Staying home, like this.  Liked that he picked SLU over Kansas.  Shows sometimes kids like to stay put.  Great fan support when Rick was there.

Isn't Carrawell from St. Louis?  Anyone know if he's been able to make any recruiting inroads there?  St. Louis has had some good prep players, but I haven't heard Marquette associated with them.

It doesn't seem like Carrawell does much recruiting.

True. And he has been away from STL for 20 years.  Doubt he has any real contacts there anymore.

Courtney Ramey, a 4/5-star 2018 guard from suburban St. Louis, visited for Marquette Madness.
No idea whether Carawell is involved with his recruitment, though.

Carrawell went to the same high school as Jahidi White (Georgetown) Loren Woods (Wake Forest). Marquette has recruited some current St. Louis area players such as Levi Stockard (Kansas St.) Torrence Watson and Courtney Ramey. Ramey was at Marquette Madness recently and is a high school teammate of Gordon.  Jayson Tatum of course chose Carrawell's alma mater, Duke, this past year.

Ramey and Tyler Herro were always the premier Midwest guards growing up through grade school. Ramey would win out most of the time when they would compete - and they did a lot when they were young. As they got older and did more national stuff, they didn't cross paths too much. Ramey has a McCabe like handle but much more of a complete player. Decent shooter too.

From September 14th.

Prep Hoops Missouri
‏@PrepHoopsMO

Marquette assistant Chris Carrawell was at Whitfield's open gym this evening to see 2018 G Torrence Watson

As for Chris not having connections in St. Louis anymore, Ramey's father works at Cardinal Ritter, Vashon coach Tony Irons is the son of long time Vashon coach Floyd, who I bet Chris knows and Whitfield assistant Gary Buchanan played for Villanova and against Chis in high school.  Carrawell blocked 7 of Buchanan's shots in a high school tournament game back in 1997.

SLU just picked up another local star player today, Carteare Gordon. He picked SLU over Kansas and Missouri as his final three. He is also well connected to other local high profile recruits there including a few Marquette has recruited, and in some cases, are still recruiting.
Travis Ford is a seasoned quality coach with 332 career wins. It does not surprise me at all that he is successful recruiting right out of the box at SLU.

Travis Ford inherited some talent from the Sutton regime and did OK with it.  He got Marcus Smart.  Outside of that he was decidedly mediocre.

He's won unnatural carnal knowledge all in the last decade and was never a contender for 2nd place in the Big 12. If that's the standard of quality for you, I imagine you're casting the bronze for a Crean statue as we breathe.

I think the results will be much different in the A10 where his ability to recruit will mask his coaching ability.

I think Ford's hire was met with surprise and skepticism by many.  So far he is off to a very good start with recruiting.  Recruiting has long been a challenge at SLU. Many elite local players bypassed the state. Even Majerus didn't bother trying for most of them. The few Majerus recruited said no.  Thus far Ford has landed two elite local players and is trying for more.  He has an assistant coach that is well connected locally there.  Ford himself is the type of personality that SLU hasn't had.  He will need to show he can develop players, game plan, make adjustments, etc...all those things and perhaps will bring someone in to help with some of that.  We shall see in a few years.  There are several ways to win.

Gotta take MUFNY's opinion with a grain of salt. Remember, he still thinks Kostas was a miss for MU.

I was definitely wrong on that call. I thought he cared about winning a National Championship, all he cared about was his stats.

If a 17-22 year old person makes decisions based on their chances of winning a college basketball national championship, they are either A) poorly advised or B) going to end up disappointed much more often than not.
