Calipari Talking With NBA’s Kings About Running Team, Yahoo Says

* Calipari spoke with owner about coaching, front-office roles
* Kings' current coach, George Karl, under contract for 3 years

By Erik Matuszewski

(Bloomberg) -- University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari has talked with Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive in recent weeks about taking over the team’s front-office and coaching jobs, Yahoo Sports reported, citing unidentified people familiar with the situation.

No offer has been made to Calipari, who was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in April.

Calipari, 56, has compiled a 190-38 record at Kentucky, winning one national championship and making four Final Four appearances. Calipari, who also coached at Massachusetts and Memphis, was coach and vice president of basketball operations for the National Basketball Association’s New Jersey Nets from 1996-99. He had just a 72-112 record in the NBA.

Calipari signed a seven-year, $54 million extension at Kentucky a year ago and Yahoo said Kings’ ownership understands it would take a multiyear deal paying more than $10 million annually to get him to consider leaving the Wildcats. Current Kings coach George Karl has three years and almost $10 million left on his contract, Yahoo said. Karl joined Sacramento in February.

The Kings’ interest in Calipari has grown as the relationship between Karl and All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins has deteriorated, according to Yahoo. Calipari coached Cousins at Kentucky and Yahoo reported that Ranadive believes Calipari could convince Cousins to stay with the franchise rather than seek a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Kings in April brought in Vlade Divac to run basketball operations.

Calipari is college basketball’s highest paid coach and is due a $1.6 million retention bonus on July 31. He’d owe no money to Kentucky if he terminates his contract.

Calipari Says No Offer From NBA’s Kings, Will Stay at Kentucky
* Calipari had talked with Kings' ownership, Yahoo reported
* He discussed taking over front-office and coaching jobs

By Erik Matuszewski

(Bloomberg) -- John Calipari said he’s talked to Sacramento Kings’ ownership about some of his former University of Kentucky players, but hasn’t been offered a National Basketball Association job and will remain coach of the Wildcats.

Calipari, 56, had talked with Kings owner Vivek Ranadive in recent weeks about taking over the team’s front-office and coaching jobs, Yahoo Sports reported Tuesday, citing unidentified people familiar with the situation. The report said no offer was made to Calipari, who was elected to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in April.

“For the 100th time, I have the best basketball coaching position in the world,” Calipari, who signed a seven-year, $54 million extension at Kentucky last year, said via Twitter. “I am not looking for any other coaching position.”

The Kings’ interest in Calipari grew as the relationship between current coach George Karl and All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins has deteriorated, according to Yahoo. Calipari coached Cousins at Kentucky and Yahoo reported that Ranadive believes Calipari could convince Cousins to stay with the franchise rather than seek a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Kings in April brought in Vlade Divac to run basketball operations.

Calipari said on his Twitter account that he’s talked about Cousins with Ranadive “on and off” since the Tibco Software Inc. founder bought the team in 2013. Calipari said he’s also spoken with Ranadive in the past two weeks about the NBA draft, with the Kings selecting Kentucky’s Willie Cauley-Stein with the sixth overall pick.

Calipari wrote on Twitter that “at no time” has Ranadive offered him a job and then, in all capital letters, said he will be at Kentucky.

Calipari, 56, has compiled a 190-38 record with the Wildcats, winning one national championship and making four Final Four appearances. Calipari, who also coached at Massachusetts and Memphis, was coach and vice president of basketball operations for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets from 1996-99. He had a 72-112 record in the NBA.

Why would Cal jump to the NBA?  He's got a gig now where there's no salary cap for his players...

Because some team is going to eventually come along and offer him a sum of money that is too much to refuse along with other incentives/positions within the organization. Plus I'm sure that his first venture into the NBA not being a success burns at him and he would love to prove his critics wrong.

This whole things makes no sense for either side.

Why would Calipari leave a job like Kentucky where's he got it made and practically guaranteed to be a top team every year?

More importantly, what evidence does any NBA team have that the guy can actually coach at a high level?  All he has shown is that he can win in college when he has overwhelmingly superior talent, an advantage he will never have in the NBA.

I don't know about that, he took UMass to the FF with Marcus camby but outside of him who else good was on that team? I agree for the most part all he's shown is he can kick butt with a team of NBA players vs any team with 1 or 2 NBA players

As of right now, only 4 coaches in the NBA make more money at their current job than Calipari makes at Kentucky. He is making a shade over $6M. Gregg Popovich ($11M), Doc Rivers ($10M), Flip Saunders ($9M), and Stan Van Gundy ($7M) are the only ones making more. The other 26 NBA franchises are all paying their head coaches less than Kentucky is paying Cal. The idea that the money in the NBA is that much better than the blue bloods isn't accurate. Also, with a max 40 game season at UK, no coach in the NBA is making more per game than Cal is.
