Time to forget last night's game and turn our attention to MU's next breakout NBA star.

The bulls offered 4 year $44, and he wanted 4 $52mil  Bulls are looking really dumb by not trying to bridge that gap 4 X 48 or 4 x 50.   My guess is gets at least 4 years and 60 mil.

I could possibly see 5 for 70 from the right team.

Can anyone offer him a 5-year deal yet? I don't know all the NBA contract regulations, but I thought 4 years was the max for a RFA. Definitely could be wrong on that.

If Jimmy & his agent are smart, the'll take slightly less money for one of those 4 year deals with a player opt-out after 2. A player like him could get crazy money if the cap goes where it's expected to go. In a couple years he could be drastically UNDERpaid at ~$15 mil per. Crazy!

They have the cap room for Jimmy, Rose, Noah, Gasol, Mirotaic, and Taj?  If Jimmy gets 12, then those 6 guys will be around 67, then you have Heinrich and Dougie @ another 5, you are at 72, which is 14 mil above the salary cap this year...

I know the salary cap will go up, just depends how much, and if the Bulls are willing to go over, or ship off Taj.

He can get 4 for 70 (Klay Thompson deal). No 5 year deal available for Bulls (Rose took that option) and Jimmy doesn't qualify at this point anyway.

Bird Rights make Jimmy's salary cap hit exempt, I believe.

Everyone and their mother has been writing about Jimmy recently:

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11931211/jimmy-butler-unusual-path-becoming-star?src=mobile&rand=ref~%7B%22ref%22%3A%22http%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FHQp58tkoTQ%22%7D
Pretty shrewd article here clearly pushed by Va Tech's head coach. This is majority about Buzz IDing talent and getting them to the NBA based on his reputation among coaches.

Yerp, good call.

Yep, and that's why they can't just get another free agent if they decide not to match someones max offer. It's basically going to be Jimmy at 4 for 70 or some journeyman as their shooting guard next year.

I also thought that Buzz made this about him quite a bit more than he should. Nothing with Buzz surprises me anymore. I don't hate him like some ppl do here but I liked him less and less as the years have gone by.

Congrats to jimmy on the year he is having. Hope he keeps up the good work and the stellar season. My favorite MU players. A really humble man that seems to be coming into his own. He deserves all the accolades that he is getting/will get.

From Grantland:

If your team hasn’t yet met the wrath of Jimmy Butler this season, just know that it’s coming. One of the league’s best perimeter defenders, who faced a startling offensive regression last year, is suddenly the Bulls’ best offensive player on a team that might approach a top-10 offense for the first time since 2012.

Of course, the chances of that happening are already dwindling. The Bulls are already dealing with the first wave of injuries in what is now cemented as an annual tradition of maximizing a hampered roster. Butler is the latest to rise to the occasion, and he’s done it in a big way. With Derrick Rose in a semipermanent “will he, won’t he” dance, Butler’s numbers are career highs across the board. He’s also taken on more responsibility as a creator. So far, so good.

Butler is in the top 50 in total drives, a list densely populated by ball-dominant point guards. He’s driven the ball to the hoop more often than Chris Paul, in the same number of games. When he drives, good things tend to happen. The Bulls score 1.23 points for every drive Butler takes, a figure nearly identical to Kyrie Irving’s rate, better than John Wall’s and within tenths of Damian Lillard’s and James Harden’s numbers.

In this bizarro reality where the best player in the world stinks and the (former?) second-best player in the world is reduced to watching devastation porn in a walking boot, Butler stands alone as the only player this season to average at least 20 points on 49 percent shooting, five rebounds, and three assists. Since 2010-11, only LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade, and Blake Griffin have met these parameters. If you were still wondering about the state of his confidence after last season’s struggles, stop. Jimmy is already calling himself “Baby Mike.”

Question just for fun. Say he continues this trend and Lebron keeps sucking. Besides the brow, who else has been this good? Is MVP conversation an option for JFB?

Besides Davis, Jimmy would have to get past Stephen Curry and LaMarcus Aldridge, both of whom are putting up better numbers for better teams, and probably even DeMarcus Cousins.

When you factor in defense I think Jimmy would get a lot of consideration with those other guys.

And the fact that everyone around Jimmy is constantly sitting out games(Not just Rose).

