Thomas Bilde appreciation thread
« on: August 19, 2015, 07:03:51 PM »
On his twitter he just thanked Marquette and Wojo for the time, seems like he enjoyed this trip as much as we enjoyed him. Feel free to post your favorite Blide moment here. Here's hoping Marquette or FS1 hires him. Why knows maybe we can get him to become a scooper.

With that just wanted to throw out a thank you to the awesome production team for a high quality stream with the only dropped stream being due to weather. Great job everyone.

Where did the connection with Thomas even come from?

And is there any reason to believe he would actually want to move to Milwaukee, WI to call basketball games for a living?  That's a big move for someone, especially if they have a family.

But he was awesome.

He was likely hired by the company that set up the travel arrangements.  He probably does it every summer for a different school.

At a minimum, if he's not a big head in the student section it will be a HUGE let down and confirmation that the current students are not as cool as the alum.  Which current student Scooper is going to make this happen?

"YOU!" -Broeker

Hear, hear!

Best line: "OOOOOOUUU!"

Crazy that he hadn't announced a game in English before this.

Hope we can push Fox into keeping their announcers home for a game or two during the season and let Thomas take the call.

Best part about Bilde? His Beowulfian need to give every player an epithet, or kenning, if you will.  Just like Grendel was "the midnight walker," "woodland walker," or "the bone crusher," Bilde's internal Danish lyricism compels him to adorn the players with something more than just their name:  HE isn't just "the train," he's "the Wisconsin kid."  Bilde was digging deep on this tour.

But most importantly, he didn't have to say "missed the no footer."

This team's ability to finish at the rim is pretty impressive.  The Engine, Duane, Henry, and Luke don't miss a whole lot around the bucket, regardless of how well it's defended.  Even Sandy finishes well at the rim.

First I must say that I'm a HUGE homer fan and I appreciate everything he does as part of the Marquette community.

Marquette basketball has somehow always managed to have something "quirky" about it.  From Al's wit to Rick's intensity to Dukiet's piano to Deane's scotch to Tommy's tan to Bert's  dysfunction and this includes Homer's witticissm's which were poorly preceded by George's "big word of the day".

Bilde has the quirkiness we seem to love, just like Homer does, but in an almost opposite way.  I know Homer reads this board and I hope he's not upset by the pro-Thomas threads...What we really enjoy is unique, different, and even strange comments and input from our program.  Thomas provided that very well during our boring summer interlude.  Thank you Thomas - and looking forward to a season with Homer.  The only thing better would be the two, side by side!

Y'all are interesting. Thomas was fine for a Danish speaker doing his first games in English. If I had to listen to choppy, non-descriptive commentary like that for a full season, I'd go nuts.

I appreciate the energy and enthusiasm he brought to a couple of scrimmages between two teams that he has no investment in whatsoever. Would I want him announcing games all season? No. Not my cup of tea personally. I like announcers who are not seen and barely heard.

He was perfect for this environment. Brought knowledge of the European players and style and had a ton of enthusiasm. I'd love to see him at an event like Madness or even doing a few games here or there, though I can't really see a European guy just "dropping in" for a game or two sporadically. If we ended up in Europe in another 4 years, I'd love to see him back in the booth for us.

I was entertained enough by him, but I don't get the seemingly cult following he has received..even though I assume it is at least half in jest.

He did a good enough job for never calling a game in english and not knowing our players at all prior to the trip.  But he was still very mediocre. Someone should get him to sign up for Scoop though...now that would be fun.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

This is exactly why I liked him.  He beats about 2/3rds of the yahoos that do our games at FS1 and ESPN just by knowing the players and speaking english.  Plus he was entertaining considering we were watching blow-outs in high school gyms.

This for me is a huge part of why I enjoyed him so much. He added something to the broadcast. That is often not the case with announcers that end up just regurgitating the same broadcast every other night. It made the games decisively 'European', provided context and knowledge on the opponents as well as the differences in the games, and definitely put some caring into his work (some of his Marquette trivia questions stumped Marquette's Deputy AD).

I don't see him ever being a regular over here, but I'd love him as a guest announcer at Madness some time and if we do any more European trips, he'd be a great pick to do our games again. His presence added fun to the games, even when we were up by 60.

True, but how much of that is due to our team's inability these past couple years to swish the ball and American refs never calling a double dribble? ;D

Thomas is a gem. Making up nicknames, getting stuff wrong, bringing the energy. He was like a cross between drunk Uncle Verne Lundquist and Kevin Harlin. I loved it!  Ill take Thomas over Homer and JMac any day. Those two are horrible. Cant believe they're announcing for a big-time program. They sound exactly how I imagine the UW-Superior announcers would sound.
