Forbes Top 25?????
« on: August 01, 2015, 08:31:03 AM »
Lot of MU disrespect. Some of these schools I've barely heard of and/or they don't resonate with me as being prestigious (Earlham College????).

Might as well just field a team of one and dones and win as many games as possible and give them the middle finger back if the world views us as on par with Illinois State and UW-Milwaukee.

Here is the complete list:

1. Notre Dame
2. Northwestern
3. University of Chicago
4. Carleton College
5. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
6. Oberlin College
7. Kenyon College
8. Washington University in St. Louis
9. Grinnell College
10. Macalester College
11. University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
12. University of Wisconsin, Madison
13. DePauw University
14. Wheaton College
15. Denison University
16. Kalamazoo College
17. St. Olaf College
18. Indiana University, Bloomington
19. Case Western Reserve University
20. Earlham College
21. Lawrence University
22. University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
23. Purdue University, West Lafayette
24. College of Wooster
25. Drake University

25% of their methodology is based on "student loan debt."  Also they focus their graduation rate on a four year average.  Both of these are going to mean a bias toward liberal arts colleges like Earlham.

I don't know....Oberlin College has a pretty good recruiting class coming in.  Preseason top 10 isn't out of the question.

Northwestern and U of Chicago behind Notre Dame? Ummmmm, not in my book. Also, interesting to see UW-Madison behind Northwestern, Michigan and Illinois in the Big 10. Looks like the Vadgers have some work to do.

Yeah Grinnell and Macalester College beat Bucky.  Wisconsin taxpayers should demand their money back! (Isn't that Walker is trying to do?)

Schools like Carleton and Macalester are incredibly good at what they do - liberal arts.

The problem with lumping schools like that with huge state schools - or even mid-sized schools like ND and Northwestern - is that they're trying to compare things that simply aren't comparable.

If I was a HS kid who had no idea what I wanted to do - and wanted to be able to choose among anything from chemical engineering to photography to dance - my best bet would be a big state school.

If I had a pretty good direction, but still wanted to dabble in a broader range of classes, I'd add mid-sized schools like ND Northwestern (and MU) to the mix.

If I was pretty sure that I wanted to major in one of the liberal arts (maybe an English degree as a step toward law school), Carleton and Macalester are as good as any of them.  I currently live in MN, and know many very successful professionals who started that those two schools, or places like St. Olaf.

We are in the Big East, so don't qualify as a midwest school.

Gotta look at the criteria

The criteria is simple, poor Stephen Forbes is trying to save his struggling magazine by competing with the U.S. New and World Report or some other "list".  It is called marketing by listing.  A poorly conceived PR stunt.

Malcom Forbes knew how to run a magazine, the second generation not so much.  Then we have the $$$$ spent by Stephen trying to be elected president with his flat tax malarkey.  And then we take all this seriously....and then.....

I'm well aware of my ignorance here, but how do you differentiate "elite" liberal arts colleges from "good" liberal arts colleges? STEM and Business colleges seem easier to me to objectively rank

Numbers aren't the only factor, but they give a clue.

For example, the 25%-75% ACT composite scores for Northwestern are 30 and 33.  They are an identical 30 and 33 at Carleton, and a very respectable 29 and 32 at Macalester.

In contrast, the numbers for St. Thomas are 23 and 28 - very comparable to MU's 25 and 29.

Again, admission stats like that are only one factor.  But just like most people believe MU is very good and Northwestern is elite, people who pay close attention to smaller schools would consider St. Thomas very good and Carelton/Macalester elite.

The bottom line is the ultimate success of a school's grads.  I don't know a good source for numbers on that (employment/earnings), but anecdotally I know many docs and lawyers who started at Carleton or Macalester, and even more who would happily send their kids there.

If you look at the full list, it looks like Marquette was 27th (157 overall).  Ohio State was 26th (155).
