New MU Beat Writer at the Journal-Sentinel
« on: October 16, 2014, 10:07:41 AM »
Well.... they didn't hire someone new, but it looks like Matt Velasquez is moving over to the MU Beat at the J-S... at least when he's done with the Becky football season.

At least he kind of looks like a long lost relative of Rosiak's, so I'm willing to cut him a break.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

The guy from the Journal at the WFB volleyball tournament this weekend said Hunt was taking a buyout.  Couldn't get worse.

Awesome. I don't even need slanted/biased cheerleading reporting like the badgers get. I just want someone that actually pays attention to the subject he's supposed to be covering and gets basic facts correct. At least there's hope for that here with Velasquez.

Why do they have to buy out Hunt?  Why can't they just point to his work product and show him the door?

Because it's an employee owned enterprise.

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Long lost in that they are both folically challenged???

In all seriousness, I think this is a positive.  The coverage couldn't have gotten worse.  This guy will probably be more open to doing all the work than Mike Hunt was.

So he started right after Becky played Northwestern? :D

I'm sure this guy will be an upgrade over Hunt, which isn't saying much.

Man, do I miss Rosiak. He did great work for MU.

Welcome to the beat, Matt.

You'll find MUScoop to be a place for not only warm and constructive evaluation of your professional talents, but also a wealth of knowledge and insight on all manner of playing time division and player body language dissection.

Seriously though, dude, you will find it pretty much impossible not to outshine your immediate predecessor.

Very nice, and when just showering and combing his hair would be an upgrade over Hunt.

Only bad thing, no more Mike Hunt jokes.

I actually know Hunt and he really is a good guy. He used to be a very good beat reporter when he covered the Bucks, too.

After they took his column away, it was obvious that he went into the Marquette beat kicking and screaming. He never did the work he should have, and that cost all of us fans an opportunity to know more about the team. I'm not defending him. It was inexcusable.

He did write several outstanding pieces and that was even more frustrating because it showed he could have excelled on the beat if he had wanted to.

I'm glad he has hung it up because nobody should have a job he or she hates. I'm mostly glad because we, as readers, deserve better.

I welcome Matt and hope he throws himself into the beat. It would be nice if he even shows up on Scoop every once in awhile, as Rosiak used to do.

You obviously have no imagination.

For example:

Matt Velazquez is much more interesting than Mike Hunt.

Yeah I totally agree with that. The guy could write, which made it all the more obvious that he didn't give a fook (h/t 4ever). In actuality I kinda respect that, but frustrating to sit through that as a hard core fan on top of the on-court performance last year.

Any professional who compromises his work product for his own silly reasons is a douche.  Zero respect for a guy who intentionally and purposefully submarines his own reputation.  So, the guy could write.........but chose not to??.....Bravo Bravo!
