Carlino Top 100; Derrick vs. Paige/Harrison/Staten

In a piece on Coach K on Breitbart this morning, I noted that Duke players had dominated the Value Add rankings (see 2003-2015 players here) with 35 top 100 players and eight top 10 players - but the table also noted that Marquette had the 10th most top 100 players (18) and the third most top 10 players (Butler, Crowder, Diener, Wade).

The weekly run of the www.valueaddbasketball.com numbers tonight (database not updated yet) showed Marquette now has their 19th top 100 player in Matt Carlino, and Derrick Wilson is one of the most improved players in jumping from a 0,00 Value Add last season to 3.42 - the 27th best total in the tough Big East.

Carlino's recent impersonation of Steve Novak (19 of 33 treys for 58% and 18-19 free throws for 95% in last four games) has shot him all the way to 94th. I know "top 100" does not sound great - but it is phenomenal when you consider the 4000+ players in the country. In fact, I get lots of complaints from around the country in disbelief that a local star is not in the top 100.

The fact that Carlino did this against defenses that were were very good: one average (Creighton100.6 points per 100 trips just better than average), one good (Xavier 98.3) and two excellent (St. John's 92.9 and Georgetown 94.3) shoots him way up the list. Carlino is worth 6.30 extra points a game to MU according to Value Add - the 8th best total in the Big East.

But Derrick's surge is the more surprising and really makes the case for a potential quiet most improved player of the year. Wilson never hit even 1.00 in his first three seasons, and last year collapsed to a 0.00 only because we do not give negative numbers.

The thing that Value Add measures that most do not see are players who do not make mistakes - and Derrick has turned into one of the best at not COSTING MU points:

The thing that makes Derrick so much more valuable this year is not that he suddenly doesn't mind going to the hoop to slam twice in a short span (once while being mauled), or that his three-pointer has become just enough of a threat that you cannot leave him alone.

Ken Pomeroy measures Derrick as one of the best at avoiding fouls. He takes so few bad shots, that Derrick IS AN ABOVE AVERAGE SHOOTER THIS SEASON (jumped from 40.9 eFG% last year to 49.0% this season). Yes, the free throw percentage overall is dreadful, but his 58% since Thanksgiving is not that bad - so all the offseason shooting has paid off.

The fun starts when you compare Derrick to three point guards that some considered the best three in the country coming into this year; UNC's Marcus Paige, Kentucky's Andrew Harrison and West Virginia's Juwan Staten.

Obviously those three are light years ahead of Derrick on offense, and may make take over games on the way to title runs. But ignore the differences in shooting for a minute. Derrick's on-ball defense is excellent, so lets go through the other numbers:

Derrick has come up with 23 steals, the exact average of Paige/Harrison/Staten

Derrick has done this while committing only 31 fouls - an incredible ratio and just one more foul than the average of the Big Three - and with Derrick having to commit a few late fouls to stop the clock really no difference there.

Here is where it gets fun - Derrick has come up with those steals on one end of the court while only turning the ball over 25 times at the other end -meaning he has turned the ball over A DOZEN TIMES FEWER than the average of the Big 3 (37 turnovers). Remember, there are over twice as many turnovers as steals due to balls thrown out of bounds, travels, etc.

The big three have only a slight edge over Derrick in assists - 78 to 70 - despite MU playing at a slow tempo. But that is more than made up for by Derrick ripping down 15 more rebounds that the average of the other three (62 to 47 edge).

Of course once you add in the offensive explosiveness of those three they are all still in the top 5% of all players and average a 5.71 Value Add, while Derrick comes in at 437th with a 3.42 Value Add, but he has worked very hard to do the things he can do very well and be a strong contributor.

You have to look at value add in a larger context.  To isolate #27 Derrick Wilson vs #29 Jayvaughn Pinkston is flawed.  Compare the teams.  Marquette has 3 top 35 BE players according to value add but Villanova has 7.  Villanova's highest ranked player is 9th, which leads me to conclude that their collective strength takes away from their individual rankings.  Put another way, if Pinkston played on a less talented team like Marquette he would be more heavily relied on and likely move up the rankings.  Conversely, put Derrick Wilson on a more talented and he plays less, moving him down the value add rankings.

The other useful application of value add is to compare rankings within a roster.  Who should get more minutes between Juan Anderson and Steve Taylor?  Simple math: 10 BE teams x 5 starters= 50.  Looking at value add Juan is #41, an average BE starter, while Steve is #64 meaning he's a decent backup.  Juan should typically play more than Steve and he does.

Conclusions:

Carlino is easily our best and most valuable player.
Then it's the Wilsons (Derrick being more steady while Duane has more hot and cold stretches with his best being better than Derrick)
Juan is 4th.
Luke is 5th barely ahead of Cohen and Johnson but being 2nd best frontcourt player gives him a bigger role than Sandy and Jajuan who are 4th and 5th for the three perimeter spots.
Sandy and Jajuan are fairly interchangeable as both have their ups and downs.
Steve is clearly 8th and behind Juan and Luke in the frontcourt rotation.  Being the 3rd frontcourt player means he will sometimes have a larger role than the 5th perimeter player, even though that player ranks a little higher overall.

