New superbar rule - no politics.
« on: November 16, 2007, 12:57:31 PM »
I know some people will be disappointed by this, but we've decided to change the Superbar to a relatively politics free zone.

As we go forward, we'd like to keep this space dedicated to things that people would normally post the main basketball board as "Off Topic".

Cheers - now go grab yourself a red, white & blue, and enjoy the Superbar.

This is too bad - I find these discussions entertaining.  I guess the other boards will suffice for politics
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

I agree----I don't know what in the world motivated that decision (perhaps we could have an explanation). We're going into an election year and politics will be on most peoples mind.

I hope there is a reconsideration !

Explanation?  Well, since I already typed this up in a PM...

There were a few factors that went into making this change:

1) Only a small number of people participate in the discussion

2) I receive more complaints about it than compliments.  Many people are turned off by it.

3) On a few occasions, the question of allowing politics discussion has come up among the moderators.  The big problem being, that nobody wanted to read or moderate political discussion.  We could ask for an interested party to take over moderation, but most people that are fully ingrained in the conversation are not nearly as neutral as they would like to believe they are.

4) The site was created as a Marquette Sports (mostly Basketball) site.  The intention of the Superbar forum was that there are certain issues that relate to Marquette basketball fans, that do are not directly related to basketball. i.e. donations to the university, (famous) alumni updates, student organization news, where MU girls rank in Playboy lists, etc.  Politics, while applicable to MU Basketball fans because most reside in the US, really doesn't fit with the goal of the site, or as a function of the university itself.  We certainly want to remain a website "By the fans, For the fans", but that also means we tailor to Basketball fans.

Don't understand why someone would click on a political thread and then complain - sounds like whining to me.

But rule is fine with me.

As a fan and a graduate I think that excluding a forum that includes politics is contrary to what being a warrior is all about. I understand that this type of forum is not the original intent of MUScoop but I contend that any limit on a topic of discussion is an affront to the institution that we hold dear. I think such a forum would come with a disclaimer, some hard fast rules about conduct. I would be genuinely interested in what my fellow scoopers had to say on different topics that eventually would wind up in a discussion about politics.

Really? Go away..... Well done? I guess I'll just hold my breath until I get my way. Ever hear of the Socratic Method. Thank you for supporting my assertion.

Super disappointed now that I was looking through the beer thread. You have excellent taste in beer, IMHO, what could be more fun than a civil discussion of what ails the world over a good beer. I am a big Half Acre fan as well as a fan of most New Glarus products.

You should read the Derrick Wilson threads, multiple the hard-headed opinions by 10, and that's what political discussion is like here.  Impossible for the moderators to keep track of when there's so much good basketball discussion to be had.

But glad you're enjoying most of the discussion here :)

It was tried.   It ended poorly.    I did not support the original decision to ban politics, but I have come to support it.   Look at the number of threads that get locked.   Look at the discussions that lead to them getting locked.   Look who the usual suspects are when a thread gets locked.   Multiply by infinity.   The mods are right.

Yes, similar to the New Deal (which I fully support).
