Atletas thoughts
« on: August 15, 2015, 01:08:20 PM »
Yeah....
1.   I believe in Henry.    Still curious what he will look like against an athletic 6'9 guy.
2.  Coaches have done a good job of getting them to play fast.    Pushing the ball off of every miss makes me so happy.
3.  Defensive play is inconsistent.
4.  Need to make free throws.
5. Traci Carter looks good.
6. Wally/Sandy/JJJ/Amin all seem pretty interchangeable at this point.
7.  This can only help.  Learning how to win, learning to play together.
8.   Still not sure about the level of competition.
9.   Nobody got hurt.    Moving on.

In regards to 6 I would divide them into two tiers. Sandy and JJJ in tier 1 and Wally and Amin in tier 2. JJJ looked much better today and was it just me or did Sandy look really tall? Like he grew from last year.

Thought JjJ played great today.  He and Sandy are 5 and 6.  Wally will give us minutes but is somewhat limited.  Like what I see in Sacar.  And Matty did a nice backup job today.

Considering this is a bunch of scrimmages, the production quality of this event is top-notch - whoever was thoughtful enough to fund this -- thanks.

I wish I could get Thomas and this you tube feed for every game.

putting JJJ and Wally together is just insulting.

Him and Sandy might be interchangeable. But Wally? Stop.

I wasn't overly impressed with any of the 4.   They all had their good and bad moments.

JJJ can score in transition.  Sandy can score in the half court.  Anim does all the little things, doesn't really make any bad decisions, defends really well, and has the ability to score when it is presented.  Wally will be a high energy guy and has the right attitude to fill that role.  The 3 will be our weakest position, but we have 4 guys who each bring something different to the table, so based on what we need in any given situation I think we'll be fine there, especially considering Cheatham can probably also provide some minutes.

In my view, based on what I see this team needs, the order I feel most comfortable with getting the most minutes would go:
1) Anim
2) Sandy
3) JJJ
4) Wally

We will be able to score the ball this year.  We need players who can defend the other team's best scorer.  I think Anim is best equipped to do this.  Hank's on ball defense is not very good.  Give us the option to let Hank guard a less offensively gifted player and Anim takes the better offensive option.

Dammit.   #10 was supposed to be that I wished I could get a look at Cheatham.

One of the reasons I am not as bullish as some others is that this team is sooooooo young.   I think there is a lot of talent here.   I'm just not convinced it all comes together this year.

I think Anim will be fine in a back-up role.  He'll be 7-9th man.  Last year that was a walk-on.  Sacar will give us a solid 12 minutes a game.  Was really impressed with Matt today.  He can see the floor, stay under control and give both Luke and Henry a real break.

JJJ is doing what the coaches want him to do, working hard on defense ,focusing his offense on driving and transition with an occasional mid range jumper. Based on what I have seen so far I think he is going to be an important factor this year for us. With so many other options he can just do the things he is good at and take advantage of his length etc.

Sacar looks like a winner to me. His stock will keep rising. Sandy continues his nice progression.

Wally is an energy guy, but not someone we want in the game in any kind of important situation.
Winning is overrated. The only time it is really important is in surgery and war.

The team is indeed young, which is why getting an opportunity to practice early and play in real games in August is huge. Theses four games will give the coaches significant insight into how to proceed with the fellas going forward. Great experience for all involved.

Also, the person who I would most temper my expectations on based on this performance is JJJ.  This is exactly the type of game that JJJ would thrive in, and exactly the type of game we won't play at all in the BE and beyond.  Atletas was extremely sloppy with the ball and their transition D was as bad as I've seen.  That's exactly where JJJ plays his best, in transition.  We won't see that kind of game in the BE.

3.  Defensive play is inconsistent.

Somewhat - but it is hard to tell right now.

They play a different style over there that we will not see a lot. Especially, swinging the ball around for 3 pointers and having bigs move outside. Seems like they mostly drive the lane to get open threes rather than taking it to the hoop to score or get fouled.

And we have to remember that these teams have been together a lot longer than MU so they should work together better.

I do agree with this to an extent.

This game is definitely not what will routinely happen in BE play.

But to imply that transition is non existent there is not true. We've just had a couple of really poor offensive teams recently.

This year I think our goal is going to be to push it more. So he should get opportunities.

Jury is out though. Agree 100% on that.

No one has said this.

Many said he couldn't play the point last season. He has had an entire off season to be molded into a PG.

Caveat, I was not one of the one's who said he couldn't play PG last season. Was confused why he didn't get time there.

