people were involved in that flag's design?  Count the number of images on it.  That's the number.  Everyone got what they wanted.
Have some patience, FFS.

On the left margin of the article linked in the first post there is a "Related Photos" link that goes to a slide-show with a bunch -- the top 50, I think.  I didn't see the link at first and was wondering where people were seeing the flags they were commenting on.  I'm thinking maybe you didn't see the link either.  Or maybe you were just wondering about the five finalists.

This has more of a grid format with all of them laid out on several pages.

Any flag that doesn't include Marquette's campus, a mug of beer, a frozen custard cone and a couple dancing the polka is a fraud in my book!

Agreed.  Barley and gear speaks to the history of the city.

Los Angeles comes to mind...can't have a mission with a cross on it, aiinna?

I hope they keep the Native American imagery in the new flag.  It would be a nice honor and we're doing too many things to remove Native Americans from day to day lives.

Merritt....I laughed....it was great.

I suspect this is subjective.

You probably weren't a big fan of the old Tibet flag?

This one is simple....yes....this is the old Nevada flag....simple isn't always great either.

Personally, I always liked the Virginia flag

Roman Mars, from the podcast "99% Invisible", had a nice TED talk about city flags. The terrible Milwaukee flag and the great Chicago flag both make an appearance.