I respect Bama's work.  However, to say it is infallible is naive.  Would anyone here even say that Derrick Wilson and Billy Garrett are even in the same area code as far as the type of player they are/value they bring to a team??  Somehow I feel a guy averaging 5.5ppg in 33.85 minutes per game isn't the 27th best player in the conference.  Model weights way too heavy on turnovers.

Look at it this way - a guy like JJJ would average 15.5 points per 40 minutes.  Though he may turn the ball over more, he'd essentially have to turn it over 4 more times per game, and ALL 4 of those turnovers lead to made 2 point FGs (8 points) to be at a break even point with a ball protector like Derrick based on points per 40/ppg projections.    You play JJJ 34 minutes per game, you are virtually guaranteed 13-15ppg.  In fact JJJ has played 30 minutes or more in 3 games this year - TN Martin, Ohio State, Arizona State - he averaged 15.65ppg in those games.  Personally, I'd prefer to take 10 more ppg and a few more turnovers...from a much more talented basketball player - Not to mention get a sophomore more playing time and experience.

Lastly, I look at this list and see we have 7 players in the Top 52 on this list.  According to this data/list MU team isn't short of talent to be able to win at a much higher level than it has shown thus far.  So what's the rub?  Are we underperforming our talent?  For all the Steve Lavin can't coach jokes, he only has 5 guys in Top 52.  Butler?  5 players in Top 52.  Georgetown?  6 players.  Xavier?  6 players.  Nova 7 players.  Providence?  4 players.

That's a fine way to look at it - either way - we aren't under talented relative to the league.  Nor should we expect to finish anything less than 9-9 given the level of our talent.

As for Florida - you make a good case.  A few things I'd say:  Billy Donovan has lots of skins on the wall - to call into question his coaching is quite a bit different than to call into question Wojo's in his first year.  

Strength of schedule.  Pomeroy ranks Florida 37, despite their 10-9 record that matches Marquette. We are 92.  Next.

WTF? How many points per 40 minutes a guy scores is almost meaningless. JJJ is an incredibly inefficient offensive player and that is only due in part to his alarming TO rate. He also misses a ton of shots while getting to that 15.5 per 40. His Ortg is what, 86? Worst on the team by far. He's shooting 16% on 3s, 0% in conference, (0-12) but he keeps chucking. IF he would stop shooting 3s altogether he'd be a contributor but until then he'll remain our worst option on the perimeter.

Here's why - the 50th best player isn't a difference maker. The top 25 are - in effect, they're the first, second, third, fourth and fifth all conference teams. Villanova has 6 in the top 25. Butler has 5, Xavier 4. Georgetown, St John's and Seton Hall have 3. Providence has 2. Marquette has 1, DePaul and Creighton have 0. DePaul is certainly outperforming their talent - so far. We're right about where we should be.

Yeah, just look at the end of the top-100. Ismael Sanogo for Seton Hall cracks the top-100. He has more DNPs (6) than games in which he's played more than 5 minutes (5). If you're looking at guys that are top-tier in the conference, you're looking at the top-15. Once you get past those guys you are on to the mid-level starters.

The point being made by TAMU was for this season, and the relative inexperience of our roster and Florida's.  Both rosters having young, Top 100 talent.  Both having similar records.  Last season, wasn't applicable. 

But, while we are at it, as Bama pointed out, last season Derrick actually had a NEGATIVE value ADD - he's improved a lot over last year.  Yet what did Buzz do?  Played him MORE minutes than any other player on the team.  And decided to pair him with a guy like Jake Thomas for 30+ minutes a game.  LOL.  And we have people here blaming Davante and Jamil for why last season went wrong.  WTF were they supposed to do with that backcourt pairing?

So, if you want to get all caught up in O-Rating - Kris Dunn is a worse player than Derrick Wilson.  So is Roosevelt Jones.  Where do those guys rank on Bama's list of Big EAst players?

JJJ is an AGGRESSIVE player - I look at that Top 10 list in the Big East above and see a lot of players I like.  Yes JJJ needs to improve, yet like I said all of last year you have to give a guy consistent playing time and run to know what he really "is."  JJJ has gotten 7 games this season of 25+ minutes.  His O-Rating in those games 98.  Is it great?  No, but it is much better than 89.

Meanwhile Derrick Wilson has ONLY 3 games of less than 25 minutes.  His average O Rating in those games??  67

But I know, all the guys here who have never played the game on much of any level will ridicule my statement that you need long runs of playing time to reflect what you truly are as a player.  To draw conclusions off of a guy playing scattered DNP's, to 10 minutes to 17 minutes, comprised of 3 or 4 different stints of action - you just can't draw any relevant conclusions from that type of playing time.

Question: Say you have a team that is successful/winning with 4/5 starters being upperclassmen. But you also have a bunch of top 100 underclassmen talent sitting on the bench. As you've said, you need to give guys consistent playing time/run to figure out what they are. So, when do these underclassmen get "found out"? Your team is clearly successful currently, so you aren't going to bench the current starters just to find out about the underclassmen.

I don't have any stats, but my eyes tell me that Wojo is willing to ride the hot hand inside of any given game.

We've seen Sandy Cohen play well, and get a bunch of minutes. Steve Taylor was good against SJU, so he got a lot of minutes. etc. etc.

So, it's likely that all of MU's players have their worst offensive numbers when they play the least amount of minutes. When they have good nights, Wojo gives them more minutes.
