BIG EAST To Launch Digital Network
FOX Sports to Host Free BIG EAST Content Exclusively on FOX Sports GO Digital Platform

http://www.bigeast.com/genrel/090514aaa.html

NEW YORK – The BIG EAST Conference, in partnership with FOX Sports, today announced the creation of the BIG EAST Digital Network, a conference-specific, year-round HD digital channel offering free live streaming of 80-100 sporting events annually, in addition to the authenticated live streaming of BIG EAST events on FOX Sports networks. The BIG EAST Digital Network will begin with the 2014-15 academic year.

The BIG EAST Digital Network will have its own branded channel within FOX Sports GO, the app that provides live streaming video of FOX Sports content at home or on-the-go.  The BIG EAST is the first collegiate conference to be hosted on the network’s mobile platform.

FOX Sports GO will launch the BIG EAST Digital Network on September 25 and will feature a women’s soccer match between Georgetown at DePaul at 5 PM EST as the first event.

FOX Sports GO is currently available for iOS, Android, Kindle Fire tablets and Fire phones, select Windows devices, and on desktops through FOXSportsGO.com.  Fans can download the mobile app for free from the iTunes App Store, Google Play, Amazon App Store and Windows Store.

With most BIG EAST men’s basketball games set to be televised on FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, FOX Sports Regional Networks, or FOX broadcast network during the 2014-15 season, the BIG EAST Digital Network will supplement scheduled television coverage while expanding exposure of additional athletic contests, including BIG EAST women’s basketball and the conference's 20 Olympic sports.   In addition to live streaming, content will include highlights, selected news coverage and shoulder programming. The BIG EAST will oversee all production on the Digital Network. Rush Media Company will serve as the conference's third-party production services supplier.

“The Conference is proud to team with FOX Sports to introduce the BIG EAST Digital Network,” said Commissioner Val Ackerman. “While fans of the conference will be able to see all of our men’s basketball games on television, the BIG EAST Digital Network will allow easy access to other programming valued by our schools, including women’s basketball and Olympic sports competitions and features.  Thanks to FOX Sports GO's reach, the Digital Network will provide substantial distribution of BIG EAST sports to a wider audience and better serve our student-athletes and their supporters."

Highlighted coverage on the Digital Network will include select regular season BIG EAST women’s basketball games, as well as the opening round and quarterfinal rounds of the women’s basketball tournament in Chicago, and championship games for the conference’s Olympic sports.

Said Clark Pierce, FOX Sports Senior Vice President of Mobile and Advanced Platforms: “The BIG EAST Digital Network is an excellent addition to the FOX Sports GO portfolio. We’re proud that we’ll have the opportunity to showcase these great events and make them accessible to fans and supporters at home or on-the-go.”

FOX Sports GO users who are also subscribers of participating video providers can live stream the BIG EAST men’s and women’s basketball telecasts, plus the Olympic sports championships,  carried on FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2, FOX Sports Regional Networks, and FOX broadcast network.  The BIG EAST women’s basketball events and the Olympic sports contests that are not televised by FOX Sports do not require a video subscription.

Select content will also be available on bigeast.com, including historical BIG EAST games on demand, highlight footage, and original programming to be unveiled at a later date. Specific dates and additional details of featured match-ups, including regular season games and championship contests, will be released as game schedules are finalized.

Just so folks are aware, a number of pay television providers carry Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, etc but do not authenticate for Fox Sports Go.  This is due to contractual issues.

Charter
DIRECTV
DISH
Verizon Fios

etc, etc   do not authenticate currently

For those of us who refuse to pay for cable, at least we get to watch something with this app.  A little soccer and volleyball maybe.

Again, DIRECTV cannot get their contracts straight with mobile sports...First ESPN now this...

Actually, not how it works.  Long term deals are signed and new features are developed in that time period.  So, as an example, say DIRECTV cut a deal with ESPN \ DISNEY in 2010 to last 4 years.  Say ESPN gets $5.00 per sub (all pretend numbers).  Say in 2012 the ESPN app was launched.  DTV says, we want that app for our customers.  ESPN says, ok, but to get that we want to open up the entire contract and tear it up, meaning you will start paying $6.50 in 2012 instead of 2015...several hundred million dollars more for the right to have this app.  DTV clearly wanted it, ESPN wanted to leverage it for way more money than it is worth.

This is why you see so few services carry these things when they are launched, because they are in mid contract or early in the contract and having to incur huge price increases which have to be passed on to customers makes no sense at all.

ESPN app will be on DTV within a month, most likely....guess why?   Contracts are up.

It looks like you can get it for TWC.

Why don't contracts contain language allowing new items to be added as an Addendum without ripping up the original contract? That's how we handle contracts with our service providers.

Really?  I always thought the reason DTV couldn't get its stuff straight was because its employees spend way too much time on the internet.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

This. It's really tough to get something hammered out mid-contract. It is considerably easier to do when a contract is up and you can make a clean change to the contract language.  Also, leverage of the negotiating parties is a lot different then as well.

For the uninformed and old, what does "does not authenticate" mean?

In layman's terms: it won't work.

My guess, authenticate = confirm you are a paying subscriber?

For the uninformed and old, what does "does not authenticate" mean?

The real meaning is there is no contract in place between the two parties that is granting the rights of those streams to the customers of those distributors.  Trust me, those distributors want the rights, but typically the content providers hold them ransom to get those rights.  What almost always happens, you have to wait until the next contract roles around and they are included at that point.  With costs already totally out of control, the distributors are in no mood to add to them, and that's part of the vicious cycle.

In tech terms, authentication is an industry term in TV Land where if you subscribe to a pay tv service and they have an agreement with said content provider, then both parties "authenticate" to validate you truly are a customer through a digital token or some other identifier that tells the content provider you actually are a paid subscriber to Dish, or Directv, or Fios, etc.  Once that confirmed technical handshake occurs, the stream is "authenticated" and available to view.   It's done at an AuthN and AuthZ level which is frequently done to insure the customer is truly an active paid tv subscriber.

Hope that makes sense.