Playing with overrated guys like Love and Irving does not mean Lebron is sucking.

Lebron's numbers are close to what they were last year - points are down about 2 per game because Love & Irving are shoot-first guys.

Overrated? Love is a 6'10 player that can shoot, rebound and pass. Not a great defender, but he more than makes up for it. Made a horrendous timberwolves team relevant. Kyrie Irving is a top 10 point guard in the league, not sure who's rating him in the top 5.

Lebron needs to play hard. I've watched several games and he's going through the motions....he's trying to coast into the playoffs. He whines about the numbers of games, number of minutes, guys not passing, etc. He's a total b*tch, and he is playing poorly. And I'm a Lebron guy!

Where are all the rubes on this board saying Butler was foolish to turn down that contract?? Guy is about to get paid, well deserved.

How many years in the league without the playoffs? Now, Love averages 16 and 10 when he gets on a team with good players.

And he is statistically the worst low post defender in the league. He is no Chris Bosh

Fred Mitchell, Chicago Tribune...

DENVER — Jimmy Butler refuses to refer to himself as a star, but his coach begs to differ.

“He has been incredible,” coach Tom Thibodeau said. “He’s a star. And he does it on both ends of the floor. He’s an amazing player.

“We’ve had him play the point, we’ve had him play the 2 (shooting guard), the 3 (small forward) and tonight he played the 4 (power forward). And he hasn’t had any time to practice the 4.

“He’s smart, he’s tough. He does whatever the team needs. He found a way to help lead us into coming back and having a shot at the end.”

Butler’s 32 points were not enough to prevent the Bulls from losing their eighth straight game in Denver as the Nuggets prevailed 114-109 at the Pepsi Center.

Thibodeau announced before Tuesday night’s game that center Joakim Noah would be out with a left eye abrasion and a left knee effusion. Then the team announced before the third quarter that Derrick Rose would sit out the second half because of left hamstring tightness. He had missed four games because of that before playing Monday night.

But Butler continues to play like a star even in their absence.

“I’m not a star. I’m a good role player on a really, really good team. A really, really deep team,” Butler said. “I like being a role player. Star is not … never has been next to Jimmy Butler’s name. It never will be. I will always just be an under-the-radar dog.”

Thibodeau clearly is sick of talking about the plethora of injuries that have beset his team. While he is not exactly Mr. Sunshine, Thibodeau is more pleased to focus on the performances of players such as Butler, who have benefited from the extra playing time.

“Pau (Gasol) is doing a great job, as well,” Thibodeau said. “I don’t want that to get lost in what’s happening.”

Rose gave it a shot for the back-to-back competition, but looked fairly tentative in the first half, scoring just two points. Even veteran guard Kirk Hinrich was ready to go after missing two games with a chest contusion. He looked rusty but finished with 10 points in 31 minutes.

Butler, who scored 17 first-half points, has been running on fumes after racking up serious minutes on the court for the Bulls. But the third-year guard isn’t complaining, and neither are his teammates.

“Jimmy is very aggressive. He is a player who is having an excellent season,” Gasol said. “I didn’t know him personally before (joining the Bulls as a free agent). But he has definitely gone to another level. And I am very proud of what he is doing, how he is playing, how aggressive and effective he has been on both ends of the floor. Now he has to sustain it.

“He is playing a lot of minutes, and with the schedule that we have, it is not going to be easy to sustain. Hopefully we will do well and we will be able to give him a little more rest during games.”

Butler, who entered Tuesday night averaging 39.2 minutes per game, said he has appreciated the opportunity to play more because of injuries to several veterans.

“How can you not?” Butler said. “Growing up, this is what you want to do, play in the NBA, let alone play a lot of minutes. So, tired or not, I have to produce and help this team win.”

Butler helped the Bulls edge the Jazz on Monday night, 97-95, with 25 points, four steals and non-stop defense on Gordon Hayward, who missed a last-second 3-point try.

Butler, who was raring to go again Tuesday night with a 20.8 scoring average, is learning that the ultimate compliment for a visiting team’s player is to be booed lustily, as Noah has been throughout the league.

“A lot of teams boo him, and I think, ‘What would Jo do?’ And Jo would just block it out, smile and make some shots,” Butler said.