Sandy does taller.  When will the players be officially measured?  Last year the Badger players grew 1-2 inches.

Thought Carter looks really good and will be a refreshing improvement at the point.

I agree. Anim and Heldt will almost assuredly come off the bench, and they are already showing signs of promise. Give them time to improve and find their roles and they will be valuable, even if not key, players this season. Love the depth and the fact that we're looking at least solid at each position 1-5.

  • I love the defense. There are mistakes & missed assignments, but the activity is excellent and the team is built to disrupt. Lots of length and the speed to take advantage of it.
  • Much better from JJJ, especially on the defensive end. Not sure he'll ever meet expectations, but he does look useful.
  • Henry and Luke will be a matchup nightmare for a lot of teams.
  • I love the competition for the 5th-8th slots. All of those guys should earn minutes situationally.
  • Loved Duane's vision today.
  • No chance of a box score, the score jumped from 32-29 to 46-41.
  • Twice today, Traci Carter had breakaways and laid it in. Small detail, but I love the effective lay-in over the flashy dunk. Seen too many botched uncontested dunks in my day.

Here--put that where the sun doesn't shine. Several comments about Duane not a PG, etc. And you don't know that he did the legwork--he only said he did. Now so did I. And don't waste my time Brew--waste your own!!

So yeah...as Sultan said, not one post in that thread supports your argument. Unless you have more evidence, might want to just chalk this one up to being wrong.

Sultan has selective memory. There have been a number of posters here that said he should not play point, and a number have said because he does not have the handles or other reasons. Will not chalk it up as being wrong. Maybe the exact words were not "He cannot play the point", because different posters had different reasons--hell people have said HE could play point--or bring the ball up. And since you feel that you are the statement monitor, your statements will be subject to that scrutiny. BTW--that was just one thread--which you asked for--now you go look up others--they are out there. I will move on to pursue truth, justice and the American way. You can go out of your way to prove somebody wrong. Good try though!

1. willie makes a statement
2. TAMU calls out willie
3. For proof, willie cites a thread that doesn't say what he said it did.
4. willie is called out again.
5. willie still somehow asserts he was right

Never stop being you willie.

What I took from reading that linked thread was that Mark Miller was predicting Engine to UConn!  Welcome Mr. Coffey!   ;D

How about just starting with truth, since you are struggling so mightily to provide any in this thread?

Actually, that's not accurate. Miller predicted Carter to Marquette on March 4 and was the first to do so. He stuck with that pick.

As Jay Bee will happily point out, Crystal Ball is to be taken with a grain of salt much of the time, but when it comes to MU targets, I do trust Miller's picks on there. Hoping he's wrong about Coffey, but as others have pointed out, another 2/3 in that class isn't our biggest need. Would much rather a PF with our last scholarship (or one of our last two, if HE heads to the NBA).

Georgetown just lost to BC Atletas 90-85.

FWIW GT played that game without DSR or Tre Campbell, their two main options at the point.

I think GTown also played the team from Iceland and won by about 10 (and like us were losing going into the 4th Q). How badly did we beat Atletas and how good id GTown supposed to be this year?

We beat Atletas by 17 and Lunardi has Georgetown as a 6 seed in his preseason bracketology.

That'll drop a few lines now for sure. And Atletas doesn't even have a Michael Beasley equivalent!

My guess is Georgetown will probably be picked 2nd in the Big East coaches poll this year, though anywhere 2-4 is possible.

Of course, summer/preseason games should always be taken with a grain of salt. I remember Syracuse famously losing an exhibition game to Division II Le Moyne College in 2009. It was so destructive to their program that they only managed to win the Big East, earn a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and post a 30-5 (15-3) record en route to a Sweet 16 appearance before losing to eventual national runner-up Butler.

So maybe it's significant, but it may also just be a team not taking a meaningless exhibition as seriously as fans often do.

Yeah, from watching the games, they appeared to be the best team we played, with Atletas a close 2nd.  But again, tough to really tell.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

MU and GTown played different "Select" teams.

Having watched all four games, I'm comfortable in saying that Haukar was the best team MU played over there.

Atletas and Vicenza the two best teams we played? I would say Haukar was the best team we played, and not just because of the margin of victory. They seemed most on the same page and the most dangerous in terms of being able to put points up in a hurry.

Maybe the games just blended together.  Admittedly didn't watch the last two all that closely.  I thought MU looked signficantly better in games 2-4 than game 1, so I think that is why Haukar looked better.  But I don't claim to be a hoops aficionado, especially when half-ass watching via an ipad.
