ND thoughts

1.  Derrick changed the game when he told Wojo during the timeout he wanted to guard Tyler.   He was the man tonight.
2.  Juan was a man tonight, too.
3.  Luke doesn't walk on water.   ND was effective with their double teams.   MU has to do a better job of cutting.
4.  JJJ was pretty good too.
5.  So bad in the first half.   Intensity picked up in the second half.   Defense improved, more points in transition.
6.   Bad free throw shooting is contagious.
7.  Need more minutes from Cohen.
8.   Merry Christmas to all.

Worst first half ever.

Derrick and JJJ just started taking it at them(really all you have to do against a small inferior team).

Carlino efficient with some big makes but disappeared for a whole half and his D was baaaaad. Rest of team I thought played really nice defense for the majority of the game.

Duane..I'll just say a clunker vs ND is the time to have one. Get it out of the way before BE time.

Cohen mostly MIA. Juan great boards. Steve was a man on the boards for a while but needs to make Freebies.

Luke started with the missed bunnies but was ok. Rest of team at fault for not helping when he was doubled. We will learn.

Duane had just flopped and given up the 3.  Timeout.  Wojo is saying that we need to guard better and starts to say that somebody has to....and Derrick says that he will take Tyler.   Game changed.

9. ND is a bad team with an even worse coach. Inside of 2:30 to play, trailing by 9 and he had his defense just stand and watch Derrick dribble. Pick up your check and go home.

10. We may be able to beat any team in the BE, but we can also lose to any - Depaul included.

Monster rebounding, great D, press break from this team?  Not believable in November.

If I was offered 6/6/3/3 as averages from Fish I'd have taken it without hesitation.  If that's a bad game, even better.

Even said he was a hot shooter and that needs attention.  Whole defense locked down after DW took the lead in that timeout.

And that's what I hope people keep in mind. Before his first two game explosion. Tonight's numbers were close to what people were expecting. So hopefully expectations don't abruptly raise for a bunch of people. Unless you are an Anthony Davis type big guys are prone to streaky games based on how often they can get ball in position to score. I will take this as an "off game".

I was stunned they didn't foul at the end. Especially how poorly we were shooting FTs.

The coach probably got advise from Heisenberg and didn't foul since it's got such a small chance of succeeding anyway.

Lol yeah that was horrible. I was obviously exaggerating to begin with but with who we were playing today, that was about as bad of a half as you can have.

Better than getting pounded by the Domers though!!

Some people on this board love to deal in absolute terms. Omaha was the "worst loss in Marquette history." Tonight's first half was "the worst ever." If you can only get behind a team when it's mowing down opponents, then just get it over with and become a Kentucky fan.

Great thoughts Tower.  Surprised you missed the coaching adjustment by Wojo, however...  In the 2nd half, because of constant quick double teams on Fischer as soon as he got the ball down low, he moved Fischer to the high post to do the high post handoff which cleared big defenders out of the middle and created movement that enabled Derrick and jjj to get to the rim.  The players executed well, but it was the mid-stream change by Wojo that made it happen.

You are correct.   That was a nice adjustment.  When Luke is dribbling on the perimeter or even is just waiting to make the hand off, he hunches over.

I thought defensive intensity/hustle was fine throughout.  Problem was on offense.

Too many penetrators careening to the basket willy-nilly without other players positioning themselves for the dish and with the penetrator only looking at the basket.  Sometimes the team's bodies are quicker than their brain, if you know what I mean.  Whenever the pace gets hectic, we get sloppier and sloppier.

I am not a fan of Derrick Wilson's constant slowing down and dribbling around pointlessly, but tonight he was the cure to what ailed us.  Slowed us down, but more importantly calmed us down on offense, got us to actually run some offense and penetrated with a purpose.  Great game for him, not to mention his usual outstanding work on defense and even more impressive on the boards.

Anderson great game on defense and the boards, but just crazy out of control a lot on offense.

JjJ again showed flashes, but perhaps the biggest culprit of being out of control.

Carlino is going to be a focus of the defense (a guy to take away) like Thomas was last year, but he has more weapons at his disposal.  Was the one guy I'd like to have seen be a little more aggressive yesterday.

Fischer needs to pass out of the double team much quicker.  Last night he missed Taylor a few times when a quick catch and pass would have led to a layup.

I like that for 30 minutes the game looked for all the world that it was going to be a slog right to the end, but we found a way to get separation and cruise to the win at the end.

This is exactly what you want from your buy games.  We got tested, got a good idea of what teams may do against us with Fischer and pulled away for the win on a night when we couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

I know Juan had 13 boards in the box score, but how many other plays did he keep alive by tipping it up or out?  He seemed to be everywhere last night.

One other item I noticed last night, was several guys huffing and puffing the last 5 minutes of the game.  The guys looked pretty tired and against a quicker, more athletic team than ND, that won't bode very well.  Will need to get some more minutes out of Cohen to help keep guys a little bit more fresh.
